Contrary to popular belief, you
do actually have to have a license
to practice law in New Jersey.
Its crazy, but thats bureaucra-
cy for you.
A Medford resident was indict-
ed earlier this month for practic-
ing law without a license, accord-
ing to the Burlington County
Prosecutors Office. The suspect
represented a client in Evesham
Township Municipal Court earli-
er this year without a license.
Demetrio S. Timban, 45, of
Medford, was indicted on two
counts of unauthorized practice
of law in the fourth degree, ac-
cording to Burlington County
Prosecutor Robert D. Bernardi.
The indictment was returned
on Oct. 4. An arraignment will be
scheduled soon in Superior Court
in Burlington County.
Evesham Township police took
Timban into custody at his home
on Sept. 14.
He was released after posting
10 percent of the $5,000 bail that
was set by the Hon. Jeanne T.
Covert.
The investigation revealed that
Timban is an attorney and is li-
censed to practice law in Michi-
gan and New York, but not in
New Jersey. His unlicensed sta-
tus in New Jersey was discovered
after Timban represented an in-
dividual in Evesham Township
Municipal Court.
Timban was paid $500 by his
client for his representation.
Timban represented his client on
two occasions earlier this year,
once in March and once in May.
Timban had given the client a
business card that listed himself
as an attorney for The Timban
Law Group in Cherry Hill and in-
dicated he was Specializing in
Bankruptcy & Creditors Rights;
Immigration & Nationality Law;
Family Law; Alternative Dispute
Resolution and Real Estate Law.
The Burlington County Prose-
cutors Office Financial Crimes
Unit and the Evesham Township
Police Department conducted the
joint investigation.
According to the prosecutors
office, an indictment is merely an
accusation.
The defendant is presumed in-
nocent unless or until proven
guilty.

Do you have a cell phone or a
smart phone of some kind? In-
stead of downloading the latest
version of Angry Birds, perhaps
youd like to check out a new fea-
ture that could better serve the
Evesham Township community
and make it a safer place to live.
The Evesham Police Depart-
ment launched a national tip411
anonymous text program,
which will add a new dimension
of eyes and ears on the streets of
Evesham to help create a safer
community.
Tip411 is an Internet-based
tool that enables the public to
text message anonymous tips to
police, and lets the police re-
spond back creating a two-way
anonymous chat.
Reserved exclusively for pub-
lic safety purposes and powered
by CitizenObserver, a St. Paul,
Minn., company, tip411 puts a
powerful new crime-fighting
tool into the hands of the town-
ship community for all ages and
demographics, department rep-
resentative Walt Miller said.
Were proud to be part of a
national program that benefits
over 1,000 communities around
the county, Miller said. This
new capability will help our citi-
zens play an active role in keep-
ing neighborhoods safer, it will
engage a younger demographic
in the process, and it will save
our agency time and resources.
Anyone with a cell phone can
now send an anonymous tip to
Evesham Police Department by
texting the word ETPDTIP and
the tip information to 847411
(tip411).
Anonymous Web tips can also
be submitted right from the Po-
lice Departments website at
www.eveshampd.org. On the left
side of the home page is a citi-
zen tip tab, which will direct In-
ternet users to the tip411 site.

Users can also access the
Tip441 site via the Evesham Po-
lice Departments Facebook fan
page. On the upper left side of
the Evesham Police Depart-
ments Fan page there is a Sub-
mit A Tip tab under the Eve-
sham Police profile image/Eve-
sham Police logo.
All of these options are com-
pletely anonymous for the citi-
zen submitting the crime or
safety tip. CitizenObservers
technology removes all identify-
ing information before the po-
lice department sees the tip, so
theres no way to identify the
sender.
Police Chief Michael Barth
said this will be a welcome addi-
tion to crime prevention in Eve-
sham Township.
When someone feels afraid
to come forward, or simply feels
like they dont want to get in-
volved, this can be a great way
to pass information on without
fear of retribution, Barth said.

