Arranging Icons on the Desktop Start button Quick Launch toolbar Notification area Right click on the Desktop and choose Arrange Icons By. Show Desktop Icons Hides or shows all desktop icons. Auto Arrange - Automatically arranges the desktop icons on the left of the screen. o Choose Name, Size, Type, or Modified to specify the order in Auto Arrange. Note: A checkmark in front of an item, it is active.

Working with Windows


Common Features of Open Windows Open My Documents (Start My Documents) Title Bar The colored bar at the top. o Control Menu Left button o Minimize Button o Maximize/Restore Button o Close Button Menu Bar (File, Edit, View, Favorites, etc.) Toolbars (View Toolbars ... ) o Standard Buttons o Address Bar Displays location of the selected folder. Enter a web address and click on Go to go to a web address. Status Bar (View Status Bar) Scroll Bars (optional) If the information does not fit in the window, scroll bars are available on the side, at the bottom, or both.

Working with Scroll Bars Click the up or down arrows to move slowly through the screen. Click and drag the scroll bar to the desired location. Click above or below the scroll bar to advance a full screen at a time. The wheel on the mouse can also be used to scroll up or down when the cursor is in the window. Changing the View of Icons in Open Windows Open My Documents (Start My Documents) Click on View o Filmstrip (Only available for My Pictures folder and folders with pictures.) o Thumbnails (good for viewing photos and graphics) o Tiles, Icons, List and Details (shows name, size, type and date modified)

Manipulating Open Windows


Minimize/Maximize/Restore a Window Click the appropriate button in the upper-right corner of the window. Minimize button - Reduces the open window to a button on the taskbar. Maximize button - Expands the open window to fill the entire screen. Restore button - Restores a maximized window to its previous size. Close button - Closes a window and removes its button from the taskbar. Note - Double click on the Title Bar to maximize/minimize the window.

Moving Open Windows Click on the Title Bar and drag the window to the desired location. Note: A window displayed full screen cannot be moved. Resizing Open Windows Place the cursor over a border or corner of the window. (The cursor becomes a double-headed arrow. ) Click and drag the window to the desired size. Note: A window displayed full screen cannot be resized. Tips and Tricks Press Windows+D on the keyboard to minimize all open windows. Press Windows+D again to maximize all windows.

Navigating Using the Toolbar Icon


Returns to the previous window. Moves forward to the next window. Moves up a level. (Notice the address on the address bar.) Opens the Search Companion window to allow searching for documents, pictures, music, etc. Changes the view of the left side of the window to show a list of storage locations and folders rather than a list of common tasks. Allows quick changes of the view of the window. Choose between Filmstrip, Thumbnails, Tiles, Icons, List or Details.

