BKF2432 Mass Transfer

ASSIGNMENT 1 1. Assuming air to be composed O2 and N2, with their partial pressures in the ratio of 0.21:0.79, what are their mass fractions?

2. a)

Water vapor is diffusing through a stagnant film of air at 30 C towards a cold surface at 6C, where it is condensed. Derive the appropriate expression of water vapor diffusion flux from equation below:

N A cD AB

dx A C A N A N B dz C

Make THREE reasonable assumptions for the derivation. b) Calculate the water vapor diffusion flux in (kgmol/m2.s) if the pressure is 1 atm. The water vapor pressure is 3 kPa which is 10 mm from the cold surface and the water vapor diffusion coefficient in the air is 0.26 cm2/s.

3.

Methane diffuses at steady state through a tube containing helium. At point 1 the partial pressure of methane is P A1 = 55 kPa and at point 2, 0.03 m apart P A2 = 15 kPa. The total pressure is 101.32 kPa, and the temperature is 298 K. At this pressure and temperature, the value of diffusivity is 6.75 x 10 5 m 2/s. Calculate the flux of CH 4 at steady state for equimolar counter diffusion. Calculate the partial pressure at a point 0.02 m apart from point 1.

a) b)

4.

Gas A is diffusing through gas B under steady state conditions with gas B is insoluble in one boundary. The total pressure is 1 bar and temperature of 300 K. At one end of the path, the mole fraction of component A is 70% and the other point 1 mm away is 20%. Under these conditions, DAB is 0.1 cm2/s. Calculate the flux of A in mol/m2.s Estimate the diffusivity of acetic acid in a dilute solution at 313 K using Wilke-Chang equation. The viscosity of acetone is 0.264 cp.

6. Calculate the rate of diffusion of butanol (C 4 H 9 OH) in kgmol/m2.s at 20C under unidirectional steady state conditions through a 0.1 cm thick film of water when the concentrations of butanol at the opposite sides of the film are, respectively 10% and 4% butanol by weight. The diffusivity of butanol in water solution is 5.9 x 10 6 cm 2 /sec. The densities of 10% and 4% butanol solutions at 20C may be taken as 0.971 and 0.992 g/cm3 respectively.

7.

Hydrogen gas is maintained at 3 bars and 1 bar on opposite sides of plastic membrane which is 0.3 mm thick. The temperature is 25C, and the binary diffusion coefficient of hydrogen in the plastic is 8.7 x 10-8 m2/s. The solubility of hydrogen in the membrane is 1.5 x 10-3 kmol/m3.bar. What is the mass diffusion flux of hydrogen through the membrane in kg/s.m2?

8.

In the reformer of fuel cell, methane is converted to hydrogen gas, which then routed through a nickel tube for subsequent use in the generation of electricity. The tube has inner and outer diameter of 25 mm and 28 mm, respectively, and its outer surface is exposed to atmospheric air. If hydrogen flowing through the tube is at a pressure of 400 kPa, what is the mass rate of hydrogen loss through the tube per unit tube length in kg/m.s? DAB for the H2-nickel is 10-12 m2/s.
