SNL plummer block housings, series 2, 3, 5 and 6

SNL plummer (pillow) block housings up to size 32 are the most popular of the wide range of SKF housings. Because of their versatility it is seldom necessary to resort to tailored housings for specific applications. The housings are horizontally split and have two or four attachment bolt holes in the base as standard. Building block system The basis of the SNL plummer block housing system consists of a number of housings of the same design but in different sizes. By combining these housings with different standard seals a wide variety of housing variants, all belonging to the standard range, can be supplied (

fig). SNL plummer blocks can accommodate shaft diameters ranging from 20 to 160 mm. Reinforced base The housing base is reinforced with ribs and extra material surrounding the holes for the attachment bolts in order to improve seating on the base

plate ( fig). The attachment bolts can be preloaded to give better location and cannot deform the housing base or housing bore. Attachment SNL housings have two attachment bolt holes in the base as standard.

Large SNL plummer block housings

Large SNL plummer block housings ( fig) are the standard housings for shaft diameters from 115 mm and above. The housings are horizontally split and have four attachment bolt holes in the base. They have two eyebolts on the cap to facilitate handling. Choice of seals There is a choice of two standard seals for each housing and other special

Reinforced base The housing base is reinforced with ribs and extra material surrounding the four holes for the attachment bolts in order to improve seating on the base plate. The attachment bolts can be preloaded to give better location and cannot deform the housing base or housing bore (

fig). Good heat conduction The reinforcement of the housing base means that there is a considerable area of contact between the base and base plate making for improved

heat flow away from the bearing (

fig).

Relubrication facility The large SNL housings have three drilled and tapped holes that are plugged by metal screws. Two of the holes are in the housing cap (

fig) and one is in the side face. Two grease nipples with covers as well as one adapter with G 1/8 and G 1/4 threads are supplied with each housing. Dimples cast into the cap mark the positions for grease nipples if it is required to relubricate the seals. Space for sensor connections Flat areas offer space to accommodate sensors for condition monitoring (

fig). Housings with tapped holes can be supplied to order. Caps and bases individually marked The housing base and cap are matched during manufacture and are not interchangeable with those of other housings. To prevent mixing, the same consecutive number is marked on the cap and base of each

individual housing (

fig).

Easy mounting Cap bolts are easy to unscrew. Notches to pry the cap from the base ease cap removal. The rectangular base and centring marks that are vertical to

SONL plummer block housings

SONL plummer block housings ( fig) which replace the former SOFN housings, are intended for oil lubrication. These housings are designed for bearings operating at high speeds and at high temperatures. Primary applications include fans, flywheels and emergency power installations. If an SONL size is not available, an SOFN housing can be supplied instead. Check with SKF for availability. SONL plummer block housings were designed in accordance with customer requests using experience from SOFN and SNL housings. Advantages include: Effective seals In tough laboratory tests and real-life applications, the seals have proven extremely tight. The oil stays in and dirt is kept out of the housings. Superior bearing lubrication The housings have a deep reservoir that holds a large volume of oil enabling low oil temperatures and long service intervals. In addition, cooling elements to help control the oil bath temperature

are available ( fig). The inside oil pick-up ring provides an active flow in the housing (

SAF pillow (plummer) block housings

SAF pillow (plummer) blocks ( fig) are the SKF standard housings for inch shafts. Because of their versatility it is seldom necessary to resort to tailored housings for specific applications. They are typically supplied as kits together with a bearing and an adapter sleeve, but all parts are also available separately. The housings are horizontally split and have two or four bolt holes in the base, depending on the housing size. SAF housings are available in two designs. Housing sizes from 507 to 528 and 211 to 228 use a new casting design similar to SKF housings in the

SNL series (

Designed for long bearing service life SAF housings contribute to long bearing service life: A proper machined bearing seat provides a suitable fit together with the appropriate SKF bearing. Size and grade specific cap bolts offer superior clamping force between the cap and base.

 Effective seals protect the bearing from contamination and keep the lubricant in. Lubrication features enable frequent relubrication if necessary. Designed for demanding applications SAF housings are designed for heavy-duty operation in conveyors, mining, papermaking equipment as well as lighter duty and high speed service in fans, blowers and other applications: Flat surfaces on the cap accommodate condition monitoring attachments and other application specific fittings. A large choice of seals meet nearly all application requirements. Designed for easy mounting SAF housings ease installation: A flat square foot helps to accurately align the housing. Cast-in dimples locate dowel holes or vents during field installation. Dowels locate the cap and base for correct assembly. Pry slots make it easy to remove the cap for bearing installation and maintenance.
