INTRODUCTION
Thank you for choosing to evaluate Northern Storage Suite. Your evaluation should be made within a non-clustered Microsoft Windows environment. You should have the following information available to you during the installation and primary configuration processes. The name and password of a user account that has Domain Administrator rights Either an existing MS SQL installation or a destination where the Northern Storage Suite installer can be allowed to create an MSDE installation If you will be storing data in an existing MS SQL server and you wish the Northern Storage Suite installer to create a database for your installation you will need the name and password of an account that can perform this action on the database server or you must be currently logged in with a Windows account that has these rights

EVALUATION LICENSE
Northern Storage Suite is shipped with a built-in 30-day evaluation period. This evaluation period if measured from the date and time when the Northern Storage Services were first started - not when the download of the software was made. An installation of Northern Storage Suite that is made for evaluation purposes can be changed into a production installation simply by licensing mechanisms. It is not necessary to uninstall and then reinstall the software.

INSTALLATION MODES
EVALUATION INSTALLATION
An Evaluation mode installation does not support installation within Windows cluster and installation choices are pre-configured where possible to shorten and simplify the installation process. The pre-configurations are: The setup role is set to Master Server The account for all NSS services is set to Local System Under Windows 2003, the NSS administrative group is set to local administrator group (under Windows 2000 this group must be specified during the installation) The MSDE database engine can be installed automatically if no MS-SQL server is available. The Evaluation mode offers a fully functional installation of Northern Storage Suite. This mode can be selected for Windows, and NAS evaluations. It provides the same feature set as the Production mode installation, through a less flexible and less complex process.
Notice! Evaluation Mode installation can be used on a production server, if the default configurations are suitable for that host.

PRODUCTION INSTALLATION
For installation in production environments [and/or evaluation on Microsoft Cluster and NAS systems], Northern Storage Suite should be installed in Production Mode. Consult the Northern Storage Suite Deployment Guide for instructions on how to use Production installation mode.

INTRODUCTION \ Evaluation License 3

In Production Mode, all configuration parameters of the installation can be changed. Due to performance limitations, an MS-SQL server is strongly recommended for production usage of Northern Storage Suite. As a consequence, the MSDE database engine cannot be selected during Production installation.

NORTHERN STORAGE SUITE DATABASE

USING MSDE
In production environments Northern strongly recommends the use of Microsoft SQL Server. However, when installing Northern Storage Suite for evaluation purposes an MSDE database can be used. MSDE is essentially a scaled-down version of Microsoft SQL Server and is available free of charge. An Evaluation mode installation includes the option to make an installation of MSDE. Use this option if you are not currently running MSDE or Microsoft SQL Server within your test environment. [It may be necessary for you to download MSDE from Northerns site, depending on which download options you chose previously, you will be prompted if this is the case.]

DEMONSTRATION DATABASE
Northern Storage Suite is supplied with a demonstration database allowing a quick evaluation of features that require historical data, such as trend analyses, cost projections, etc. The demonstration database contains usage statistics for a fictional network. You can browse this fictional network and inspect usage patterns, users, etc. When you are ready to begin analysing your own network you can create a new database, using the relevant Microsoft tools, and use the Configuration pages of Northern Storage Suite to establish a connection to this database. You may also wish to delete the demonstration database, again using the relevant Microsoft tools.

NAS TOPOLOGY
Northern Storage Suite offers the possibility to manage storage resource on non-Windows hosts through remote administration. This is achieved by working towards the remote host from an installation on a Windows server - the selected Windows server is often referred to as the Managing Host. This setup applies to all non-Windows NAS including NetApp filers and EMC NAS. For a Windows-based NAS, it is recommended to install NSS on the NAS itself.

INVOLVING END USERS

Northern Storage Portal offers you the possibility to include your users in your policy of storage control; to encourage them, within specific boundaries, to play a role in a sustainable SRM strategy. Besides the inclusion of Storage Portal links within your quota usage notifications and your users ability to view sorted lists of their files, one of the key ways in which Storage Portal allows you to involve your users is through the use of Grace Limits. Grace Limits are the boundaries within which your users can actively manage their own storage quotas. Specifically: Grace Limits define if your users can request quota increases, while Grace Limit Rules are your definitions as to how these requests are handled. The procedure below details how you can create rules to handle quota increase requests from your end-users. 1 Choose: Start > Programs > NORTHERN > Storage Suite > Storage Portal. The Northern Storage Portal client is displayed. 2 Choose the Rules view in the menu towards the top of the display. 3 In this view, click Add... The Rule Wizard Welcome page is displayed. Click Next. 4 The Account dialog is displayed. Select whether to handle requests for quota increases manually or automatically and click Next. Choosing to automatically handle these requests will reduce administrative overhead and options available in the later stages of this wizard enable you to remove any danger of automatically granting excessive quota increases.
Figure 36: Rule Wizard: Account dialog

TUTORIAL: WINDOWS \ Involving End Users 31

5 After selecting Automatically in the previous step and clicking next, you are asked to specify which NT Group this rule should be applied to. Specify Users for instance, using the format DOMAIN\USERS. You are also asked to supply the name of the Quota Server server where this rule should apply. Choose the server that is responsible for managing the quotas set on the NT Group Specified. Click Next.
Figure 37: Rule Wizard: Account dialog

Notice! The percentage of growth after each accepted request is the new total quota size, i.e. this figure must be given as 100% plus the desired increase.