Description

Customizing the Taskbar


The Start Menu Left Side - Access to programs/items most commonly used by the user. Right Side - Access to most commonly used Windows folders. The default storage location for files of all kinds, including My Documents pictures, music, and movies. My Documents contains the My Pictures default folders of My Music and My Pictures. My Music Contains a list of documents worked on recently. My Recent Documents The default folder that stores information about drives My Computer connected to the computer. Contains information about other computers and shared My Network Places folders on the network. The default location for managing all kinds of programs Control Panel and services on the computer. A folder that contains the dial-up and broadband Network Connections connections, as well as local area network connections. Shows installed printers and fax printers and helps in Printers and Faxes adding new ones. Windows XP help and support feature that can answer Help and Support questions and locate answers on the Internet Helps find items on the computer or items on the Internet, Search including other people! The Run dialog box can be used to open programs, Run folders, documents or web sites. These standard icons enable the user to log off, shut down, Log Off/Turn Off Computer/Switch User or restart the computer, or switch the user. Start Menu Style (Windows XP or Windows 95/98 style) Right click on the Start button and choose Properties. Click on the Start Menu tab. Choose Start menu to select the Windows XP Start menu. Choose Classic Start menu to select the Windows 95/98 Start menu. Click on OK. Start Menu Appearance Right click on the Start button and choose Properties. Click on the Start Menu tab. Click on the Customize button. Select Large icons or Small icons. Select the Number of programs on Start menu. This is a list of shortcuts to programs used most often. Select the Internet browser and/or E-mail program to display them in the Start menu. Remove the checkmark to not display these options. Click on OK. Customizing the Start Menu Right click on the Start button and choose Properties. Click on the Start Menu tab. Click on the Customize button next to Start menu or Classic Start menu Click on the Advanced tab. In the Start menu settings section, o Choose Open submenus when I pause on them with mouse to open submenus when the mouse is over an item. o Choose Highlight newly installed programs to have newly installed programs highlighted. In the Start menu items window, select the desired items and options (i.e. Display as link vs. Display as menu). In the Recent Documents section, check the box to show recent documents in the Start menu. (Click on the Clear List button to clear the current list. Click on OK. Pinning a Program to the Start menu Click on Start All Programs and locate the desired program. Right click on the name of the program and choose Pin to Start menu. (The program is displayed in the items list above the separator line on the Start menu.) Unpin a program by right clicking the program name and choosing Unpin from Start menu. Change the order of the programs in the list by clicking and dragging the name of the program to the desired position. Note - Items in the Classic Start menu cannot be pinned or unpinned. Notice the option to Sort by name when right clicking in the Programs menu

Adding a Program Shortcut on the Desktop Click on the Start All Programs and locate the program. Right click on the program, and choose Send to Desktop (create shortcut). Changing the Taskbar Appearance Right click on the Start button and choose Properties. Click on the Taskbar tab. In the Taskbar Appearance section, chose the desired items. o Lock the Taskbar Locks the Taskbar to prevent changes. o Auto-hide the Taskbar The Taskbar remains hidden until the cursor is over it. o Keep the Taskbar on top of other windows The Taskbar stays on top. o Group similar Taskbar buttons Multiple buttons of the same program are grouped (stacked) together. o Show Quick Launch Quick Launch is displayed. In the Notification area, choose the desired items. o Show the clock Displays the clock. o Hide inactive icons Hides icons that are not active. Click on OK.

Customizing the Desktop


Setting a Desktop Background Right click on the Desktop and choose Properties. Click on the Desktop tab. In the Background window, choose the desired background. Click on the down arrow in the Position box and choose to position of the background (Center, Tile or Stretch). Note: For a solid color, choose None as the background and then click on the Color button to choose the desired background color. Click on OK. Picture from a Website Open the web browser and find a graphic or picture on a web site to use as the desktop background www.desktoppictures.com (click on Free Pictures) If possible, choose a graphic that matches the screen resolution of the computer (800x600, 1024x768, etc.). Note: To see the screen resolution settings of the computer, o Right click on the Desktop and choose Properties. o Click on the Settings tab. Right click on the graphic or picture and choose Set as Background. To see the background on the Desktop, press Windows D to minimize all open windows. Press Windows D a second time to maximize the open windows.

Saving a Picture from a Website Locate the desired picture on the Web. Right click on the picture and choose Save Picture As... Notice the location the picture will be saved to. The My Pictures folder (in the My Documents folder) is the standard location. Click on the Create New Folder button on the toolbar at the top of the window. Type in a name for the folder and press Enter. Double-click on the folder to open it. Rename the picture if desired. Click on the Save button. Using a Picture in the My Pictures Folder Click on Start My Pictures. Locate and click on the picture to be used as a background. Under Picture Tasks in the left menu, choose Set as desktop background OR right click on the picture and choose Set as desktop background. Setting the Screen Saver Right click on the Desktop and choose Properties. Click on the Screen Saver tab. Click on the down arrow in the Screen saver box and choose the desired screen saver. Note: The My Pictures Slideshow shows a slideshow of pictures in a folder on the computer. (Click on the Settings button and then Browse to the folder of pictures.) Click on the Settings button to change the settings of any screen saver (i.e. speed, color, text, etc.). Each is different. To preview the chosen screen saver, click on the Preview button. To stop the screen saver preview, move the mouse. Click on OK. Changing the Screen Resolution Right click on the Desktop and choose Properties. Click on the Settings tab. In the Screen Resolution section, click and drag the slide bar to change from 800 x 600 to 1024 x 768, etc. Note: The larger the screen resolution, the smaller the icons, text, and other items on the desktop appear. Click on OK.

