Evidence-Based Programs
CWK has been designated an Effective Producer of programs by the U.S. Department of Education and appears on the U.S. Department of Educations What Works Clearinghouse List. Research shows that schools using CWK programs experienced: A decrease in physical and verbal aggressive behaviors among students; A decrease in the likelihood of students using drugs and alcohol; and, An increase in positive social and emotional behaviors among students. Connect with Kids draws upon the research-proven Mutual Aid Model of group work that allows students and adults to connect through the power of real-life stories and video. Video programs profile real kids navigating real issues in a relevant, reality-based format and have produced statistically significant improvement in student behavior A research study of more than 800 students in Kansas City showed that CWK programs improve student behavior across multiple character and life skills, including teasing and bullying behaviors, cheating and lying, respect for classmates and teachers, and academic perseverance. A nine-month study in Washington, D.C. schools showed a decrease in physical and verbal aggressive behaviors when CWK programs are used. In the control group, aggressive behaviors increased during the same time period. A two-year study at 18 New York City archdiocesan high schools showed that, in schools using CWK programs, students were less likely to use drugs, alcohol and tobacco and more likely to rely on effective strategies for refusing these substances.
CWK is a contracted vendor for professional development services with the New York City Department of Education, providing educator training, multimedia behavior management and parenting programs including but not limited to Coordinated Early Intervening Services (CEIS) funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). See-Feel-Change
What really motivates and encourages the education, the decision-making and the perseverance that kids need on the path to a thriving adult life? Business experts call it see-feel-change, an approach that fuels action by sparking emotion. Connect with Kids calls it educating the heart using the power of storytelling and peer-to-peer connections to empower students, parents and educators with the tools to create powerful, heart-felt associations. Research shows that students who emotionally connect with an experience are more likely to make life-long behavioral change than those that just received information about that experience. Video is an emotional medium and an excellent vehicle for allowing students to connect to the experience of another person. The Mutual Aid Model for Group Work
Connect with Kids multimedia resources also embrace the Mutual Aid Model for group work. This approach, developed by William Schwartz, emerged from the field of social work and has been expanded as an action research approach to implementing and sustaining change (Gitterman, 1989, 2004, 2005; Shulman, 1986, 2005). The Mutual Aid Model recognizes the power of ones peer group as a vehicle for solving common problems. The peer group provides a forum for trying out new behaviors; giving and receiving feedback; providing positive support; and, most important, learning to help and support others through the aid of a trusted adult. It takes advantage of the positive roles that peers can play in working together to find new solutions to old problems.
GRADES 3 - 5
Using the power of visual storytelling to create connections and educate the heart.
Student Video Series and Training Guide - Set of 5 DVDs including 1 DVD with 5 video shortcuts (two- to three-minute video segments) and four documentary-style, 22-minute DVDs (which can be viewed in five shorter segments) profiling real kids struggling with cruelty, conflict and bullying. Program titles include: Invisible Weapons, Silent Witness, Baby Bullies and Civil Wars covering issues including: Physical Bullying Bullying and Girls Relational Aggression The Silent Majority Cultural Cruelty and more. . . . Cyberbullying Student Workbook - Includes synopsis of video profiles, activities, self-reflection and discussion questions, and strategies for overcoming bullying and conflict resolution. Training DVD with Training Guide for teachers, counselors and parents DVD outlines the strategies and methodology for using the series to build a counter-culture of caring at school despite the culture of cruelty that kids experience in the outside world.
Strength in Numbers
Another potent force in Mutual Aid is the discovery that one is not alone in his or her thoughts, feelings, and emotions, sometimes referred to as the strength in numbers phenomenon. There is something special in hearing others articulate similar feelings and experiences. Allowing adolescents to support each other in their struggles is developmentally appropriate and makes use of the power of the peer group. Such mutuality produces support that energizes learning and provides the impetus that can ultimately change behaviors, develop life skills and lead to academic and lifelong personal achievement.