6 THE MARLTON SUN OCTOBER 19-25, 2011
T
he only thing missing, well, al-
most the only thing, was Jim
Gray.
Last week, Gov. Christie took to a
podium to say that, really, no kidding,
hes serious, honestly, hes not running
for the Republican nomination for
president next year. Despite repeated
denials that he was interested in being
president, the governor reportedly
had been lobbied, cajoled and other-
wise encouraged to toss his hat into
the ring.
So, we had The Decision. Part II.
Minus commercial interruptions.
Christie, once again, said he is out in
2012.
Now, that doesnt mean hes out for-
ever. In fact, wed place a few dollars
that, in 2016, Chris Christie carries the
GOPs banner in the presidential elec-
tion.
There were too many reasons to not
run this time around. Christie would
be jumping in late in the race, with lit-
tle time to organize a campaign.
Hes not the most popular guy with
some of the most conservative ele-
ments of the party, either. And those
elements have a loud voice. Maybe not
so much in 2016. Christie brings a
blunt, up-front, pull-no-punches ap-
proach to politics. Love it or hate it, its
unique these days. That approach
often resonates with individuals who
arent heavily involved in party poli-
tics more so than party hard-liners.
And, even if he were to get the nom-
ination, and despite President
Obamas dropping poll numbers, its
always tough to unseat an incum-
bent as, were guessing, the Republi-
cans might find out next year.
Christie has a good shot at, some
day, being president. But not right
now.
His decision to wait four years is a
wise one.
Christie in 2016?
Sitting out 2012 presidential race a smart move for the governor
Christies future
Do you think hell be president one
day? Do you think he will be re-elect-
ed governor?
The effects of bullying
are long lasting
There is a t-shirt slogan thanking people
for being rungs on someone elses ladder of
success. It is an amusing, adult depiction of
the serious childhood problem of bullying.
My hometown recently printed its helpful
hints regarding bullying.
The buzzwords of understand, commu-
nicate, encourage, and take a stand con-
vince me the tips are aimed at the victim or
target, not source. Perpetrator is probably
a good word, for bullies will persist on the
attack for as long as they enjoy an audience
or ego-boost by making someone else mis-
erable. Anything is ammunition, from a
passion or participation to something
gleaned from a curriculum lesson. Band?
Wuss, thats not a sport! I would have been
happier not hearing a foreign word for ex-
crement fertilizer, repeatedly.
I was bullied in middle grades a long
time ago, but its still painful to recall. I
was orally harassed, looted by locker
mates, lucky enough to avoid being tripped
on a staircase, and assaulted by the offend-
ing trio at the bottom. The people who were
reprimanded for the transgressions were
unrepentant afterward, complaining that
their fun day, weekend and life, had been
ruined. One parent excused their childs
abhorrence, as kids will be kids. Their
kid was causing suicidal thoughts in some-
one elses.
Theres one unavoidable approach that
needs to be taken to combat bullying. The
offender needs to be told unequivocally to
knock their crap off.
This requires a brave peer or adult to
step forward and speak up, as the targets
are often picked on for lack of defensive
friends or tendencies. Bullies are often dia-
bolically discreet, so as not to have their
rushes of superior feelings curtailed.
They can now hide in cynical silence be-
hind text and email assaults. Parents need
to teach their kids simple civilities, includ-
ing being told no and stop that. Bol-
stering ego should not come at the expense
of debasing someone elses self-esteem or
well being.
I have encountered adults in positions of
education or authority, whose self-worth
seemed dependent on making other people
feel worthless. Were they the mean girls
and SOBs in their grade school? One won-
ders.