Changing the Desktop Theme Note: A theme is a background with a set of sounds, icons, and other elements to help personalize the computer. More themes can be purchased from Microsoft. Right click on the Desktop and choose Properties. Click on the Themes tab. Click on the down arrow in the Theme box and choose the desired theme. Note: There is a desktop theme for Windows Classic which makes the Desktop appear like previous versions of the Windows operating system. Click on OK. Changing the Appearance of Windows Elements Right click on the Desktop and choose Properties. Click on the Appearance tab. Click on the down arrow of the Windows and buttons box and choose Windows XP style or Windows Classic style. Click on the down arrow of the Color scheme box and choose the Default (blue), Olive Green or Silver color scheme. Click on the down arrow of the Font size box and choose a font size. Click on OK.

Using Windows Accessories


Games Click on Start All Programs Games. Calculator Click on Start All Programs Accessories Calculator. Performing a simple calculation o Enter the first number in the calculation. o Click on + to add, - to subtract, * to multiply, or / to divide. o Enter the next number in the calculation. o Enter any remaining numbers or operators. o Click on the = sign. The numeric keypad on the keyboard can be used to enter numbers and operators. o Make sure the NUM LOCK key is selected. To find out what specific keys do, right click on the key and choose Whats This? Performing scientific calculations o On the Menu Bar, click on View Scientific. o Choose a Number System (Dec, Bin, etc.). o Choose the display. (i.e. for decimal numbers, the choices are degrees, radians, or gradients.) o Notice the additional keys available. o Perform the calculation.

WordPad Click on Start All Programs Accessories WordPad. Type the text into the document window. Format the text by choosing the font, font size, color, and alignment. Bullets are also available. To save the document, on the Menu Bar, click on File Save As... Notice where the document is being saved by looking at the Save in box. Type in a File name. Click on the Save button. Note: WordPad is a very basic word processor which does not contain the functionality of major word processing applications, such as Corel WordPerfect or Microsoft Word.

Paint
Click on Start All Programs Accessories Paint. Seeing the Tools The tools used in Paint are the Tool Box, the Color Box, the Status Bar, and the Text Toolbar. On the Menu Bar, click on View and notice the list of tools. A tool which has a check mark in front of it is showing. Clicking on an item to remove the check mark causes the tool to not be displayed on the screen. Creating a Picture Set the Image Size by clicking on Image Attributes... Note: Set the Image Size to match the screen resolution of the computer creating a picture to be used as Desktop wallpaper. (i.e. 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768) Create a picture using the drawing tools. Editing a Picture Open a picture by clicking on the Menu Bar on File Open. Navigate to the location of the desired picture. Click on the desired picture. Click on the Open button. Cropping a Picture In Windows Paint, a picture can only be cropped from the middle of the right side, the middle of the bottom edge or the bottom right corner. Place the cursor over the image resize handles located at the lower right corner, the middle the bottom edge or the middle of the right side of the picture. (The cursor changes to a two-headed arrow.) Click and drag the picture to the desired size. Undo

On the Menu Bar, click on Edit Undo. Note: Windows Paint only undoes the last 3 steps.

