Greetings from Disabled Peoples International Asia Pacific (DPI/AP). This is an email update featuring developments in the field of disability, developments concerning social justice and news from around the world. Because of the importance of social justice as a basis for our work, we added this as topic into our newsletter.

A) Developments in the field of disability


1. International Disability Film Festival The Abra International Film Festival took place from 20th 23rd of October 2011. It is an international cinema, by, with and about people with disabilities. Abra is Ireland's first ever International Disability Film Festival. The aim of the festival is to celebrate progress made by people with disabilities while increasing awareness and understanding of the many challenges still faced by people with disabilities around the world. Please read more. 2. Global Summit on Mobile Applications and Services for Seniors and Persons with Disabilities This conference will be held from the 5th 6th of December in Washington, DC. The M-Enabling Summit, Global Summit and Showcase for Mobile Applications and Services for Seniors and Persons with Disabilities, is the first global program solely dedicated to participants in the emerging ecosystem for mobile accessible and assistive technologies, applications and services. Unlike any other conference or exposition, the M-Enabling Summit brings together all facets of the industry. Key stakeholders from across the globe that develop, market, create policy, and deploy the initiatives that are setting new frontiers for Mobile Accessible and Assistive Solutions will be in attendance. 3. Tougher rules for sex crimes on disabled This is a report about sexual crimes on persons with disabilities. They said that sexual crimes on the disabled will be prosecuted with or without the victims complaints and first-time offenders will be bound to wear electronic tagging devices under toughened rules unveiled by the government. Please read more. 4. Art Exhibition: Framing Gravity This is the title of this years AART.BOXX exhibition. It has been drawn from the wide-ranging creative and material concerns offered by selected artists as well as the social frame of disability in which the exhibition is set. The exhibition features artists working across a range of mediums including spoken word, works on paper, textiles, video and sculpture. Please follow link.

B) Developments concerning social justice


1. Petition to Make Phnom Penh an Eviction Free Zone They said that over the past two decades they have seen more than ten percent of the city's inhabitants displaced from their homes. As land prices have soared, more than 150,000 people have found themselves without a home, many of them coerced and intimidated into leaving, others traumatized by having watched their homes and belongings destroyed by excavators. In the end they said forced evictions are a violation of human rights. Please follow link. 2. Cost of Disability in Marriage This is an article about women who are going to be married. They said that for most women, marriage is the highest watermark of their lives, the crowning glory that sets the stage for a wonderful, sustaining and lifelong commitment. It is a uniquely fulfilling experience, the culmination of sustained training and socialization in the home, the school, and all manner of social settings to make the girl child fit for this very important role. Non-paper by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights You can find the link for the non-paper prepared by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights on the challenges in funding urgent mandates established by the Council. This non-paper is shared for information in view of the President's visit to New York from 1-2 November to present the annual report of the Council to the General Assembly and the forthcoming consideration by the General Assembly of the financial implications of Council resolutions and decisions. 4. World Congress on Human Trafficking and Forced Labour 2011 This is an Invitation to the World Congress on Human Trafficking and Forced Labour 2011. The theme of this conference is: Combating Human And Sex Trafficking Worldwide. This topic not only invites us to reflect upon the basic and classical criminological ideas from a contemporary perspective, but also proposes to discuss their current transformation, modification, and new developments.
