Call for Participation in Tomorrow’s Nationwide Peaceful Student Protest!

It is true! Students from all over Pakistan, America and Europe are protesting against the martial law on 30th
November. In Lahore, the protest will begin at 2:30 pm from the Salt & Pepper, Liberty Market.

Participating institutions: GCU, Punjab University, FAST, LUMS, SKANS, FC College, BNU, TILS, UCL, NCA,
KE Medical College, UET, LSE, PAC, UMT.

Other cities where protests will be held include Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Quetta, Faisalabad,
Multan, Peshawar, London, Paris, Geneva, Washington, New York, Boston, Montreal, Toronto etc.

We, at FASTRising and the Students Action Committee, urge YOU, students, alumni, faculty and staff
members of FAST-NU, Lahore to participate in tomorrow’s demonstration to protest against the death
of Pakistan and the death of Pakistanis. Let us participate to affirm our responsibility towards
ourselves, towards each other, towards our country and its people.

Ten Reasons to Create Your own FASTRising Splinter Group

1. To maintain and develop diversity of opinions (socialist, centrist, pro-right) within student
activism
2. To increase diversity of tactics – e.g. one group could specialize in pamphleteering, another in
writing newsletters, yet another in blog management, another in coordination with other
groups…
3. To avoid letting a few (hyperactive) persons become representative of an entire people – e.g.,
Maulana Fazul-ur-Rehman as the symbol of the MMA, Altaf Hussain as the sole spokesman of
the Mohajirs, etc.
4. To make detection hard, and almost impossible to wipe out all groups – a few blows will take
care of a tree (unified command structure), not so with a field of weeds (splinters).
5. Regeneration is always possible as long as one splinter remains operational – e.g. the secret
organization of Algerian FLN rebels against the French colonialists
6. To explore how groupwork force an individual to always go beyond his/her perceived capacities
– become a stronger, wiser, more creative individual through collective effort!

Five Issues that Decentralized Groups Should Deal With

1. Coupling – How to minimize interdependence between groups to work with minimum inter-
group communication and usage of resources?
2. Cohesion – How to work together, within a group and with other groups, optimally?
3. Synchronization – How can groups work as a single entity if circumstance demands?
4. Task distribution – How can groups divide different tasks among themselves and in themselves?
5. Bottlenecks and Plan B’s – How can groups identify agents or tasks that waste most time or
resources and how can groups overcome such bottleneck with alternative strategies?
