GUIDE: ATI Radeon Mobility x1400 Working with Full Resolution & QE/CI Enabled

Disclaimer: I do not take responsibility for any adverse effects that this guide or topic discussion may cause for you. Please backup before making changes and read all of the instructions carefully. Further, I would just like to say that I do not condone pirating software. I own Leopard (and Snow Leopard) and did this out of curiosity to an issue that has been confusing many of us on these forums for at least a year. Lastly, please do not hesitate to ask questions over at InsanelyMac Forums. A big thanks to Dong and everyone involved in creating the wonderful ATI Framebuffer. Note: Steps 1 to 8 in this guide are performed on a Windows based machine (or VM/Boot Camp). There probably are a few Mac EDID software extractors but I havent looked. Also, Im doing this on an Acer 5670/5672. Specs can be found at the following for those interested: http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2780 1. Download ATI_Kexts.zip from: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?s=0b68266ae0e728eac1ea115fff4c0a6f&act=at tach&type=post&id=60991 2. Extract the above .zip file and you should have 2 folders: ATIRadeonX1000.kext & RadeonHD.kext 3. Using any text editor, edit the info.plist file from ATIRadeonX1000.kext and change the following string: from 0x71861002 to 0x71451002 (because the dev id for the Mobility x1400 is 7145. It's 7186 for the x1350).

4. Download a freeware program called softMCCS (http://www.entechtaiwan.com/lib/softmccs.shtm). This is used to extract your EDID information for placement inside the RadeonHD.kext info.plist. 5. Once downloaded, launch softMCCS and go to file->save EDID as

Then choose file type "Viewsonic EDID file (*.dat)" to save your EDID.dat file.

6. Open your newly saved EDID.dat file with any text editor, and remove all the white space from the beginning of the file, and remove the headers and columns (so essentially, you're left with rows and columns of xx data). Now format all of these xx data bits into groups of 8 followed by a space, so you basically have 32 chunks of xxxxxxxx data (xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx etc...). See below for before and after pictures. Furthermore, you may download my modified versions to get an idea (http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=60992).

7. Now that we've got our modified EDID.dat file, copy and paste all of the 32 chunks, and paste them into the RadeonHD.kext info.plist file, under the section <key>EDID</key><data>.

8. Copy your modified .kext files from the above steps to a thumb drive or something else if youre installing OSX on the same drive (duh). 9. Install your OSX flavour of choice (Ive tested this with both iDeneb & iAtkos 10.5.7. I havent tried this with Snow Leopard yet). 10. Download Kext Helper from http://cheetha.net/. Install it by dragging it to your Applications folder. 11. Launch Kext Helper, and first install your modified ATIRadeonX1000.kext by dragging it into the main window of Kext Helper, typing in your password, and clicking on Easy Install.

12. Once completed, repair your disk permissions using the included Disk Utility in OSX and reboot. 13. Again using Kext Helper, now install your modified RadeonHD.kext, repair disk permissions as in step 11, and reboot once again.

14. If you get a kernel panic, reboot using -v -f commands. If all boots well, you should now be able to change your screen resolution to 1280 x 800 with QE/CI. YAY!!!
