Lesson Launch

by Katie Vensel

Lesson Overview
The lesson launch is the first day of the Developmental Psychology Unit. The class is a tenth grade science classroom. The class period takes about 50 minutes and there are about 24 or 25 students in the classroom.

Objectives
By the end of this lesson, the students will be able to: - summarize developmental psychology - discuss a theorist they would like to research a little bit before the lesson on that theorist

Standards
Students will read, write, listen, and speak for information and understanding. As listeners and readers, students will collect data, facts, and ideas; discover relationships, concepts, and generalizations; and use knowledge generated from oral, written, and electronically produced texts. As speakers and writers, they will use oral and written language to acquire, interpret, apply, and transmit information. Listening and reading to acquire information and understanding involves collecting data, facts, and ideas; discovering relationships, concepts, and generalizations; and using knowledge from oral, written, and electronic sources synthesize information from diverse sources and identify complexities and discrepancies in the information make distinctions about the relative value and significance of specific data, facts, and ideas Students will use mathematical analysis, scientific inquiry, and engineering design, as appropriate, to pose questions, seek answers, and develop solutions. The central purpose of scientific inquiry is to develop explanations of natural phenomena in a continuing, creative process hone ideas through reasoning, library research, and discussion with others, including experts

Instructional Activities

Anticipatory Set
Description of the Lesson Launch activity: ask the students what they think the definition of developmental psychology is Have the students watch three videos which depict four ways of viewing Jean Piagets theory. Explain to the students that this will allow the students to get some ideas on how to observe children and some of the ideas children may have. Tell students to create a chart with wrong on one side and right on the other along the top. On the side, have the students put video 1, video, 2, video 3, video 4. Essentially there should be 8 boxes. For each video, have the students tally every time they think what the child responds with is the wrong answer or the right answer. Discuss with the students how this is essentially what they will be doing later in the unit. Description of how objectives will be communicated to students: verbally Description of the relevance of the learning: Developmental psychology is a very interesting way to analyze the aging of individuals from infancy to adulthood.

Introduce New Information & New Concepts

On the board, prior to the students entering the classroom, the teacher should have each theorist listed on the board with some information about the theory the individual came up with. This will help the students start to get an understanding of what they will be learning. Prior to going over the theorists, the teacher will go over the general idea of developmental psychology, outlining important ideas on the board for the students to put in their notes.

Guided Practice
The students will be advised of the unit project they will be working on throughout the unit. In order for the students to get a feel for what they need to do, the teacher will discuss a hypothesis that they created and how they came up with this idea. As a class, the basics of creating a hypothesis will be discussed.

Assessments
Students will provide their own interpretation of developmental psychology. They will also tell the class which theorist they will be researching a little more for the next class.

Closure

The closure is the assessment because the students have to analyze the information they have been provided about developmental psychology in order create their own interpretation. Also, by having the students tell the class what theorist they want to research a little more, they are showing initiative to learn more based on what they have briefly learned.

The theorists that will be discussed in the unit are Piaget (Cognitive Development), Erikson (Psychosocial Development), Freud (Psychosexual Development), and Adler (Birth Order). For Piaget, on the board should be "Cognitive development is the focus of brain changes along the lines of information processing, conceptual resources, perceptual skill, language learning during childhood." For Erikson, on the board should be "Psychosocial development is the development of an individual from infancy to adulthood as they pass through stages where they must confronts challenges in their life before moving to the next stage." For Freud, on the board should be "Psychosexual development is when an individual passes through stages which help with maturing their personality/individuality." For Adler, on the board should be "It is suggested that birth order plays a major role in the development of an individuals personality." The definition of developmental psychology is a branch of psychology in which the transformation of an individual from infancy to adulthood is studied. The different aspects of developmental psychology are the changes in the brain, personality, confronting challenges in one's life, etc.
