Purpose of testing

1 Briefly discuss the concept “grade inflation”.

This is the inclination for teachers to assign higher grades

today than in the past. This type of grading is not a reliable
type of grading.

2 What is an aptitude test battery?

It is a serious or collection of tests (set of questions) that is

used to test where the students interests are and which
interests stand out more then others based on the score the
learner achieve (high score indicate high interest) the learner
are then informed which career path to follow and which skills
they would be able to develop best.

3 Briefly discuss the types of educational decisions every

classroom teacher must make.

“The following three types of educational decisions are the

decisions that all classroom teachers must make:

3.1 Instructional Decisions (nuts-and-blots types of decisions)

These are the most frequently made decisions in education

and are the instructions that build the instructional plan which
can be best interpreted by looking at the “7 Steps to learning”
described in

Madeline Hunters “Methods of teaching.”

Getting students set to learn

• Step 1: Review
• Step 2: Anticipatory Set
• Step 3: Objective

Instruction

• Step 4: Input and Modeling

Checking for understanding

• Step 5: Checking Understanding

• Step 6: Guided Practice

Independent practice

• Step 7: Independent Practice

3.2 Grading Decisions

The teacher often considers test scores and other data (based
on performance and knowledge) in making decisions about
who gets A’s and B’s or who fails or passes.

3.3 Diagnostic Decisions

These are decisions made about a student’s strengths and

weaknesses and the reason or reasons for them.

Information for diagnostic decision making can be acquired by:

• An informal teacher made test

• Standardized test

4. Briefly discuss the type of data that is needed for

diagnostic decisions.

Objective test data should always be used along with the

teacher’s subjective judgment to make such decisions

Norm and criterion referenced tests

1 Briefly discuss the educational decisions for which you

would want to use norm referenced test.

2 Briefly discuss the educational decisions for which you

would want to use criterion referenced test.
