Traveling Through Your Taste

By Glenmor L. Sibal
Traveling around the world through your taste buds has never been this easy and fun. With the return of Gastronomia comes SET MENU: INTERCONTINENTAL WITH TABLE SETTING AND MENU CARD CONTEST, held last November 30, 2010 at the FEU Pavilion. In 2008, the Hotel and Restaurant Management Society (HRMSOC) organized the event exclusively for HRM students with the aim of promoting world culinary arts by trying to impress the judges with dishes of international standards. The six competing teams exhibited extensive selections of food and services from different countries all over the world, specifically China, Korea, Spain, France, Italy, and the Philippines. The judges and public were really impressed as the participants passion for cooking was manifestly tasted in every bite of their delicious creations. Taste, Mise en Place (orderly preparation, hygienic and sanitary handling of food items), presentation and professional serving methods and preparation were the predominant factors the judges focused on in gauging palatability which led them in determining the winner. After four long hours of creating dishes under time pressure, the competitors of the cooking challenge used their secret ingredients to bring the world to the judges and students, most of whom have not set foot outside the Philippines before. The Korean Cuisine Team, composed primarily of junior students, emerged as the Champion. They were followed by the Filipino Cuisine and French Cuisine repectively, both from the third year level as well. Gastronomia brings a lot of prestige; its an honor and a privilege to be the Champions. And it is also a preview of what we might experience in the real industry. At least there is a platform where we can apply the lessons we have learned in the four corners of our classrooms. said Samantha Nuyda, contestant. The winners will represent the FEU in the countrys premier culinary event, the Chefs on Parade (COP) on February 10-12, 2011 at the SMX Convention Center. The event was hosted by Leandro Carpio, Glenmor Sibal and Mark Labrador.

printing time and distribution, the new digital media can upload breaking news in a matter of seconds, he added. San Mateo also shared things about his company, Philippine Daily Inquirer; the countrys most widely read and circulated newspaper. With over 1.3 million nationwide readers daily, it enjoys a market share all over 50% and tops all readership surveys. Financial Wellness Seminar & Bank Card Seminar

By Caselyn Buenaventura It was another year for the Organization of Junior Finance Executives to handle a big event in collaboration with OSA and Bank of The Philippine Islands as part of the IABF week Celebration. The events were composed of two seminars and a caravan. The said event lasted for 1 week from November 22 to 26, 2010 at the Law Building Lap Room and F.E.U Pavilion. Its objective was to let the students of Far Eastern University have their own ATM accounts in helping them save money and make their enrollment faster and easier. The first event was called Picking the Right Card Seminar, which bank card suites you? happened last Nov. 22, 2010 at the F.E.U. Law Building Lap Room. Its target participants were first year Financial Management students because the organization wanted them to be knowledgeable of the different uses of cards and how to take good care of them. The students were given free ATM cards for their newly opened accounts. Guest speaker Cellina Betia from BPI, tackled about the different kinds of bank cards from ATM cards for savings down to the prepaid cards that can be bought and be given as give away this yuletide season. Betia pointed out that being a card holder means being responsible-- responsible in a way that they know when to spend and when to save. She also pointed out the total sum of money a person might acquire if he/she starts saving now. At the last part of the seminar, the BPI staffs gave students application forms for them to fill up so they can avail the free ATM cards; all they needed were their IDs. At the end of the day, everyone left the room with smiling faces and with a new responsibility they needed to face. The second event was Financial Wellness Seminar, which happened last November 23, 2010 at the same room. It was attended by different students from business economics to medical technology. The events guest speaker was Ralph Alo from BPI. The seminar focused on the importance of savings in ones life. According to Alo, the correct equation for a good saving habit is; INCOME SAVINGS = EXPENSES. He added that one should pay himself first so that he will not be a part of the 98% who are working because they need to after their retirement age but to be part of the 2% who are not working anymore and enjoy their retirement. He emphasized the power of self discipline and the importance of saving NOW, not tomorrow, because a person, who saves first, enjoys more especially in the future. Meanwhile, at the F.E.U pavilion, a caravan was opened where members of the BPI staff offered ATM CARDS to the whole student body from November 22-26, 2010 and everyone who opened accounts were given freebies like fans, I.D laces and mugs. BPI also provided a raffle where 10 lucky students received PHP 200.00 worth of Jollibee or Starbucks gift certificates. The whole week became stressful but it was worth the effort because the officers know they helped their co-Tamaraws not only to know how to save but to be disciplined and responsible as well.
