Materials for Lesson: Elements of Literature, 3rd Course, Computers with internet access, computer projector, handouts, short story elements, storyboard form, short story jeopardy game INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES: Focus of Lesson: Short Story Bell Ringers: Monday: Tuesday: Wednesday: Thursday: Friday: Weekly bell ringers are discussed and assessed. Daily SATP/JBHM Practice Test Items (See Projector Board.)

Anticipatory Set/Lesson Introduction Strategies: Monday: TSW complete a quick write activity. Make a list of situations that might make someone feel proud. Is pride positive or negative-can it be both? Jot down your thoughts about what it means to e proud. Tuesday: Thursday: Friday: TSW complete vocabulary development practices. TSW recall as many different prepositions as they can. Quick Write: Think about someone who means a great deal to you. What is this person like? Why is he or she important to you? Write down a few sentences explaining what this person means to you. Instruction/Modeling: Monday: TTW introduce the following vocabulary words from The Scarlet Ibis: setting, symbolism, allegory, inferences, sullenly, reiterated, Wednesday: TSW play review game for symbolism terms.

TTW administer weekly test on the assigned reading material. Differentiated Instruction Strategies: Monday: Tuesday: TSW be grouped to discuss and analyze the text. TSW construct a story map for the assigned short story. TSW participate in group discussion on symbols in text. TSW participate in writing their own stories using vocabulary words. Wednesday: TSW refer to previous texts to identify symbols identified in the story. Thursday: Friday: Students will identify the different types of prepositional phrases. Students will generate sentences with prepositional phrases. Students will discuss and analyze the text. Students will identify the synonyms, antonyms and connotation of vocabulary words. Students will play short story jeopardy. Wednesday: TSW make a poster of symbols. TSW present their findings to the

Guided Instruction Strategies: Monday-Friday 1. The students will respond to story referenced questions asked by instructor. 2. Instructor will assist students with questions that may arise. 3. The students will receive assistance from teacher on their activities. Independent Practice Activities: Monday-Friday The student will complete the following assignments for The Scarlet Ibis with at least 80% mastery: 1. The Scarlet Ibis Vocabulary Definitions 2. Short Story Jeopardy 3. The Scarlet Ibis Guided Reading Questions 4. Identifying Basic Literary terms in The Scarlet Ibis. Using Plot to find themes in the short story. Completing symbolism chart for the short story. Completing graphic organizers related to the text and reading comprehension activities related to the text. 5. The Scarlet Ibis Objective Test 6. The Scarlet Ibis Subjective Test Intervention Strategies: Prompting, Cueing, Modeling, Paraphrasing, Individual Assistance, Extra Time, Oral Directions, Peer Tutoring Enrichment Activities: TTW instruct students who complete the assignments work in pairs to complete daily extended vocabulary activities or to complete journal writing activities.

Closure: TTW recap the lesson by restating the objective, purpose, and relevance. Students will take notes on story and vocabulary. TTW assign, explain, review and model homework if applicable. TSW observe teacher modeling, and ask questions if necessary. Exit ticket. H/W: Study notes, complete journal activities, etc.
