GEOGRAPHY LESSON PLAN Nurizatul Aziah Bte Hj Kamaruddin

Date: 5th November 2011 (Saturday) No. of students: 20 students Main Topic:
River and coast

Period: 10.10 am 11.00 am

Class: Year 9B Ability: Mixed-ability

Room: ICT Lab

Sub Topic:
Types of Waves and Coastal Processes

Lessons Aims: To define the meaning of types of waves and explain the different between constructive and destructive waves. To teach students about coastal processes; types of coastal processes. To teach students about coastal erosional processes and explain each of them. To teach students about the factors influencing the rate of erosion Learning Objectives: (at the end of the lesson, students should be able to): Define and classify the meaning of constructive waves, and destructive waves. List the three types of coastal processes. List the four types of coastal erosional processes. Explain how the four coastal erosional processes take place or occurs. Explain the factors influencing the rate of erosion. Teaching aids: Computers for students Laptop and projector PowerPoint References: Interactive Geography 3 Internet resources Time Teaching Strategies Student Activity (min)
Recall previous lesson and ask questions to check students understanding.

Introduction

About 3 min

Ask students: Some terms that they have learned Right answers are given after each student give his/her answer Start the content of the lesson, by asking students to surf into their blog and ask them to click on the lesson 2 links. Teacher showing students what they are going to learn through by using slideshare in the blog: Types of waves

Students try to answer questions correctly.

Coastal Processes Factors influencing the rate of erosion

Show students a mind map of types of waves: Constructive waves Destructive waves Explain the different characteristics between constructive waves and destructive waves to students by showing animation that have been link in the blog. Ask students to click on the link for the animation of destructive and constructive waves. Ask students to go back to the slideshare and then show students a mind map of coastal processes: Erosion Transportation Deposition

Students will study the animation and try to understand the different characteristics between constructive and destructive waves.

About 8 10 min

Show students a mind map of coastal erosional processes: Corrasion/abrasion Attrition Solution/corrosion Hydraulic action Emphasize the easy techniques to remember the erosional processes are CASH. Also, tell students that the coastal erosional processes are merely same with the processes of river erosion, but the difference is, instead of against river bed and bank, replace it with against the cliff face or coast and instead of river water, replace it with sea waves Explain to students how corrosion/abrasion occurs by showing the animation of it. Ask students to click on the link for the animation of the coastal erosional processes in the blog. Then ask them to click on the abrasion part. As they click on the abrasion part, the animation will be play. Explain to students how attrition occurs by showing the animation of it. Ask students to click on the attrition part in the

Students learn to easy techniques to remember the coastal erosional processes. Students also try to understand the connection between coastal erosional processes and the processes of river erosion. Students try to understand how corrosion/abrasion occur and will study the animation of the abrasion.

animation of the coastal erosional processes that they have click previously. Explain to students how solution occurs by showing the animation of it. Ask students to click on the solution part in the animation of the coastal erosional processes that they have click previously. Explain to students how hydraulic action occurs by showing the animation of it. Ask students to click on the hydraulic action part in the animation of the coastal erosional processes that they have click previously. Show students a mind map of factors influencing the rate of erosion: Type of wave Nature of coastal rocks The gradient of the coast Impact of human activities Explain to students how type of wave can influence the rate of erosion. Students try to understand how solution occur and will study the animation of the solution.

Students try to understand how hydraulic action occur and will study the animation of the hydraulic action.

Class activity

About 5 min

Ask students to click on the link for the 1st quiz (match-up quiz) in the blog and ask them to compete with each other by using computer in the lab for each student. The marks will be calculated right after they have done with the quiz. Then ask students to click on the link for the 2nd quiz (Multiple choice quiz) in the blog and ask

them again to compete with each other by using computer in the lab for each student. The marks will also be calculated right after they have done with the quiz.

Closure

To conclude the lesson, recall, summarize and ask students what they have learned for today. Ask students to download notes for todays lesson from the blog.

Students try to remember what they have learned.