Rotating/Flipping a picture On the Menu Bar, click on Image Flip/Rotate. Choose Flip Horizontal, Flip Vertical, or Rotate at an angle. Click on OK. Erasing Part of a Picture In the Tool Box, click on the Eraser tool. In the bottom of the Tool Box, choose the size of the eraser. The color of the eraser is the background color. Click and drag over the area to be erased. Adding Text In the Tool Box, click on the Text tool. Color or Transparent Background o At the bottom of the Tool Box is the box to select a color background or a transparent background. o Color Background A color background can be placed behind the text. This will cover the picture under the text box. At the bottom of the Tool Box, click on the Color background box (the top one). In the Color Box, the box at the left shows the foreground color and the background color. To choose a color for the background, right click on the desired color in the Color Box. o Transparent Background A transparent background allows the picture to show through the text box. At the bottom of the Tool Box, click on the Transparent background box (the bottom one). Click and drag a text box onto the picture. Notice the Text Toolbar. If the Text Toolbar does not appear, on the Menu Bar, click on View Text Toolbar. Click on the down arrows and choose a font, font size, and attributes from the Text Toolbar. Note: Be careful not to click outside the text box. Clicking outside the text box sets the text on the picture. Choose a text color from the Color Palette in the Color Box. Type the desired text. Formatting Text o Highlight the text. o In the Text Toolbar, click on the down arrows and choose a new font, size, or attribute and/or choose a color from the Color Palette. Resizing a Text Box o Place the cursor over a sizing handle located on any corner or the top, bottom, left, or right side of the box. (The cursor changes to a two-headed arrow.) o Click and drag to change the text box to the desired size. Moving a Text Box o Place the cursor on the edge of the box. (The very tip of the arrow needs to be right on the edge.) o Click and drag the text box to the desired location.

Adding Color With the Fill Bucket In the Tool Box, click on the Fill with Color button. In the Color Box, click on the desired color. Click in the area to be colored. Warning The area being colored must be a closed curve, (No openings for leaks.) or the color will leak out into other areas of the picture. With the Brush In the Tool Box, click on the Brush button. In the Color Box, click on the desired color. Click and drag over the area to be colored. Picking a Color A precise color can be chosen to match the picture. Zoom in on the desired area to see greater detail. In the Tool Box, click on the Color Pick button. Click on the desired color in the picture. Choose the Fill Bucket or the Brush as desired. Add color to the desired portion of the picture. Saving a Picture On the Menu Bar, click on File Save As... Navigate to the desired location to save the picture. (My Pictures is the usual location.) Type in a name in the File name box. Choosing a File Type o Notice the File Type. o To use the picture in other programs, change the file type to JPEG. This will compress the picture which helps to reduce the file size. Click on Save Using Paint to work with Screen Captures Have the window or area to be captured open on the screen. Hold down the Alt key and press the Print Screen button on the keyboard. Open Windows Paint (Start-All Programs-Accessories-Paint) On the Menu Bar, click on Edit Paste to paste the screen capture into the Paint window. Save the picture as a JPEG. o On the Menu Bar, click on File Save As. o Click on the down arrow in the Save as type box and choose JPEG. o Type a name for the screen capture and click on the Save button.

Windows Media Player 10


Some of Windows Media Players functions work best with a live Internet connection. Opening Windows Media Player Click on Start All Programs Accessories Windows Media Player. Playing music from a CD Place a music CD into the CD-ROM drive If the Audio CD window opens, choose Play Audio CD using Windows Media Player Click on OK Notes: If the CD does not automatically start to play, click on the down arrow next to Now Playing, and choose the CD-Rom drive.

Media Player Controls


Button Name Play/Pause Description/Use Click on the Play button to play the selection. While the selection is playing, the Play button becomes the Pause button. Click on the Pause button to stop the selection but remain in the same location in the song. Click on the Stop button to stop the selection and return to the beginning. Click on the Previous button to move to the previous track. Click on the Next button to move to the next track. Click on the Mute button to mute the sound. The music/sound continues to play. Click and drag the Volume slider to adjust the volume. This controls the volume of the selection leaving the computer. Volume of the computer speakers is controlled on the speakers. Click on the Switch to Skin Mode button to switch to Skin Mode. Click on the Return to Full Mode button while in Skin Mode to return to Full Mode. The numbers indicate the amount of time left in playing the selection. The Repeat/Shuffle button shuffles the selection order and plays continuously from the playlist.

