Digital TV : Hybrid Digital TV Abstract
Hybrid Digital TV is a device or service that uses two networks (broadcast and broadband) for data and application delivery. Typical hybrid devices are Internet-connected TV sets and set-top-boxes, PCs with broadcast tuners and mobile phones with broadcast receivers. A hybrid TV is able to receive traditional broadcast signals from commercial television channels and Internet-type content via broadband signals. The reception of hybrid TV, coming as it would from broadcast and broadband transmissions, would be facilitated through a set-top box that would harmonize and translate the signals before sending them along to the television itself. A hybrid device enables consumers to view all of these advanced services on their flat screen TV, via a single device. In addition to a broader range of content from TV providers ranging from traditional broadcast TV, video ondemand and catch-up TV services, like BBC iPlayer - hybrid digital TV also provides consumers with access to user-generated content either stored on an external hard drive, or cloud storage, and to a range of advanced interactive services and Internet applications. For the linear broadcast world, theres DVB, but the systems behind in an interactive world are more complex, leading to a proliferation of technologies and standards. Different market conditions in different countries have given rise to different approaches, leading to the use of different standards. MHEG-5 in the UK, DVBs MHP in Italy and HbbTV in Germany, France and elsewhere. Hybrid TVs success is not yet assured, and the public offering needs to be based on simple principles of finding content, consistent with the independent Internet TV system, and many believe this pattern should not be repeated when the broadcasters offer their services to the consumer.
