Nitrogen constituting 78.08% by volume of Earth's atmosphere.

[1] The
element nitrogen was discovered as a separable component of air, by Scottish physician Daniel Rutherford, in 1772.(propellants and explosives), and cyanides, contain nitrogen. The extremely strong bond in elemental nitrogen dominates nitrogen chemistry, causing difficulty for both organisms and industry in breaking the bond to convert the N2 into useful compounds, but at the same time causing release of large amounts of often useful energy when the compounds burn, explode, or decay back into nitrogen gas. Nitrogen in tires is becoming a popular replacement for standard air.When it comes to tire inflation, nitrogen has many advantages over oxygen. With nitrogen tire inflation, improvements can be noted in a vehicle's handling, fuel efficiency and tire life through better tire pressure retention, improved fuel economy and cooler running tire temperatures.

Oxygen Uses of oxygen include the production of steel, plastics and textiles;
rocket propellant; oxygen therapy; and life support in aircraft, submarines, spaceflight and diving.(H2O) is the most familiar oxygen compound.Acetone is an important feeder material in the chemical industry.

Carbon Dioxide Leavening agents produce carbon dioxide to cause dough

to rise. Baker's yeast produces carbon dioxide by fermentation of sugars within the dough, while chemical leaveners such as baking powder and baking soda release carbon dioxide when heated or if exposed to acids.Carbon dioxide extinguishes flames, and some fire extinguishers, especially those designed for electrical fires, contain liquid carbon dioxide under pressure.

Helium The largest single use of liquid helium is to cool the

superconducting magnets in modern MRI scanners.Because of its low density and incombustibility, helium is the gas of choice to fill airships such as the Goodyear blimp.

Hydrogen Large quantities of H2 are needed in the petroleum and chemical

industries.

Argon Gloveboxes are often filled with argon, which recirculates over
scrubbers to maintain an oxygen- and moisture-free atmosphere.Light bulbs.

Krypton These are mostly used for photography. Dimethyl Sulfide is used to prevent the coke deposits which acts as a
thermal insulator in the tube as it accumulates in pyrolysis furnaces. It is also used in steel mill furnaces to control dusting. Dimethyl Sulfide is included as a component of dangerous gases to detect the leaks by smell.

Methane Although it is primarily used as a fuel, some people have

attempted to use it as a gas for lifting balloons.
