Xploded Siheyuan

Graduation project TU Delft, feb 06 - jul 07 Under management of. Marc Koehler, Elise van Dooren en Karina Moraes Zarzar Xploded Siheyuan is my graduation project situated in China, Beijing and based on Chinese culture and its current development. The basic principle of the design and research is the tension between tradition and modernity. The design consists of 19 rectangle volumes with square ground floors, spread out in a public area between Tiananmensquare and a traditional hutong-area: Dazhalan. The grand communist public spaces and streets like the Tiananmensquare and its adjacent boulevards contrast to the introvert hutong areas, where public space consist of narrow streets and alleys. The public space directed by the volumes in the design is unique in this area and should be able to stimulate interaction on a more subtile and distinguished manner. Each volume houses a commercial space (gallery/restaurant/shop) and 17 volumes comprise of a 3 levels apartment; living/kitchen, sleeping/bath/work, roof patio. The apartments are a vertical interpretation of the historical lay-out of the courtyard house. Underground beneath the volumes is a big parking with private (for the apartment owners) and public parking access. Defamiliarization
view from Tiananmensquare

In this project I used the Defamiliarization theory to answer the question: how to encounter the dilemma of modernizing or preserving tradition? Defamiliarisation as an architectural theory is evolved out of (or a reaction upon) Critical Regionalism by and it deals with this dilemma. Most vital to the theory is the assumption that when an object is placed outside of its context, is transformed and/or placed into a new context, the object becomes unfamiliar, this increases the difficulty and length of perception. The process of perception is the aesthetic end in itself and must be prolonged. (Shklovsky, 1917). The approach is however gentle and subtle and not a mere copy of the past that will fail the moment of perception, because the viewer wont be drawn to the object, but will be bored with overfamiliarization. Dazhalan in central Beijing (old city)

Tiananmensquare and design location commerce in Dazhalan

Dazhalan is a hutong area in central Beijing. These kind of hutong areas are mainly demolished in the purpose of preservation. Really, many are rebuild from scratch as a replica of ancient times with the loss of the past architectural/urban transformation, the loss of its inhabitants and with that the loss of a very distinct social and cultural place (gentrification). Dazhalan is one of the areas under pressure of a modernizing city. With the new traffic road through Dazhalan already a lot of hutong houses are torn down. However, the power of Dazhalan is that next to a dwelling neighbourhood, it is also an acknowledged very active busy commercial and cultural zone. The construction of the new road gave me the opportunity to create a reactivation zone adjacent to the Tiananmen Square. On the border commercial / cultural / dwelling between grand controlled public space and introvert hutong on the other side, the inner space of the project becomes the transition zone between huge contrasts. The units can be fitted all along this border area as a sort of organism of transition, partially due to its generic free arrangeable floor plans.

The image of the facade is derived from an analysis of window patterns that I have seen many times at many places in Beijing. This specific iceray pattern appears at first chaotic, randomly placed lattices. However, there is a set of rules, most important: a junction is always a T-junction, connecting only two lines. The pattern became literally the leitmotiv for the design, where it constructively, programmatically and aesthetically contributed to the architecture. Construction

The constructive iceray consist of HE-A steel beams, supporting the floor load in the center of the horizontal IPE floor beams within a 1/3 margin. These diagonal beams also take on the diagonal forces on the construction. Because the icerays rule is to avoid multiple beam joints, joints have to be fixed end moments. On the outer facade the construction is represented by UNP beams. Program Programmatically the iceray determines the interior spaces. The diagonals lead to skewed walls and elements, creating exciting spaces. The skewed walls determine the furniture, like the bathtub which emerges out of it. The stairs, ascending in a spiral along the facade, are represented in the constructive elements on the facade. Along the stairs are semi-transparent facade parts, divided as a smaller iceray. These semi-transparent milkwhite parts refer to the traditional rice paper (in traditional use the rice paper was pasted to the iceray lattices).

Bike Stall

Competition - nominated, 2010 Individual (qupus) Due to large scale redevelopment, the city Nieuwegein launched a competition for a new bike stall in the centre, at the side entrance of the shopping mall Cityplaza. In my design the main principals were surveyability and effectivity. Essential for the success of this stall is a visible entrance close to the entrance of the Cityplaza. The entrance of the stall is marked with a red floor. The routing through the stall is designed to give the visitor a clear view on the available stalling places. The ground floor program holds bikes and motorbikes stalled behind the control room for the employee, whos watching the stall and carrying out some repairs. There is a wide and slant bicycle-friendly staircase ascending to the second floor where the rest of the bikes can be stored, a bicycle-unfriendly stair is leading from the 2nd floor via the exit into the direction of the shopping mall entrance. Back from the mall the visitor can take the same route backwards. The judge honoured the clear design, which is effective and orderly organized. The image gives a proper expression of the internal logic.

SHANGHAI

Study en sketch design, 2008 Groupa, i.a. Maarten van Bremen, Lolke Ket, Suzanne Linders, Dirk Zschunke, Matteo Bettoni, Chris Woltjes, Eveline vd Berg-Jeths. A client in China asked us for a study of a big scale urban intervention in Shanghai. The program consisted of parking, retail, offices, hotel, apartments and a supermarket. After extensive mass studies we chose to present the client 3 variations of very different potentials. Part of my share was the proposal of the grid-model, based on my experience from my graduation project.

