The original Ultimate Detailing Machine

Our Porter Cable 7424 Ultimate Detailing Machine incorporates a random, swirl-free polishing action that will not scratch or burn the paint or clear coat. An electronic variable speed control allows you to adjust the speed from 2,500 to 6,000 OPM. A heavy duty, 3.7 amp motor supplies plenty of torque and the machine is double insulated against shock. The hand grip can be screwed into either side making the polisher adaptable for right or left handed operators. We supply this polisher with a professional, Flexible 6 inch Hook and Loop Backing Plate for quick pad changes and one Closed Cell Structure, Constant Pressure, 6-1/2 inch, White Polishing Pad for general polishing and waxing. These do not come with the basic machine from Porter Cable. This polisher is classified as a dual-action polisher. It is designed to safely apply polish and wax in a manner similar to hand application. In minutes, it creates a mirror-like finish and shine that would otherwise take hours of hand labor. It will not create swirls or remove your car's clear coat finish. The pad does not rotate in the conventional sense, it oscillates. This "jiggling" occurs at such a high rate that the eye can not see any pad movement. This polisher is not designed for heavy compounding and may not fully remove scratches, deep swirls or paint imperfections.

Hi-gloss, 6-1/2 inch, CCS, Foam Polishing Pads

These are the latest generation of foam polishing pads from Lake Country MFG. They incorporate a patented technology called CCS, Collapsed Cell Structures. This technology puts a pattern of collapsed "dimples" on the surface of the pad to slow the rate of polish absorption, gradually releasing polish as needed by the operator. CCS Pockets reduce surface tension, prevent pad skipping and allow the operator to run the pad flat on the working surface.

Our CCS Pads feature two, additional, design innovations. First, they incorporate the latest, Constant Pressure technology. Polishing requires you to keep a uniform and constant pressure on the surface being polished. Tilting the machine in any direction can result in an uneven and excessive pressure being transferred to the painted surface. Constant Pressure technology uses a layer of engineered, instant rebound foam between the pad and the backing plate to absorb off-axis movements while keeping the pressure of the pad on the surface constant. The other patented, innovation incorporated in CCS Pads are a curved outer edge. The curvature on the outer edge of the pad allows easy transitions over seams and inclines. Standard CCS pads are flat-cut. We pay extra to have the top edge rounded over because it prevents pads from snagging while polishing seams and edges. We also pay attention to the back of the pad. Standard CCS pads run the Hook and Backing material to the edge of the pad. This material is very course and can cause scratching if it hits the paint while working in tight spaces or around mirrors and wings. We cut the Velcro brand fastening material back 3/8 inch from the edge. This allows you to work right against corners, mirrors, wings and complex angles without fear of scratching the paintwork.

A Hook-and-Loop Backing Plate is Required: All of our 6-1/2 inch pads have a VELCRO brand loop backing that requires your machine be fitted with a Hook-and-Loop Backing Plate. Special Foam Pads

Orange, CCS, Power Pad: Developed in Germany for a leading automaker, this unique foam offers the cutting power of a compounding foam and the gloss enhancing characteristics of a polishing foam. When used with the proper polishing compounds, this orange pad removes 2000 grit sanding traces, swirls and paint defects with minimal or no surface dullness. This pad creates so little haze that you can often go from compounding right to finishing without the intermediate polishing steps. Where polishing is still required (often on black and red cars), it can be accomplished in a fraction of the time it would take with standard pads. The Power Pad gives enthusiasts the ability to remove swirls, water spots and fine scratches without spending hours polishing out surface haze! Green, CCS, German Polishing Pad: This green, urethane foam was selected by Mercedes Benz, Germany for polishing the new, scratch resistant clear coats. This is a high strength foam with 60 pores per sq. inch yet is softer, more forgiving and produces less spot heating than our regular foams which have 80 pores per sq. inch. This means it can remove minor swirls yet leaves a smooth, haze-free finish. It is designed to be used with a dual-action polisher (like the Porter Cable 7424) but can be used with a circular polisher if the speed is kept around 1000 rpm. This green pad was originally made for German clear coats but we've found it to work equally as well on the current, harder, domestic clear coats being made by PPG and DuPont. On conventional clear coats, we recommend using this pad with BLACKFIRE Gloss Enhancing Polish. On the new, scratch-resistant clear coats, we recommend using this pad with BLACKFIRE Scratch Resistant Clear Finishing Polish and BLACKFIRE Scratch Resistant Clear Compound. This pad is also recommended for applying one-step, cleaner/sealants like Klasse All-In-One and Menzerna Onestep, Acrylic Jacket. In aggressiveness, it has about 20% more "cut" or polishing power than our White Polishing Pads but less than our Orange Power Pads. Power Pad Clay Applicator: This pad allows you to use your Porter Cable 7424 machine polisher and 4 oz. of clay (use 1/2 of a BLACKFIRE PolyClay) to quickly and easily remove surface contamination and create a smooth-as-glass finish.

