Women tend to be more aware of their emotions, show more empathy and are adept interpersonally.
Men tend to be more self-confident and optimistic, adapt more easily, and handle stress better. However, on the whole, men and women are generally equal in total emotional intelligence.

Charles Darwin in his work On the Origin of Species in 1859 postulated that all species needed emotions to survive.

1990 Peter Salovey and John Mayer coined the word Emotional Intelligence
1994 Dr Antonio Damasio Pioneering work in linking Human Brain and emotions and feelings. Emotion, Reason and Human Brain 1995 - Daniel Goleman published Emotional Intelligence subsequently Social Intelligence. Currently lot of work is being done on understanding how emotions, feelings influence social behaviour.
