Tar Sands Refinery Map:
Seizing Opportunity & Avoiding Risk
This map was created so that you can address an
increasingly controversial part of your companys
transportation footprint. By identifying the reneries
that take feedstock from Canadas toxic Tar Sands, your
company is equipped to begin avoiding the Tar Sands and
the risks its fuel poses to your brand.
Many of the worlds most successful companies have
prospered because they have developed a strong culture of
problem-solving. Whether it be in the supply chain, in the
retail space, or in the transportation of goods and services,
the worlds most successful brands have met unique
challenges with ambition, innovation, and hard work.
Canadas Tar Sands:
The Worlds Dirtiest Oil
The largest corporate consumers are increasingly using
dirtier and riskier forms of transportation fuels. The Tar
Sands, concentrated in the Canadian province of
Alberta, combine these attributesdirty impacts and
high riskin alarming quantities. To produce just one
barrel of Tar Sands fuel, three barrels of freshwater
are consumed, and much of the resulting wastewater
is left in toxic lakes large enough to be seen from
outer space. Communities
downstream of Tar Sands
projects have experienced
elevated rates of rare
cancer. Tar Sands
extraction permanently
damages vast tracts
of Boreal Forest, and if
unchecked, potential
development could see
the ecological health of an
area the size of Florida
sacriced for the eeting
use of fuel. The Tar Sands
energy-intensive production
generates 3-5 times the
greenhouse gas emissions
of conventional oil
production.
Fuel from the Tar Sands carries greater costsin air,
water, and healththan fuel from conventional oil. These
costs are too much to bear for America and its largest
brands.
The Oil Industry:
[Y]oull have no way of knowing if its conventional or
oilsands because we dont put bar codes on our fuel and
theres not a single statewide gas pump that could
certify it doesnt come from oilsands. Unnamed

Saner minds will probably come to the realization that
they have no idea where the oil came from thats in that
plastic can in the gas station. Unnamed oil industry

The map youre holding in your hands provides a
powerful rebuke to the denial of the oil industry. Big oil
companies hope that America will continue to accept
not knowing where our fuel comes from.
Likewise, big oil companies hope that large companies
like yours will help to carry the risk of Tar Sands oil
productions environmental and social costs. Your

company did not agree to share these costs through
damage to its brand.
The industry thinks they can solve this problem with
PR. You can help solve this problem with action. This
map gives you the knowledge to protect your company
from the Tar Sands industrys problem.
Make sure Tar Sands reneries are not in your
companys footprint.
