Outraged

http://blogs.ocweekly.com/navelgazing/2011/10/occupy_orange_county_wall_street_protest_irvine.php quoted from the OC Weekly: "The goal of the protests according to the call's moderator, D'Marie Mulatierri of Irvine, was for people in the land of citrus to stand in solidarity with New York activists operating under the banner of Occupy Wall Street. A recording of the 93-minute conference call in its entirety is temporarily available online here through October 8. " Without the consent of folk in the call? What the hell is that? also: ""We need to figure out what's going to be allowed and not allowed," Mulatierri told callers. "This is a peaceful movement and we want to abide by the law as much as we can. I'd like to get through this without anybody getting arrested."" When was this agreed upon? I'm tired of this shit with people calling shots when they aren't entitled to. This is supposed to be a movement for the people. You have no right to "moderate" or call the shots D'Marie. Outraged. Ya'll need to check yourself before you destroy this movement. I don't have much faith in this at all anymore.

Someone needs to take charge, at least as first, if only to coordinate. I think this will start to work once physical people start showing up at physical locations - at that point it becomes a "real thing," an entity people will either follow or not. Part of the problem, btw, is that there's no obvious central "downtown OC" - all the major northern cities think they're it, but we know there's no consensus about it. I do think it has to be a power center, though - I think Downtown Disney is a bad idea for example, despite Disney's corporate power, since the occupy movement seems to be about attacking FINANCIAL corporate power in particular, media power not as much.

But that's not true. the movement isn't about one thing. It's about many things, and that's why it's catching on so quickly. Sitting-in near Wall Street made sense in NYC because everything in lower Manhattan is within walking distance of everything else. But none of the other Occupy campaigns are taking such a literal approach to opposing corporate greed; most of them are sitting-in outside government buildings. And that's because most people with actual experience in this sort of thing understand that the only vaguely legitimate means we have to

people with actual experience in this sort of thing understand that the only vaguely legitimate means we have to intervene is through the government. No matter how much we put ourselves in the faces of corporations, they don't have any reason to listen. Does anybody really think they didn't know they were robbing us blind?

But we should have all decided that together. There are particular banks which have devastated certain segments of OC. There are bank offices and maybe even defense contractors which use banks for colonial genocide, which we should investigate. Their are other options, other voices.... The other Occupations didn't have their first General Assy until after the OCCUPATION STARTED. But the organizers, and the usual online activists (myself included) were the ones to get the invite. Maybe we can start all over again??

that's actually a good point - the Occupy movement, if its going to be successful, has to make government move. Banks won't do it unless something else makes it, and government would be a good tool to do it. Anything that happens in Santa Ana, btw, should focus on the federal government, no? In any event, the square in Civic Center's a good spot - close to the state and federal courts, City Hall, and state buildings. I know the IRS is across the street from Superior Court on Civic Center Drive.

she did state multiple times the call was being recorded, expect anything you say or do online or on the phone to be recorded and published. I am in complete agreeance however that Irvine is a bad choice locationwise.I'm for moving it to SA.

I vote for Santa Ana...We have to get a permit for a park, now.

Cameron, she stated that the call was recorded multiple times. She is doing a great thing by going out of her way to organize the initial movement, you could show some patience instead of immediately getting outraged. Look no one really has "a right" to call the shots here, but nothing would get done if people like her didn't take it upon themselves to get us all together now.

Dylan, Again we appreciate the work D'Marie has done, but you're wrong. There are people who were already planning to have it, assumed they were going to have it, wanted to have it in Santa Ana, and would have VOTED that way. It's NOT personal. This is about us ALL doing the work. We should have voted on it - ALL of us...Now we can! We have no Leaders - we are all doing the best we can. Does the undocumented person who comes out to protest riskng arrest sow more courage? Perhaps? It's all relative. And unfortunately, we'll never know how great we could have worked TOGETHER. Well, maybe it's still possible. But we must abide by OWS consensus pattern.

I agree with and support your mentality, Sharon. However, I would also point out that the "OWS spirit" evolved after a few people decided on a place to start it--at Zucotti park or whatever the new name is. As for us, now there are, what, 20 or 30 people who want to help organize? We're right to be frustrated that 5 people voted on the first "OC-wide" location. But i think threatening to walk away and break off is as equally disastrous as telling some people they don't get to be heard. i think we can still make this work better, together. It's not like Orange County is going to have the numbers LA, SF or NY do. Strength in numbers is extra important for us.

As someone in media/promotions, I can tell y'all that is it more important to decide a location and stick to it rather than going around and around and not making any decision at all. WHO CARES WHERE IT IS IN THE END??? The point is - We GOT a location. We are sticking to it and making things happen. And I think the financial district is perfect in any case. It show solidarity with our main cause -- Occupy Wall Street -- and it brings to light the perpetrators who sit behind their desks in their glass buildings and make horrible decisions on our behalf. LET'S MARCH IN IRVINE!! WOOT!!

I don't think "expose Wall Street greed" is a goal. If that reality needed exposure, there wouldn't be thousands of people across the country organizing like this. Maybe it's less obvious in Orange County, but that's all the more reason to organize in a place where our cries won't fall on deaf ears and where we'll be visible to those who would support us. Showing "solidarity with our main cause -- Occupy Wall Street" is a rhetorically empty statement. What's their cause? Have you read the official OWS statement of grievances? I can dig it up and post it if you haven't. It's about a lot more than just "Wall Street Greed." it's about government corruption, it's about colonialism here and abroad, it's about racial equality--to name only a few of the many grievances that has brought together so many diverse people in NY. and it really does matter where we assemble if the Irvine police are likely to arrest us illegally. We don't have the numbers of a big city.

