Capacity Building Initiative

Team Building II
Purpose
To provide necessary knowledge and experiences for the participants to help them
participate effectively in a team building effort.

Aim
The aim of the programme is to enable the participants to play their roles in a team
efficiently and effectively and to enhance team work. In particular, the programme will
enable trainees to:

 able to express openly and confront issues honestly and squarely;


 create supportive climate by building trust among team members;
 encourage high morale through cooperation and management of conflict;
 develop sound working procedures in decision making process;
 lead the team in both flexible and appropriate leadership or management
styles;
 improve team performance through regular review;
 possess personal skills and knowledge and enhance their capability in team
development;
 establish sound and effective inter-group relations to build bridges to link the
team with other parts of the organization;
 facilitate better and effective communication;

Target Group
Target groups for this training programme on “Team Building Level II” are particular
staff members of INGO/NGOs attended the “Team Building Level I” held from 20 to 21
September 2006 at CBI Office, Yangon and NGO staff those who are appropriate to this
level. The training is designed for the field project staff, middle level office staff NGOs
who required to work in team or team situation.

Duration
The complete programme consists of 12 learning sessions. Session times vary from
1:00 to 2:00 hours. The total programme will take 21 hours or approximately 3 full
working days.

Training Approach and Methods


The programme is based on the assumption that:
“Training is expensive”
“Money for training is scarce”

Therefore it looks upon training as an investment, and unless the training yields
results, the return on the money invested in it will be nil.

On their return home from the training programme, the participants should therefore
be able to prove improvement in management. In order to prepare and equip the
participants to achieve this, the programme will use highly active learning approach
through the use of participatory learning techniques.

Participants (working mostly in groups) will learn through simulated problem solving
exercises and guidance from the facilitators, who will act more as a “facilitator” of
learning than a lecturer.

Structure
The programme is divided into 12 sessions as shown below:

Were we sufficiently open and did we confront the real issues?

3. Support and Trust


Did we support and have trust each other?

4. Exchange of Experiences: Team Work in real situation in respective Organization

5. Co-operation and Conflict


Did we co-operate with each other and use the conflict of ideas and approaches
productively?
6. Sound Procedures
Were our working procedures and decision-making strategies sound?
7. Appropriate Leadership
Were we well led?

8. Regular Review
Did we review whether we could operate in a better way?

9. Individual Development
Did we utilize opportunities for development?

10. Sound Inter-group Relations.


Were our relations with other groups productive?

11. Good Communications


Did we communicate well?

12. Evaluation Session

Training Materials

Handouts and notes in Myanmar and English.

Follow-up and Evaluation

During the training and after completion of the training, appropriate evaluation will be
made to improve on going training as well as future training.

Expected Outcome

The training is expected to produce a group of individuals who are able to efficiently
and effectively participate in a team either as a team member or leader and to
achieve organizational development goals and objectives through effective team
work.

Interest Applicants

Interested applicant should meet the following requirements:

 Should be Myanmar; ie local staff


 Should have working knowledge of English
 Must be working for INGOs and LNGOs
 Must be able to give their full time and attention to the workshop during the
days it is conducted. Only participants who commit themselves to attending all
the sessions will be accepted.

Training group is limited to 18 participants (plus 3 reserves). If the number of


participants exceeds 18, organizations which nominate more than 3 staff will be asked
to nominate only three candidates.
