Introduccin
n este libro se incluyen dos Mosaicos. En el primero hemos seleccionado una serie de artculos sobre nuestra msica popular, particularmente el tango y el folklore. En el segundo, los textos refieren a diversas personalidades de nuestro pas que se han destacado en el mbito poltico, cientfico, artstico, etc. Por ltimo, se propone la lectura de una fbula. Con cada uno de los artculos tambin continuar aprendiendo vocabulario nuevo y aspectos de la lengua inglesa que le permitirn profundizar en la comprensin de los textos. Al final del libro encontrar el glosario y las claves de correccin para facilitar su trabajo.

En este Mosaico adems de leer artculos sobre la msica en la Argentina aprender a ordenar eventos cronolgicamente a partir de la lectura de un texto y a reconocer y expresar el tiempo futuro. Tambin se propone el repaso de sufijos que indican oficio o profesin y de conectores.

f any one thing could be 40 described as quintessentially Argentine today, it would undoubtedly be tango, be it a music, dance or song. In recent years tango has once 45 again moved back into the front line and is currently enjoying a particulary good state of health in Buenos Aires, the city where it was 50 born, and around the world where it is performed, practiced and promoted by thousands of amateur and/or professional tangophiles with 55 no contact at all with Argentina other than a profound liking for this unique cultural phenomenon. Over the years the Herald has written hundred of articles 60 on the different aspects of tango in all its forms and continues doing so to this day reviewing shows, interviewing its protagonists, analyzing its 65 musical forms and lyrics, pulling the veils off its secret codes, language and myths. In doing so it has been possible to monitor the changing 70 fate of tango locally and internationally, recording to the best of our ability the fluctuations of a general public who at times was 75 uncertain as to what to make of the newer trends within this musical form.

Texto 3: The Origins of Tango

The Origins of Tango


he origins of the tango were as international as the city that had created it. Born at the turn of the century in the working-class barrios of Buenos Aires, with their mix of immigrants and Argentines, its music fused the 5 milonga of the pampas with the habanera of Cuba, and combined the Spanish guitar with the Italian violin and the German accordion known as the bandoneon. Its lyrics interspersed lunfardo, the Italian slang of La Boca with Argentine Spanish. Its greatest singer was born in France. Its sinuous 10 and intricate dance, with its unashamed sexuality, owed much to the traditions of the city's blacks and mulattos. By 1910, the tango had become a fixture both in the bars of La Boca and in the dance halls of the city center where young men of all classes went for excitement and 15 entertainment. Argentina's elite considered the tango - that "reptile from the brothel "- lower class and disreputable until it took Paris by storm in the years before World War I. Argentine tango bands alternated with American jazz bands in the club and dance halls of Montmartre. Although Europeans ignored the urban character of the tango and insisted on 20 seeing in it "the melancholy of the Pampas" they embraced Argentina's contribution the global popular culture with unfeigned enthusiasm. "Tangomania" had swept over Europe by 1913. Paris was renamed "Tangoville" by one wit, and" tango teas" and "tango dinners" were all the rage. The pope condemned the tango as immoral, and the emperor of Germany forbade his soldiers to dance it in uniform, but this 25 only seemed to add to its attraction. The musical hybrid that have been born in the barrios an brothel of Buenos Aires had became the world's first Latin dance craze. The tango survived World War I, and in the return to normalcy that followed, the whole world seemed to glide across the floor to the sensuous rhythms of Buenos Aires, from Rudolph Valentino on the silent screen to lovers in dance halls from New York to Tokyo. In 30 Argentina itself, even the oligarchy now succumbed to its seductions, led by the aristocratic president , Marcelo T. Alvear. The compadrito, the slick but aristocratic sentimental barrio tough with his tight-fitting suit and ready knife , his blend of mestizo macho and Italian lover, took his place next to the gaucho as an Argentine archetype. By the 1920s the tango had become equated with the quintessentially Argentine, and a divided nation had found its 35 cultural synthesis, the musical key to its elusive national identity. By then, the tango had also acquired its characteristic voice, the legendary Carlos Gardel, whose expressive baritone and evocative lyrics defined the tango for all time. With his pomaded hair, trademark smile, and eternal cigarette, Gardel incarnated the urban ideal of a self-confident Argentina. He was also its first pop idol, Argentina's gift to this century's popular music, who was applauded in Madrid and Montevideo, New York and Paris. 1

Este artculo cuenta una breve historia del tango que aparece en un libro de texto para la escuela secundaria en los Estados Unidos. El libro se llama Amricas e incluye un esbozo de la historia de Amrica Latina y el Caribe. En el comienzo del prrafo cinco, en la lnea 35, encontrar la frase By then, que tambin indica una fecha. La traduccin de then es entonces, es decir, para entonces. A qu fecha se refiere? Cul es la ltima fecha que menciona el autor?