Hi Nicholas, that's why it's important for us all to come together. Who is at the meetings will determine what the issues are. BTW, I think the Irvine police are the coolest re: protest. did you hear how the LA City Council may pass a SPECIAL resolution to allow the Occupy LA peeps to stay on the grass? The Police Chief said that the OLA Police Liaison contingent presented their case is an impressive way, weren't angry, and that most if not all agree that we need a place to assemble to express the grave concerns we have, and this is the only way we can get it to listen! They haven't had any incidents. We have to present it to the PD and the City as something embedded w/i our Constitution - our right to protest. (side note: Obama finally acknowledge OWS last night during a press conference! Per his press secretary!)

I agree with "LET'S MARCH IN IRVINE!!" but think we still have time to decide which city the main occupation should be in. Wherever people will end up camping, there will be opportunities for support rallies in other cities of interest.

Sheryl, We care because again people of color are not included in way that is practical. We should be reaching out to all people THEN get a consensus. Five people can't make the decision! Again, I want it in Santa Ana, and it IS important to me. Santa Ana is a city facing gentrification paid for by these banks. Many people there have lost their homes. Plus the young people want it there...in the end.. they are the engine... This isn't some nice packaged presentation. It's democracy and it's messy.

Sheryl, apparently all of us on this mesage board care where the location is.There really has not been a whole lot of press on the event... 2 OC weekly Articles, im pretty sure if we change the locale it will be fairly easy to get the new location out there to everyone involved.

Regarding reasons for this effort (as was so well covered by Nicholas) I'd like to add this: Getting $ out of politics. Every politician is bought by corporations via Super Pacs. This is mostly why labor unions are under attack. So, while this is about the abuse of banks we can add campaign finance reform to the list. And the day the movement started in NYC that was one of the first things mentioned. I vote for Santa Ana. Another major advantage is that it is much more likely the locals would easily join. It is a nice mix of civic, residential and business. It is also central to the county, geographically. Diane

I had intended that as one example of "government corruption", although i think we could make it even broader by saying "reinvigorating democracy." there are issues beyond campaign finance. even as more people are going to college, the value of public education is dying--it's not suppose to be state-funded job training! it's supposed to be about helping people to be rational and well-informed (something we need for democracy to work). along that note i think the danger of having nothing but corporate-run journalism is becoming obvious, with so much blatant spin and misinformation coming out of these businesses, and not even just Fox. where Fox leads, CNN follows, leaving MSNBC and (this is really sad) Comedy Central to try and clean up, with only a little success. but again, i think that's why we need to get the first GA meeting set down so that we can vote on a more long-term meeting place and begin to exchange ideas and host teach-ins as they're doing in NYC.

Hi Nicholas,

6:00 PM Yesterday

Most of the media we watch listen to and read is own by a handful of big corporations. http://www.takebackthemedia.com/owners.html In some instances, like NBC, there's a conflict of interest as GE owns NBC and the huge war profiteer, Raytheon. They are making money off the wars...

you're preaching to the choir, Sharon. this is all stuff i studied years ago in college, when i was apparently supposed to be getting a business-oriented degree that would have been equally useless (because, you know, picking the right major magically creates more jobs... /sarcasm).

I feel this movement should be inclusive above all. Some vote for Irvine for its financial district and 'Wall Street" similarity but it seems to me the majority of this movement wishes to have this occupation in Santa Ana for a number of reasons. Santa Ana is more inclusive to people of color, queer and trans folk alike. The majority of our support will be coming from surrounding cities like Santa Ana who are outraged at the corrupt system and wish to be heard. Not many people of color will feel that this movement will be inclusive and welcoming to them if this is held in Irvine. Compromises must be made at times to go through with imperative matters as with this one. Again, like Cameron stated, check your privilege. Not all people have a mode of transportation to occupy and go back to work or school as needed. I myself have volunteered to offer first aid and CPR attention when needed but I also have classes that I can not miss. I also do not have a reliable method of transportation to get from Irvine to Santa Ana College and back. I am a queer person of color who understands the alienation people will feel if this movement keeps ignoring the request of the majority. I am the 99% and I do not, can not be ignored by my community.

Occupy Orange County (D'Marie)

Organizer

3:01 AM Today

The last time I checked my calendar October, 15th is not the same date as October 22nd. In fact there are 7 days between them. The decision has been made and it will not be changed. Occupy Orange County is going to take place on October 15th in Irvine's Financial District, which is considered the Financial District of Orange County. We will occupy Irvine for 7 days. During those seven days we will have a General Assembly of everyone there to get a majority consensus to move the Occupation on October 22nd to Santa Ana. It would behoove those who want to have OOC in Santa Ana to be in Irvine and be part of the General Assembly. Once it is approved by the General Assembly, then on day 8 of the occupation, which is October 22nd (the date that the facilitator-Aaron had chosen) everyone will move to Santa Ana and stay there until the occupation ends. Prior to October 15th we will be having day marches in various cities around the OC on different days so we can pick up momentum, while spreading the word about the OOC. Next Tues we will be in Fullerton...so those of you that want to get out and picket early, come and join us in Fullerton. Next Wednesday we will be in Irvine (not the financial district), Orange will be joining the mini day protests and hopefully a location in South Orange County. All these mini protests funnel into Irvine and then if GA, approved funneled into Santa Ana!!! Lots of opportunities for people in Orange County to participate!!! This is the plan. Stay tuned to the Facebook page for Events and details. www.facebook.com/OccupyOrangeCountyCA

I don't want to see this fall apart. I'll be in Irvine on the 15th. I'll be at the general assembly. We can do this. Let's try not to cast aspersions and be divisive. Come to Irvine everybody. Come to the GA. I trust everyone will have a chance to express themselves. Come to Santa Ana on the 22nd. in solidarity, in peace
