The Jacksonville Veterans Day parade will be held this year on Nov. 5. The FRO has scheduled another Jump-N-Jax potluck dinner on Nov. 14, and just around the corner, on Dec. 1, is the CLR-27 Holiday Party. Be sure to take advantage of fall festivals, hay rides, pumpkin farms, arts and crafts fairs, and if you are planning on driving a long distance for Thanksgiving, drive safely. Whats Gods name and rank? Her mother replied, His name is Almighty and hes a General. From that day on, little Virginia Puller began her prayers, General God Almighty . . . Similar prayers are seeing us through this war and the hard economic times. Sledges book is probably one of the best personal histories of war. It is clear he was proud to be a Marine, but he doesnt glamorize war or the fact that the enemy needs killing. He carried a pocket New Testament with him throughout the war. Early in the hard fighting on Peleliu, his company XO and a Staff NCO were chatting with him on the edge of his fighting hole, when he heard clearly, You will survive the war. He looked quizzically at them and asked, Did you hear that? They were confused. God had spoken to him that day and told him hed survive the war. Despite the dangerous fights he was in, he never forgot that promise from God and survived the war, and, as God told him, became a college professor, husband, father and grandfather. In war, a persons faith is often tested and in a few cases, lost; but what is truly amazing is how, for many, ones faith is strengthened and grows while deployed to combat. Im not talking about merely attending worship services or programs, but an awareness of ones spiritual need for a deeper personal relationship with God. The issue of life and death that underlies all war sharpens the focus and awareness of people to their spiritual and religious needs. Just as combat can give one a heightened appreciation for life it can also give one a sharpened grasp of their mortality and need for having ones life in order with God as one Marine from an Infantry Battalion I baptized during this deployment said, I want to be right with God. Puller and Sledge understood this phenomenon and grasped that their religious beliefs did not make them weaker or less successful in combat; on the contrary, they drew strength from their faith, and it gave them the ability to persevere in battle. What is true in battle is also true in peace ones faith makes them stronger, and when there are no easy answers for lifes trials, faith in God gives strength to press on. ~ Chaps

Taking my brilliant wifes advice, I purchased a Kindle and have enjoyed it thoroughly. As a reader, its been a godsend. Two USMC legendary heroes Ive enjoyed reading about were Chesty: The Story of Lieutenant General Lewis B. Puller, USMC by Jon T. Hoffman (LtCol, USMC Ret) and E.B. Sledgehammer Sledges With the Old Breed: at Peleliu and Okinawa, his personal history of the war in the Pacific (HBO used it as one of the sources for its series, The Pacific). Like many of the WWII books Ive read, one thing that impressed me about both Marines was how much religion and God played in their lives as in many warriors today. Chesty Puller is a legend in the Corps, but how many Marines know he was a Christian? This faith comes through in letters to his wife, Virginia. While in the Pacific, he and Virginia maintained a letter writing campaign that was as amazing as Chestys combat record. One story Chesty loved was when his daughter, also named Virginia, was three and asked her mom,

October has been one of the fastest months during this deployment for HQSVC Co, 2d MLG(Fwd). Even with our operations being at a high tempo, these Warriors of the 2d MLG (Fwd) have been nothing short of excellent by supporting and maintaining the warfighters with selfless service in a professional manner. Holiday spirit is in the air, as sections decorated their areas for Halloween and the upcoming holidays. In October, 2d MLG (Fwd) hosted its 1st Iron Man and Iron Woman competition aboard Camp Leatherneck with over 130 participants from all services and units. HQSVC Company super achievers included: Overall Male Winner - Cpl Joshua McGirl (LS Det); 2nd Place, Female Category - Sarah Bergstrom (G-3); Furthest Thrown Shot Put (54 feet) - 1stLt Stephen Nemeth (Staff Sec); Most Crunches Performed in 2 minutes (180) - SSgt Edwards (G-3); and Most Weight Bench-Pressed (405 lbs) - Sgt Daniel Guilliams (PSD). Several Marines were recognized for awards and meritorious promotions: SSgt Brown received his Navy League Award for his hard work and accomplishments while in support of OEF. At the company level, Cpl Tyler Dosch (G-6) was Noncommissioned Officer of the Quarter, and LCpl Dale Staton (S-4) was Marine of the Quarter. At the group level, Cpl Justin Salerno won Combat Meritorious Sergeant, Cpl Jennifer Chitwood won Meritorious Sergeant, and LCpl Dale Staton won Meritorious Corporal. These three Marines will be promoted on 2 November. Congratulations to all these Warriors on their hard work and dedication. We also have a new addition to the 2d MLG family from last month: Xavier Cross Sanchez, son of SSgt Jose and Florinda Sanchez (Disbo Det.), born on 10 September. Congratulations to the family, and we would like to welcome our new baby devil pup to the family.

Greetings! Thanks to all who participated in our Halloween Hayride at Mikes Farm on Oct. 29! We gave out lots of goodies, had lots of fun, and the costume contest had some very competitive entries everyone was truly a winner. If you were not able to join us, then I encourage you to join us at Jump-N-Jax on Nov. and our great Holiday Party on Dec. 1. I wrote an article for our CLR-27 Newsletter where I spoke about Marine On-Line and eMarine. If you have any questions about this new mass communication tool, let me know, and well get it out to you. So the Holiday Season approaches, and we get ready to bid 2011 farewell. I hope each of you is getting ready for the cooler days and enjoying the many associated activities. As you prepare for and enjoy the holidays, please do so safely. Veterans Day is also around the corner, so I ask that you take a moment to reflect on the many sacrifices our veterans have made and continue to make on our behalf and that you thank as many of them as you can for their contributions.

NACRRA USMC DEPLOYMENT RESPITE CARE PROGRAM In response to the Global War on Terrorism, the Onslow County Partnership for Children (OCPC) has contracted with the National Association of Childcare Resource and Referral Agencies (NACRRA) to provide respite care services. Military families who have a deployed family member and are affiliated with Camp Lejeune, New River Air Station and Cherry Point Air Station are eligible for up to 16 hours per month of free child care. FREE Child Care for MCFTB events If you have not done so, please register your children in order to take advantage of the FREE childcare. To utilize the FREE childcare services provided by the Brewster Childcare Development Center (CDC) during MCFTB training or CDC-supported unit functions, you must register your children at the CDC & Youth Pavilion located at Midway Park. The CDC provides childcare for registered children between the ages of six-weeks-old and up to 12years-old. Prior to events, parents must call 4508467 to make their reservations as soon as possible but at least 72 hours in advance. Origins of the American Thanksgiving, 1600s The pilgrims and Wampanoag Native Americans decided to celebrate their successful harvest. They used this holiday to be thankful for what they had in their lives, and they worked together to prepare the meal, which consisted of Duck, Deer, Seafood, Cabbage, Onions, Corn, Fruits, Nuts, and Squash.

Q: What is the composition of 2d MLG (Fwd)? A: It is comprised of Headquarters and Service Company [HQSVC Company (Forward)], two Combat Logistics Battalions, an Engineer Support Battalion, MAGTF Support Battalion (elements of Dental, Maintenance, Medical, and Supply Battalion), and an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Company. Each battalion has its own FRO. HQSVC Company (Forward)'s FRO is not only our company FRO, but he is also CLR-27's FRO. Q: I would like to receive email updates from HQSVC Company, 2d MLG (Fwd) FRO while my Marine or Sailor is deployed. How can I get added to the distribution list?