By Ines Pardal For the Herald Cien tangos fundamentales, 30 by Oscar del Priore and Irene Amuchstegui Prologue by Horacio Ferrer. Published by Aguilar, Buenos Aires . 35 1 his book is a real treat for ta ngo love rs. Written by two genuine experts in the subject (both 5 of them members of the Academia Nacional del Tango), their loving job has been to select 100 key scores of history- making 10 tangos- also making room for a bunch of songs (El da que me quieras and Lejana tierra ma, so closely associated with 15 Gardel that they could not be overlooked), waltzes and milongas (with the celebrated Taquito militar closing the volume). A 20 wide range of tangos extend through time from El entrerriano (the oldest one record, 1896-97) through El Choclo and La 25 Morocha at the turn of the century, to peaks like Caminito or Cambalache. As could be expected, the list closes with the likes of Piazzolla's Adis Nonino (lyrics by Eladia Blzquez) and Balada para un loco (lyrics by Horacio Ferrer). "A selection always involves a tough job," say Del Priore and Amuchstegui in their foreword; so they decided to cover the 100 slots available for this book with those scores counting the highest number of versions. Perhaps other specialists would have made a somewhat different choice, but this selection is sure to satisfy most tango fans. Each entry includes the tango words with a photo of the score or alb u m , an d rel i ab l e comments by the book authors on their history, composers, and often legends or anecdotes from the period. Special mention should be made, by way of curiosity, of tangos being censored in the period 1943-49 (something started with the "enlightened"

The performance was broadcast nationwide. The Do shared the stage with the very young, up-and-coming folklore singer Tamara Castro. "We wouldnt really have chosen her if we had been given the chanceand she wouldnt have chosen us, but it is a good thing that audiences get mixed up," Paz reflected. He was referring to the Argentine folklore's two welldefined trends: Tamara Castro is in the same league as Soledad, Los Alonsitos and Los Nocheros, while Do Coplanacu stands closer to Ral Carnota, Mercedes Sosa, Santaires or Laura Albarracn. The duo is made up Julio Paz on bombo and quena and Roberto Cantos on guitar and vocals, plus the permanent accompaniment of violinist

Julio Paz and Roberto Cantos, from Do Coplanacu Andrea Leguizamn. Their second CD, Paisaje, has just been released. The album, an example of quality and good taste, includes songs both by Paz-Cantos and by other composers, carefully avoiding the folklore's commonplaces. The duo's voices are smooth and in tune, far from the screaming voices which seem to be the fad these days. As guest musicians, Paisaje features pianist Marcelo Perea, flutist Gerardo Sc h i av o n , p ercu s s i o n i s t Esteban Gutirrez, singer Raly Barrionuevo and Bicho Daz on vocals and charango. As was the case over the last few years, Coplanacu will have their own pea in 55 Cosqun (province of Crdoba) during January. Many good artists not able to perform at the Cosqun Festival's big stage will surely be found 60 there (according to new regulations, musicians cannot play at the festival and at the surrounding peas in a given year). Do Coplanacu is, 65 undoubtedly, a very good option within Argentine folklore - a sample of what can be achieved through hard 70 work and musical knowledge. Folklore at its best


By Pablo Wittner For the Herald 1 ifteen years ago, the trio formed by Ral Carnota, together with pianist Eduardo Spinassi and and percussionist Rodolfo Snchez, provoked a revolution in Argentine folklore, introducing a very peculiar instrument lineup and a way of keeping time which was intrinsically different from the one that prevailed at the moment On Thursday last week, Carnota presented Recicln (Acqua Records), his latest CD. It was recorded with his new trio, featuring young bassist Willy Gonzlez and, once more, Rodolfo Snchez. This is Carnota's first album since 1993 (earlier this year, Epsa Music released Entre la ciudad y el campo), and was recorded live through a series of the gigs Carnota gave at El Club del Vino last June. Other versions of most of the songs in Recicln had already appeared in previous works, though some new material was also included: La asimtrica, La rosa perenne and Mishky 3063. The show consisted mainly of a friends' meeting, both on stage and amid the audience. Suna Rocha and Liliana Herrero, among other renowned musicians, could be seen sitting at the tables.