How to use the Power Pad Clay Applicator:

Use 4 oz. of clay (1/2 of a BLACKFIRE PolyClay bar), form it into a round patty and place it in the center of the pad. The clay should rest slightly below the top surface of the pad. Mist the entire pad, including the clay, with a clay lubricant. Place the pad on the surface and turn the machine on. Work over a 2 ft. by 2 ft. area using an up and down and back and forth motion. Lightly mist lubricant on the pad or on the surface as needed to allow the clay to move freely. After several passes, release the pressure on the pad and go over the area one last time allowing just the foam to contact the surface. Wipe off residues with a dry Microfiber cloth. This pad requires your Porter Cable 7424 be fitted with a 6 inch Hook-and-Loop Backing Plate. (Backing plate and clay bar not included with the pad)

4 inch, CCS, Spot Repair Pads: One of the secrets to successful machine polishing is knowing both what type of foam pad to use and what size pad to use. I find the optimum size for whole panel (i.e. hood, trunk, fender, etc.) polishing is 6.5 to 7.5 inches. If I'm working on a specific blemish or paint defect, I prefer working with a 4 inch pad. This pad size allows me to focus on just the problem area and not affect the surrounding paint. We offer three different spot repair pads: Orange CCS Power Pad Jr. Removes 2000 grit swirls, scratches and paint defects with minimal or no surface dullness. Professional Circular Polishers

The Makita 9227 is a serious rotary polisher for the skilled enthusiast or professional detailer. Best backing plates for circular polishers

These Flexible Backing Plates feature a 5/8 x 11 threaded insert to fit professional circular polishers. These will not fit dual-action machines like the Porter Cable 7424. The VELCRO brand fastening material allows quick and easy pad changing and is molded into the plate eliminating delamination. The flexible edge reduces spontaneous heat build-up when transitioning from flat to contoured surfaces. Never use a backing plate that is larger than the foam pad or disc.

The DW849 has an 8 amp motor vs. the Makita's 10 amp unit but it weighs nearly two pounds more. Much of this extra weight is attributable to the DeWalt's all ball-bearing motor assembly and heat-tempered, precision-cut gears. This gives the DeWalt a feel of solid, controlled power. A Two Mode Polisher

For those of you new to machine polishers, there are two basic categories, dual-action and circular. With dual-action (also called orbital) machines, the pads do not rotate. They oscillate or "jiggle" in a random pattern. This random motion means the machine can not put swirls in the finish. This motion is also ideally suited for applying waxes and sealants. Because D-A machines are not designed to "cut" or remove paint, they may not be able to fully remove swirls or scratches. Circular polishers, the kind used by body shops, are designed to "cut" or remove paint. They can abrade away the surface completely eliminating swirls, scratches and paint defects. Unfortunately, in inexperienced hands, circular polishers can burn through the paint right down to bare metal. Their higher speeds also make them unacceptable for applying most waxes and sealants. The Makita BO6040 Two Mode Polisher is two machines in one. It has an orange knob on the left side of the machine which switches it from a random orbital motion to a forced, cutting motion! Wool Compounding Pads

Wool pads are custom crafted for specific tasks by carefully selecting the grade of wool, length of cut, twist and blend of auxiliary fibers. The pads listed below are specifically made for compounding and leveling automotive finishes and should only be used with circular machine polishers.

6 inch, Prewashed, White, Knit Lambswool Pad.

Mild cut for fresh paint. Use with a 6 inch backing plate like our FBP-6C. While this backing plate has a centering plug, it will not affect the pads performance. This pad is widely used by automakers and by body shops nationwide. This is a disposable pad. When the pad starts to cake with compound residues it can be refreshed three or four times with a stainless steel brush. When the pad becomes so matted that brushing does not restore the knap, discard the pad. This is the lightest cut of all our wool pads and is the only wool pad we recommend for use on fresh paint.

Hi-gloss, 7-1/2 inch, CCS, Foam Polishing Pads

These 7-1/2 inch, CCS, Polishing Pads were specifically developed to polish the new, harder, scratch-resistant clear coats but can also be used on conventional clear coats and single stage paints. CCS (Collapsed Cell Structures) technology puts a pattern of collapsed "dimples" on the surface of the pad to slow the rate of polish absorption, gradually releasing polish as needed by the operator. CCS Pockets reduce surface tension, prevent pad skipping and allow the operator to run the pad flat on the working surface. These pads can be used with dual-action polishers like the Porter Cable 7424 and professional, circular machine polishers. These 7.5 inch, CCS Pads continue to incorporate the latest, Constant Pressure technology which uses a layer of engineered, instant rebound foam between the pad and the backing plate to absorb off-axis movements while keeping the pressure of the pad on the surface constant. They also feature a curved "mushroom cap" design to allow easy transitions over seams and inclines. The perfect tire dressing?