Changing Tracks Double click on the desired track in the Playlist to play that track. Moving to a Location in a Song Click on the slider bar above the control buttons on the desired location in the selection.

Visualizations Click on the Now Playing tab. Click on the Select Now Playing Options button (down arrow). Place the cursor over Visualizations and then slide over and choose the desired visualization or choose No visualization. To change to the next or previous visualization, click on the Previous visualization button or the Next visualization button. To see the visualization full screen, double click in the middle of the visualization. To return from full screen visualization, double click in the middle of the visualization. Now Playing Displays the selection currently playing with a list of the songs in the album on the right. Quick Access Panel This is a small down arrow between Now Playing and Library. It gives quick access to the selections on the computer. Library Displays the contents of the library on the computer. The left window displays the various locations. The middle window displays the selections with the title, artist, and the album, length, etc. Ripping to the Computer Rip means to pull the music from a CD. Insert the CD in the drive. Click on the Rip tab on the toolbar. Tracks with a checkmark in front of them will be ripped. Click on the Rip Music button. Select keep the current settings and then click on the OK button. The computer will display the progress in the window. The music is copied to the computer. Note The default file format is set to be .wma. To change the default setting to .mp3 o Click on Tools Options. o Click on the Rip Music tab. o Click on the Format box and choose .mp3. o Click on OK. Deleting songs from the Library To remove a song, right click on the song area and choose Delete. Choose to either delete the song from just the library or from the library and from the computer. Playlists
Playlists allow the user to create their own lists of music that can be played on the computer or burned to a CD. Creating a Playlist Click on the Library tab at the top. Click on the Now Playing List button in the upper right hand corner. Choose New List from the drop down menu and click on Playlist. In the Library, locate the desired songs. Click on the desired song(s) and drag it (them) to the Playlist area on the right. Save the Playlist by o Clicking on the New Playlist button in the upper right hand corner. o Choosing Save Playlist As. o Give the Playlist a name. o Click on the Save button. Note The Playlists are saved in the My Music/My Playlists folder. Opening a Playlist Click on the Library tab at the top. Double click on My Playlists in the left hand column. Click on the desired playlist. Editing a Playlist Click on the Library tab at the top. Double click on My Playlists in the left hand column. Click on the desired playlist. To add a new song, navigate to the location of the song and drag it to the Playlist area on the right. To remove a song, right click on the song in the Playlist area and choose Remove from list. To rename a song, right click on the desired song and choose Edit and type in the desired name. o Renaming a song changes the name of the song in the entire library. Save the Playlist by o Clicking on the New Playlist button in the upper right hand corner. o Choosing Save Playlist As. o Give the Playlist a name. To replace the original playlist, use the same name. o Click on the Save button. Rating Songs Click on the Library tab at the top. Choose the Album or Playlist where the song is located. Move the mouse over the rating stars in the rating column next to the desired song. Click when the desired number of stars have been highlighted in yellow. Accessing Rated Songs Click on the Library tab at the top. Click on the + next to All Music. Click on Rated Songs. Double-click on the desired rating to see the songs. Burning a CD This allows CDs to be created from the music saved to the computer. The computer must have a CD burner in order to use this option. Click on the Burn tab. Click on Burn List above the left window and choose the desired source such as a playlist. Select the music to be burned by placing a check mark in front of each. Click on the down arrow above the right window and choose the destination. Click on the Start Burn button above the left window. Wait while the CD is burned. Sync This option allows music on an external player such as an MP3 player to be synchronized with the list on the computer.

