Answer all questions. Please note that answers written in pencil are not eligible for re-grading This exam counts 12.5% of your course grade Write answers in the spaces provided A Chemistry Data sheet is provided Please note that whenever you do your calculations, make sure to: 1. Show all your steps one at a time (i.e. showing how the calculation was done) 2. Give the correct significant figures 3. Give a suitable unit for the answer Question Maximum Marks Number marks obtained 1 11 2 3 4 Total 4 11 15 41

Please note that: One of the most common complaints from students about practice exam papers is: It is easier than that of the real exam. This is because questions in this paper were taken from a collection of previous exams in the U of A and different university colleges which I taught. The goal of this paper is to let you know the format of my exams so that you can be prepared for the upcoming mid-term exam. Please be aware that each exam is unique and is tailored for a specific class and so the level of difficulty of the exam may be different from that of yours. Especially, you need to know that the U of A is different from other university colleges. You also need to know that writing an exam at home is very different from writing it in an examination hall. Answer key for this practice exam will be provided soon.

1 a) The following is a list of different molecular species. Rank them according to the order of increasing radius. Rb+, Se2-, Sr2+, Br-, As3[3 marks]

Order of increasing radius Smallest radius Largest radius

b)

The following are three covalent compounds: ZnF2 BH3 CrCl3

Classify the compounds as ionic, polar covalent or non-polar covalent. Show your calculations. [6 marks] ZnF2 __________________________________ Calculations:

BH3 ____________________________________ Calculations:

CrCl3___________________________________ Calculations: c) For the following compounds, provide names or formulas by filling the space below: [2 marks] Name Silver carbonate Fe2S3 Magnesium phosphate NCl3 Formula

2 a) A CHEM 10X student proposed the following Lewis structures for sulfur trioxide with a molecular formula of SO3
O O S O (A) O O S O (B) O O S O (C)

(i) Mark on the drawings for those atoms which carry formal charges.

[2 marks]

(ii) Which of the above is the best Lewis structure? Briefly explain your choice. [2 mark]

a) For the following given compound, draw its best Lewis structure and three dimensional structures, name their molecular geometries and the type of hybridization of the central atom. State whether it carries a net dipole moment. [6 marks] Molecular formula Best Lewis Structure Three dimensional structure Molecular geometry Net dipole moment Yes / no

NSiF

b)

(i)

Draw the best Lewis structure for phosphate ion, PO43- below. Make sure to write the lone pair of electrons and formal charges in your drawing. [2 marks]

(ii)

Draw all resonance structures for phosphate ion below: [3 marks]

4 a) The plot below shows the potential energy of two chlorine atoms as a function of the distance between them.

Energy

A C

Distance [1 mark]

(i) Why does the energy decrease as shown in A?

(ii) Why does the energy increase as shown in B?

[1 mark]

(iii)

What happens to the two chlorine atoms at point C of the plot?

[1 mark]

(i)

What is the distance corresponds to point C?

[1 mark]

(ii)

Indicate in the diagram the bond energy of the chlorine molecule.

[1 mark]

(iii)

Draw the Lewis structure of a chlorine molecule and hence explain whether it is paramagnetic [3 mark]

b)

For the following statements, state whether they are true or false. [7 marks] Briefly explain your reasoning only if the answer is false. Because the atomic radii of the elements decreases from left to right across a period in the periodic table, the same trend is expected for the transition elements.

(i)

(ii)

Rb is more metallic than Sr.

(iii)

The second ionization energy of an element is smaller than its first ionization energy.

(iv)

As the bond order between two carbon atoms increases, the bond length decreases.