NOSPR Concert Hall

Katowice, competition, 2008, Honourable Mention. GroupA, i.a. Folkert Van Hagen, Patrycja Wilczynska, Valerie Koppele, Cristina Magro, Bahar Akkoclu. The design for this competition in Katowice, Poland is based upon a splitted volume. A public pedestrian bridge slices through the volumes and connects the city with a cultural zone. Beneath the bridge the two volumes are connected. In the largest volume is big concert hall, in the smaller volume the entrance and a small concert hall. The interior is designed with very strict acoustic demands. The exterior shape is referring to the former mines in the city but with its translucent facade it is also a subtle contrast.

Utrecht, preliminary phase, 2008. GroupA, i.a. Folkert van Hagen, Philip Vencken, Birgitta Rottman, Matteo Bettoni, Gador Luque Martinez. For a new shopping center in Terwijde, Utrecht we designed 2 buildings (F and H). Both have a partial commercial ground floor topped with apartments around a collective courtyard. The warm courtyard is a pleasant contrast with the urban outside. The outer facade consist of 3 facade types that playfully interconnect. In this project I worked on the apartment plans, overall plans, sections, concept and 3d visualization.

Waternet

Amsterdam, closed competition, 2008. GroupA, i.a. Maarten van Bremen, Nolly Vos, Maarten Lever, Engin Kinsiz, Dirk Zschunke. The competition for a dredging company in Amsterdam was to design a floating office building including a new design for the accompanying harbour. Main design considerations came from the specific routing in the program. The building functions as a shower transition zone for the workers on the dredge ships. At the same time it houses an office for the other employees. These two separated functions are stacked as a dark and a bright program. In the patio central to the office space lies a water container for sustainable use of heating, flushing and as a day light reflector. The building is slightly tilted, challenging the floating capacity. This creates a visual tension between the building and its context. The punched corroded metal plates refer to the industrial character of the company. The sustainability was a major focus in this project.

Dorpsstraat, Ons Dorp

Competition, jan 08 pvanb architecten. Theme for this project was multiple generation housing. The competition plot in Drachten is divided in collective functions, like kitchen gardens, a recreation area, butterfly garden and a petting zoo. The next layer is a seemingly random arrangement of buildings. The west side is densified on village scale and forms a clearly defined border against the opposite park. The east side is the opposite in layout and opens up the plot. The archetype of the dutch house was the basic design concept.

petting zoo

the scaling of the dutch house archetype existing plot

This timeless shape identifies the idea of accommodating multiple generations. Through scaling the buildings a variety of dwelling types exist: ground floor accommodation, apartments, maisonettes, single houses. The different accommodation programs together with different positions in the collective yard create a huge diversity of choice, which could appeal to a large diverse group of people, independent of generation.

Tools for Design

TU Delft, Master2 project, dec 05 - feb 06 Mentor: Peter Lthi The location of this project offered the possibility to frame the Rotterdam Binnenrotte as a public square and supporting the continuity of the Meent street. Out of economic choice the whole plot is used for rentable program except for a central semi-public courtyard and a terrace on the third floor overlooking the Binnenrotte. The ground floor contains a commercial program, with a restaurant facing the market side. The rest is apartments and maisonettes, accessible from balconies in the courtyard. In this design course was a special focus on design methods, like hand drawings.

Membraan
TU Delft, switching semester project, sept 04 - feb 05 Mentor: Michel Melenhorst This project is based on the idea to replace the current railway to below ground level. This will provide the opportunity for a new above ground program. With a partial given and a partial free interpreted program of demands, this is applied to a new urban plan. Living, working and recreation go together with the new railway station. For a smooth traffic flow across the city there will be a new road above the railway. The current road is narrowed down and made only accessible to light traffic. This way the new part joins the inner cities car-free zone, providing extra living quality. In this plan there is more public space then in the current situation, due to the new square next to the station. Freedom of public use is a basic concept here. A small fixed program should provide a continuous active square, while a variable program of temporary events should enforce the autonomous character of the
urban plan of the railway station area, Delft foyer space on top of the theatre

The facade of the building functions as a membrane, that separates the interior from the outside and lets molecules pass through, regulating the life within the cell and protecting it. The facade is a steel construction with a light non-isolated inner and outer textile skin. You enter the building through one side of the cubes double skin. Between the other walls are the emergency exits. The volumes in the cube are free floating in the cube and each one is separately insulated. A glass roof provides for natural lighting. Eventually there is a closed inner space, which is intimate, but at the same time remains the contact with the outside by a thin wind and temperature permeable facade and the sunlight from above.

square. Central to the fixed program is the cubic theatre building which should activate the area as a evening/night-time attraction. The closed and iconic appearance is meant to raise curiosity of its visitors and passers-by. At big events the building should be able to open itself to the square. Closed, it houses three different free floating volumes. The lowest volume, supported by giant concrete legs houses an arena theatre, where the stage is entirely surrounded by the audience. On top of this volume is a platform with a bar for refreshments and relaxation. In the top of the cube is a black box theatre, where minimal decoration will increase the focus on individual performances. There is just a stage which can be adjusted to the desired size. Next to this hanging box there is another box for workshops and rehearsals.