6 The Growth dialog is displayed. Here you establish the boundaries within which your users are allowed to increase their storage quotas. Specify how much increase your users should be given after each, in this case automatically handled, request. Also state how many increases will be automatically allowed within a given time period. One quota increase of 10% every 30 days may be a reasonable strategy. Click Next.
Figure 38: Rule Wizard: Growth dialog

32 TUTORIAL: WINDOWS \ Involving End Users

7 The Notifications dialog is now displayed. Select how you would like to notify your users following accepted requests, via popup perhaps, and following denied requests, perhaps via email. Also specify how the administrator should be notified, similar settings as for users should suffice. Complete the additional fields with the relevant information. Click Next.

DEFINING A REPORT
Northern Storage Reporter offers insight into your storage status in two key ways. Northern Storage Reporters interface is in effect a gateway to storage data, its drill-down design enables you to investigate the status of any level of your network topology. Storage Reporter also offers a series of customizable reports. These reports should be used to form the basis of a semi-passive strategy of storage monitoring - configured to run at regular intervals, and brought to your attention when they have been run, these reports ensure you are always fully aware of your storage status. The following procedure details how to configure a report that will regularly inform you if any of your Northern Storage Suite hosts are approaching a critical level of storage use: 1 Choose: Start > Programs > NORTHERN > Storage Suite > Storage Reporter. The Northern Storage Reporter client is displayed. 2 Choose the Reports view in the menu towards the top of the display. 3 Now scroll to Host Near-full report and click the Define button. 4 The Schedule page is displayed. Click the Add... button towards the bottom of this page. 5 The Define Report Wizard Welcome dialog is displayed, click Next. 6 You are now asked to specify the threshold, in terms of percent full. All hosts found to be over this threshold will be included in your report. 90% is a reasonable value to use. Click Next.
Figure 40: Define Report Wizard: Threshold dialog

7 The Schedule dialog is now presented. Choose to have the report performed now or on a specific date. You can also choose a repetition rate for your report. Choosing to perform the report during the night on Sunday and selecting a repetition rate of every week will keep you regularly informed and prevent any unnecessary use of system resources during working hours. Click Next.

34 TUTORIAL: WINDOWS \ Defining a Report

8 The Notifications dialog is displayed. Select how you would like to be notified. A popup notification should be sufficient, reminding the administrator each Monday morning that a new report can be viewed in the Storage Reporter client. Type the relevant user name in the Popup Notification To: field and click Next.
Figure 41: Define Report Wizard: Notifications dialog

9 Now give your report a suitable name and description. You may want to include some details of the reports configuration, the threshold level and the run time/repetition settings for example. Click Next. 10 On the final dialog, click Finish to complete your report definition.

AUTOMATING A TASK
Northern Storage Assistant offers you the possibility to automate storage administration tasks. Storage Assistant can be given responsibility for any type of task, from very simple but timeconsuming and repetitive tasks, to very complex tasks that are prone to human error. The function of Northern Storage Assistant is centered around performing certain Actions when specific Event parameters are met. These two building blocks, Events and Actions, are held together in an Assistant. This is the key concept; creating Assistants by defining what Action should be taken when certain Events occur. The process below details how you can create an Assistant that, every Friday evening, will find any MP3 files stored in your users home directories and move them to an alternative folder for you to view or delete: 1 Choose: Start > Programs > NORTHERN > Storage Suite > Storage Assistant. The Northern Storage Assistant client is displayed. 2 Select a host in the Servers list, on the left-hand-side of the client. This host will be used to store the Event, Action and Assistant that you are about to create. Click the New Assistant... button. 3 The New Assistant control is displayed. Click Add.

10 In the Calendar tab specify the Active Range of the Day. Choose a start time in the evening, 9:00pm [21:00] perhaps. You do not need to specify an End time as the start time selected in this step and the repetition setting made in the previous step ensure this Event will only be true once every Friday from 9:00pm. 11 Give your Event a suitable name, "Friday at 9:00pm" perhaps, and click OK to return to the New Assistant control. You have now created your Event. 12 Now you must create an Action to associate with this Event. In the New Assistant dialog click Add and choose New Action > File Copy.

SPREADING COSTS
Northern Storage Chargeback offers you the possibility to spread the costs involved in maintaining your storage infrastructure. Creating a system of internal billing for this service that the IT department provides enables you to both spread cost awareness, most likely leading to a reduction in storage consumption, and to ensure that the money available to support this service always matches the need. Creating such a system with Northern Storage Chargeback ensures that calculations are always 100% accurate and always 100% automatic. The following procedure details how you can create a Chargeback Job that will apply charges for storage consumption to departments [user groups]: 1 Choose: Start > Programs > NORTHERN > Storage Suite > Storage Chargeback. The Northern Storage Chargeback client is displayed. 2 Click Add... The Chargeback Job Wizard Welcome page is displayed, click Next.
Notice! Extra configuration steps are required in order to use Exchange Mailbox data as the source of a Chargeback Job. Consult the relevant section of the User Guide for details.

3 You are now asked to specify which data source should be used. The data source is the service type for which costs will be calculated. Choosing File System will result in the cost associated with normal storage use being calculated, the Exchange Mailboxes option uses mailbox usage and the Quotas option bases costs on Quota Server quota size [100% quota not current usage]. Select File System and click Next.
