closets, so the three closet makeovers in this issue will inspire you to get your project going.
In many areas of the country January and February can be a little gray, so our designers

1. Collect an assortment of shoe boxes in various
sizes. Using wallpaper of your choice and masking
tape, wrap each box and lid separately like you would
wrap a gift.
2. Choose decorative knobs that complement your
selected wallpaper patterns. A variety of knobs can
be found in the hardware department at Lowe’s.
3. Remove the included bolt from each knob. On
an end panel of the shoe box, center the knob low
enough to allow space for the lid. Using scissors,
puncture a hole, and push the knob through it.
4. To secure, reattach the bolt to the knob from
the inside of the box. If needed, further secure the
knobs using a hot-glue gun.

punch two holes into a 1-quart paint

a handle, knotting the ends of the
twine to secure it.
3. Fill the container with fresh or
dried flowers, and hang from a
doorknob or decorative hook.
4. Repeat these steps to create

Create shapes from copper tubing

to add interest in any room.
1. Gently bend and stretch a length of lightweight
copper tubing (#43498) into a shape that suits your
wallspace. Avoid creating sharp corners, which will
cause the tubing to weaken and break.
2. Hold the tubing against the wall, and determine
the locations for securing. Screw 11⁄4-inch cup hooks
into the wall at these places, and then slide the
tubing into each hook.

This closet was beginning to feel more

like a storage locker than a shared dress-
ing space—with scarves, belts, neckties,
and handbags spilling from the shelves.
The couple needed a system that would
put accessories and apparel in plain sight
and easy reach, plus a subtle division be-

Universal design is about products that are more comfortable to use and environments
that make life easier for as many individuals as possible, regardless of age or ability. Not
long ago, the perception of universal design was that style succumbed to accessibility.
Today, there are more and more universally designed products available in the latest

Lowe’s and Ohio State University have teamed up to tell
the story of universal design. In 2006, they partnered to build
a universally designed kitchen exhibit at the university’s Farm
Science Review. The exhibit was toured by thousands of
people, including the general public as well as interior design
students from several colleges, and Lowe’s received thousands
of letters from the readers of Lowe’s Creative Ideas for Home
and Garden, eager to learn more about universal design.
Because of that success and a commitment to this principle,
the two decided to build a universally designed bath at the
Farm Science Review for 2007.
“We’re very excited about this opportunity to get the word
out about universal design,” says Melissa Birdsong, Lowe’s
Vice President of Trend, Design & Brand. “We hope even
more people will learn how easy it can be to make a home
accessible for all—and make it look fabulous as well.”

Lowe’s Heroes
Lowe’s employees in the Greater Dallas area help improve
local Boys and Girls Clubs during a summerlong project.
All children need a safe place to
learn and grow.Thanks to hundreds of
Lowe’s employees, 10 facilities can provide
that environment.
During the 2006 Lowe’s Heroes
project, 33 stores in Dallas and
Fort Worth,Texas, teamed up
to renovate local Boys and
Girls Clubs for youngsters
between the ages of 6 and
18.The clubs provide youth
programs and activities for those
who cannot afford, or may lack
access to, other community programs.
To begin the project, site assessments of
the Boys and Girls Clubs were conducted
to identify their needs.“In general, fund-
ing was desperately needed to improve
the aesthetics, safety, and overall standards
of these facilities,” explains Jack Fuller, the
North Dallas store manager.“They simply

were not conducive to the kids’ learning
and development.” Improvements for the
clubs included painting, lighting and wall
repair, safety upgrades, and basic remod-
eling and landscaping.
The project that Jack found
the most touching was the
renovation of an Olympic-
size swimming pool, which
would have been shut down
if the Lowe’s Heroes program
had not intervened.“Restor-
ing this pool will impact a large
number of kids for many years,” Jack says.
“There are 40 or 50 examples just like that
pool—where the overall impact just can’t
be measured.”
Most of the work took place during the
summer of 2006.“We had more than 300
employees give their time—over 7,000
hours of skilled labor—for this project,”
Volunteers in the Lowe’s
Heroes program renovated
several Boys and Girls Clubs
to provide better facilities for
kids’ activities and enrichment.
Jack says.“The Boys and Girls Clubs of
Greater Dallas were also awarded a $25,000
grant from Lowe’s Charitable and Edu-
cational Foundation to purchase project
supplies for the facility renovations.”
Project completion coincided with the
clubs’ annual registration. Lowe’s sponsored
a grand reopening event on August 15 at
the Oak Cliff location in southern Dallas.
Jack describes the celebration as having a
“festival atmosphere for the children, [in-
cluding] face painting, kids’ clinics, bounce
houses, as well as food and refreshments,
all free of charge.”
Lowe’s Heroes is an annual company-
wide initiative in which Lowe’s employees
conduct volunteer projects to help their
communities and neighborhoods become