Elections letter policy
To be fair to candidates and voters in the
upcoming Nov. 8 election, heres how let-
ters to the editor regarding the election will
be handled for the next few weeks.
The Sun will publish letters regarding the
election in print editions through Oct. 26.
After that, election letters will be published
online only.
Were doing this to prevent last-minute
attacks and accusations that leave no time
for responses or rebuttals in print. The
online format allows for ongoing commen-
tary and debate.
We recognize this isnt a perfect system.
For example, responses to letters in the
Oct. 26 print edition will appear online only,
not in print. But, we think this is a reason-
able policy that allows the community to
debate important issues, while keeping
things as fair as possible for everyone.
Please keep in mind that the usual rules
apply to election letters: Anonymous letters
will not be published, all letters are subject
to editing, avoid letters that are in poor
taste or libelous, etc.
Also keep in mind that, to be considered for
a print edition, we should have your letter
in hand no later than the Thursday prior to
publication. For example, if you want your
letter to appear in the Oct. 26 edition, we
should receive it no later than Oct. 20. We
anticipate a large number of letters this
campaign season, so dont delay. We will
attempt to publish as many letters as possi-
ble.
If we receive more election letters than we
can publish due to limited space in our
papers, the letters we publish will reflect
the ratio of letters received. For example, if
we receive 30 letters supporting Candidate
A, and 10 letters supporting Candidate B,
we will publish three letters for Candidate
A and one for Candidate B.
Please contact your local editor through
the email address in this paper with any
questions.

Eighty percent of people world-
wide suffering from a life-threat-
ening illness do not have access to
the dignity of basic medical com-
fort care and support, reports the
World Palliative Care Association
(WPCA). World Hospice and Pal-
liative Care Day, which was cele-
brated on Oct. 8, strives to raise
awareness of this great need.
Samaritan Healthcare & Hos-
pice in Marlton, in an effort to
make a positive difference, an-
nounced a recent partnership
with sister hospice Kawempe
Home Care, a community-based
organization in Kampala, Uganda
that provides comprehensive ho-
listic care to people living with
HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and can-
cer.
The Samaritan-Kawempe part-
nership is part of the FHSSA ini-
tiative in Sub-Saharan Africa.
FHSSA, a not-for-profit formerly
known as the Foundation for Hos-
pices in Sub-Saharan Africa, is a
member of the National Hospice
and Palliative Care Organization
(NHPCO). It was created to mobi-
lize U.S. hospice response to the
HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa.
Each year FHSSA and its Pro-

approximately a quarter of a mil-

fected by AIDS, cancer and other

life and our connectedness with
each other, those we care for, our
community and our world.
We are all members of a glob-
al village. Millions of patients
and family caregivers worldwide
need palliative care every year,
said Mary Ann Boccolini, Samar-
itan CEO/President. But few ac-
tually receive it or have access to
it. Being comfortable at the end of
life is a human right, yet there are
still millions of people, especially
in poor, under-developed coun-
tries who are dying in pain and
discomfort.
Samaritans partnership with
Kawempe Home Care, Boccolini
said, will provide mutually bene-
ficial opportunities for idea-shar-
ing, professional exchanges, tech-
nical assistance, educational de-
velopment, organizational sup-
port and the development of a
solid relationship between two or-
ganizations and their staffs.
Initial projects of the partner-
ship include planning for Samari-
tan physicians and clinical staff
to present educational programs
on topics such as palliative care,
pain and symptom management
and grief support for Kawempes
patients, families, staff and vol-
unteers.
Samaritans staff and volun-
teers have also undertaken a
fundraising initiative through the
sale of Beads for Education col-
orful jewelry created from recy-
cled paper by Ugandans served by
Kawempe Home Care. The pro-
ceeds from the beads, 100 percent
of which will be sent to
Kawempe, helps provide an in-
come for Ugandan families to
send their children to school de-
spite the hardships caused by the
HIV/AIDS pandemic.

coming involved in Samaritans
partnership project activities or

to replace hard-wired detectors.
This is actually a violation of the
fire code. However, battery detec-
tors can be used when as a tempo-
rary solution when a hardwired
detector is not working. Most
homes built prior to 1977 can use
battery-powered smoke detectors.
Please call us at 983-2750 if you
have any questions about the

tectors.