Word Processor Programs


Opening a Word Processor Most computers have a word processing program installed. Microsoft Word Click on Start All Programs Microsoft Office Microsoft Word OR click on Start All Programs Microsoft Word. WordPerfect Click on Start All Programs WordPerfect Office WordPerfect. Saving Documents On the Menu Bar, click on File Save As... Notice where the document is being saved. Click on the down arrow next of the Save in box and choose the desired folder. (i.e. - C:\My Documents) o My Documents - located right beneath Desktop. This is tied directly to the user logged in to the computer. Type in a File name Click on the Save button. Closing a Document Click on the second Close button is to close the document being worked on. Click on the top Close button to close the word processor program. OR on the Menu Bar, click on File Close. File Management within My Documents


Finding and Opening Documents Click on Start My Documents. Locate the document to be opened. (Double click on folders to open them as needed.) o Pictures are frequently stored in My Pictures. o Music is frequently stored in My Music. Double-click on the document to open it. Note: Click on Start Recent Documents to open recently used documents. Creating New Folders Click on Start My Documents and open the desired location. In the File and Folder Tasks section, click on Make a new folder. OR right click in the window, choose New, and then click on Folder. Type a name for the new folder and then press Enter Renaming Folders or Files Click on Start My Documents and open the desired location. Click on the name of the folder or file to be renamed. In the File and Folder Tasks section, click on Rename this folder or Rename this file OR right click on the folder or file and choose Rename. Type a name for the folder or file and then press Enter. Moving or Copying Folders or Files Click on Start My Documents and open the desired location. Right click on the desired file or folder and drag it on top of the new folder. Click on Move. OR in the File and Folder Tasks section, click on Move this file (folder) or Copy this file (folder). Navigate to and click on the desired location for the file (folder). Note: Clicking on the + in front of drives or folders will open the drive or folder. Click on the Move (Copy) button. Selecting Multiple Files to Copy, Move, or Delete Files grouped together in an adjacent list. o Click on the first file in the list. o Press the Shift key and click on the last file in the list. Files that are not adjacent o Click on the first file to be selected. o Press the Control key and click on each file to be added to the list. o Note To remove a file from the selection, press the Control key and click on the file.

Sending a Copy of a Folder or File Click on Start My Documents and open the desired location. Right click on the folder or file to be copied and choose Send To. o To copy to a 3 floppy disk, choose 3 floppy (A:) o To copy to a removable drive such as a thumb drive, jump drive, etc., choose the appropriate drive. o To put a shortcut to the Desktop, choose Desktop (Create shortcut) o To copy to a CD drive that can later be copied to CD, choose DirectCD Drive Deleting Files or Folders Click on Start My Documents and open the desired location. Click on the name of the folder or file to be deleted. In the File and Folder Tasks section, click on Delete this file (folder). Click on Yes to delete the file (folder) OR right click on the folder or file and choose Delete. Note: Only folders or files located on the hard drive will be sent to the Recycle Bin when deleted. All others will be completely removed.

Using the Recycle Bin


Double click the Recycle Bin to open it. Restoring folders or files o Right click on the file(s) or folder(s) and then click on Restore. o To restore all of the items, click on Edit in the menu and choose Select All, then click on File in the menu and choose Restore Note: Restoring an item in the Recycle Bin returns that item to its original location. Deleting folders of files o Right click on the file(s) or folder(s) and then click on Delete. o To delete all of the items, on the Menu Bar, click on File Empty Recycle Bin.

Using Windows Help and Support


Click on Start Help and Support. Click on desired topic from the menu on the left To return back to the home page, click on the Home button. To return to the previous screen, click on the Back button. To search for specific topics, use the search box in the upper right corner

Basic Troubleshooting Tips


Shutting down a program that has frozen Hold down Ctrl and Alt and press Delete one time. From the pop-up window choose Task List... Click on the Applications tab. The window displays the tasks that are currently running. Click on the name of the task that is not responding. (It may have the words not responding in the Status column.) Restarting the Computer Click on Start and choose Shut Down Choose Restart the computer Click on OK Shutting Down the Computer Click on Start and choose Shut Down Choose Shut down Click on OK Emergency Shutdown Hold down Ctrl and Alt and press Delete one time. In the window, click on the Shutdown... button. LAST RESORT!!! Press the power button on the computer and hold it down 10 seconds. Wait 20-30 seconds, then press the power button again to start the computer.