Willy Gonzlez, Ral Carnota and Rodolfo Snchez. Accompanying Carnota were Spinassi, Lito Vitale, Popi Spatocco, Facundo Guevara, Lilian Saba, Marcelo Chiodi and Mercedes Sosa, who offered a flawless version of Desandando. Once again, Carnota, a folklorist who hails from Mar del Plata, showed why he's regarded as an eminence in the genre. With his trademark voice, which reminds one of a slightly worn-out cart that still knows how to move, Carnota delighted the audience with all the tracks from Recicln plus some more songs, such as a powerful rendering of La bolivianita (with his former trio) and Contrafuego -that excellent sample of Carnota's musical worldperformed along with those who recorded it five years ago: pianist Lilian Saba and flutist Marcelo Chiodi. He kept two of his old hits for the encores: Pa'l amigo and 70 Pecado de Juventud. It is true that the exchange of Gonzlez for Spinassi took some strength away from the trio. The new bassist, 75 nevertheless, is adequate in his part, even when it is never a simple task to follow Ral Carnota's syncopated rhythm. Snchez, on the other hand, 80 sounds more at ease, displaying his extensive drum beating expertise. Coming out of the show at La Trastienda, a boy of about 85 20 commented: "I thought I was the only young person who liked Carnota." He was glad to discover many more like him, which means there is 90 some hope for a kind of folklore that, lately, seems to be so devalued and clichd.

Cuando se citan las palabras exactas que pronunci una persona se ponen comillas al comienzo y al final de la cita. Se agrega, en muchos casos, la frase "dijo el Papa"; para este verbo "decir" existen dos palabras diferentes en ingls: said y told que son el pasado de say y tell. Ambos verbos tienen el mismo significado: decir, pero cambia el uso en la oracin. Se dice say cuando se menciona a la persona que lo dijo. Se utiliza tell cuando se incluye quin lo dijo y a quin se lo dijo. As se estructura la oracin en ingls con los verbos say y tell. Por ahora slo necesita recordar que say y tell significan decir; con ello podr reconocer el sentido. Cuando decida hablar o escribir en ingls es importante recordar la regla.

This seems a good idea, for interviews out of context may sometimes convey a false impression. To take just one example, priest Julio Meinvielle (interviewed in 1940 by A. Larrn de Vere) sounds 35 like a kindly, good humoured man rescuing teenagers from the streets around his football teams in the Ateneo Popular. For those who do 40 not know much about him, the editors' introduction is there, to learn that he was one of the most nefarious exponents of rightwing 45 Catholic nationalism in this country, spiritual advisor of the notorius Tacuara antisemitic grouping, a fellow for whom not only 50 Jews but also Protestants and Masons, liberals and socialists were the forces of evil he fought in his 55 crusade. H e i s t r u l y representative of Argentina's darkest side. The book opens with an interview to General (later 60 President ) Julio A. Roca, in his time an exponent of "progress" and development. His wife Eva is featured in a 160 1944 Radiolandia interview in which the "promising starlet" says she expects so much from the future that her "acting career may slip 165 into the background." Pern himself is interviewed in Madrid, 1966, asserting he has "found proof of the decay of democratic 170 liberalism and its close links with communism" and wishing to replace them with something h a v i n g a " C h r i s t i a n , 175 humanistic, national content." Two ideologues of left-wing Peronism like John William Cooke and Rodolfo Walsh (the latter, 180 kidnapped and killed during the Proceso dictators hip) wanted to instill Cuban revolutionary fervor into a movement which 185 under Pern had been associated with national socialism with disastrous results. One is still expecting some self criticism from

former Montonero leaders (as poet Juan Gelman has honestly attempted). In an interview by a young Horacio Verbitsky, writer Beatriz Guido (famous for her stories behind Leopoldo Torre Nilsson's films) sounds snobbish, vain and flippant but at the same time wise enough to point that she could see no connection between Pern and "Che" Guevara. Nor could Julio Cortzar, one of the greatest Argentine writers of all times, then enthusing about Chile's UP. And now that with the end of the Cold War ideological confrotation is not so harsh, Cortzar emerges as one of the most honest voices as well as that of another great one on the opposite side of the political spectrum, Jorge Luis Borges, never one to mince or care about "political correctness." Those two, at least, we Argentines can be truly proud of. That they admired each other gives futher evidence of their noble spirits.
