ere in Wisconsin, where we publish Gas, Oil & Mining Contractor, we never imagine profiting from the development of oil and gas exploration. We only watch from afar as ingenious new technologies are used to find untapped stores of domestic fuels to power commerce in our country. All of that good stuff happens somewhere else, employing thousands of workers in far corners of the United States. Practically every day, I talk to people working on the Marcellus Shale in Pennsylvania or
found in great abundance in my own home state. Its the highest grade of fracking sand you and your energy company customers are using to slice through miles of rock and unleash the raw materials we need to power this country toward energy independence. PERFECT FOR FRaCking I couldnt be happier that my state is an important contributor to the effort of energy companies tapping vast storehouses of new oil and gas. Across the Badger State, but especially in its northwest quadrant,

the Bakken Formation in North Dakota, for example, who fill me in on the opportunities brought about through deep horizontal drilling. This new run to produce domestic fuel is bringing thousands of regular paychecks during a period of economic malaise. Landowners who lease out their acreage are realizing the income theyve only dreamed about coming from their properties. Grocery stores, mom-and-pop shops along Main Street in small towns, and thousands of small businesses in these exploration regions are prospering but it doesnt happen in my own backyard. Thats what I thought. Then I started learning about a great natural resource that plays a central role in new oil and gas production and its

we had five. Theres been a real boom and its taken a lot of people by surprise, especially in western Wisconsin. The desirable fracking sand is made up of well-rounded mature quartz sandstone, single crystal grains with high compressive strength, Brown explained. They are just the right size and structure to be the perfect proppant to open up pores in the shale, then hold those pores open while gas and oil stores migrate to the borehole. Whats more, theres a lot of upside to using the Wisconsin sands. While fracking sand can be found in other regions, the material here is generally located close to the surface in unglaciated, or driftless areas. It can be mined with little impact on the environment. In addition, Wisconsin has an established rail network to ship ample supplies nationwide in an efficient manner. And because the mines are all located short distances to population centers, theres no need to spend money and resources developing or staffing worker camps. aBUnDanT SUPPLiES The high demand and huge, easy-toreach supply figure to transform Wisconsin into a center for fracking sand, Brown said. Currently rated No. 2 in production behind Illinois, Brown believes Wisconsin could take the top spot this year. Its an ideal situation for Wisconsin to become the fracking sand capital of the United States, and thats what were becoming very quickly, Brown said. Were not going to run out of it. We could supply the gas and oil industry for many, many years and we wouldnt miss it. Four types of Wisconsin sandstone sands are attractive for fracking purposes, according to Brown. They are, from the youngest to oldest geologically: St. Peter is found in more abundance in eastern Wisconsin, and is popular for foundry sand in addition to some uses as fracking sand. It has a limited appeal for energy exploration because it is also found in Oklahoma and large mining operations there produce an ample supply.
there is a big sand boom going on, with untold tonnage of special 20/40 and 20/60 sand moving in every direction via truck and rail transport. The sand in these regions is perfect for fracking super hard and the right size to hold open the cracks that release oil and gas, but not so small as to hamper production in any way. So says Bruce Brown, a geologist for the Wisconsin Geological Natural History Survey. Brown provides information on the geology of the state to any concerned parties, and hes never seen the level of interest in mining that he sees right now with fracking sands. All of a sudden its taken off like you wouldnt believe this year, Brown said. Weve got 20 to 25 mines total and 15 to 20 processing plants now. Five years ago,

Jordan Formation in Pierce County in the states northwest is from the Cambrian period and it is the prime material used as 20/40 sand integral to fracking operations going on in exploration hot spots across the country. It is regarded as having the perfect coarseness for the job, as well as having the highest compressive strength. Wonewoc Formation provides the highest volume of sand, in Monroe, Trempealeau and Chippewa Counties in the northwest, and it is finer material than Jordan. It is easier to mine and has many uses, including glass manufacturing. Mount Simon is the lowest bottom sand, found right above the granite basement in Clark and Wood Counties, in the west-central part of the state. Though it was initially thought to be too dirty to be useful in fracking, it is generating significant interest for that purpose. ECOnOMiC BOOST Nobody can predict how long the heightened demand for fracking sands will continue here, but Brown is confident producers could be mining sands for 40 to 50
years in the state. He expects mines that flourish will be those with the best access to rail transport, while others may prove economically unfeasible in the long run. But one thing is for sure: The mining operations will provide jobs and an economic benefit to our state that we couldnt have predicted five years ago. And it feels good to be an unexpected participant in a thriving industry. Right now its similar to the Gold Rush. Its the wild, wild west and its hectic, Brown said. I cant even keep up with the number of operations out there. We happen to be sitting here with the most desirable material and theyre coming for it.

Know your rights and the rights of your former employee before fighting a claim for unemployment benefits

f your business terminates an employee, that person may be entitled to unemployment benefits. Each state has its own program and rules, but generally, if you let someone go because of cutbacks or because he or she isnt a good fit, he or she will qualify for benefits. If you fire someone for serious misconduct stealing or selling drugs in the workplace, for example he or she wont qualify for unemployment payments. The same
laws favor the employee, so your chances of defeating a claim are less than ideal. The laws are written to give unemployed workers a transitional source of income and to keep them off welfare. Unless the employee engaged in extreme conduct, he or she will usually win in a claims contest. Even more important, fighting an unemployment claim will guarantee an angry former employee who will be far more likely to file a lawsuit for wrongful discharge, or try

step. You and the employee will each have your say. You can have a lawyer there and can present witnesses and records, such as employee evaluations or warning letters. Before the hearing, ask to see the agencys complete file on the claim. This will help you prepare to refute inaccurate statements. Bring all pertinent employment records to the hearing. Also, line up witnesses who can give first-hand testimony about the former employees misconduct, or other reasons why he or she is ineligible for benefits. Administrative appeal. Either side can appeal the referees decision to an administrative agency, sometimes called a board of review. In most states, this appeal is based solely on the testimony and documents presented at the referees hearing. In a few states, the review board can hear additional evidence. Going to court. Either side can appeal to the state court system, but this is rare. Typically, a court will overturn the agencys decision only if the decision is contrary to law or isnt supported by substantial evidence. Avoid miStAkeS Fighting an unemployment claim is always hard. Dont make it even harder by making some common mistakes. For example, dont terminate an employee in the heat of an argument. Its better, if possible, to warn an employee in advance that his or her conduct wont be tolerated in the future. Of course, in some cases, such as when an employee has assaulted a co-worker, an onthe-spot firing is appropriate. After a claim is filed, comply with required deadlines. Respond to the claim notice on time. If you dont, you may lose your right to challenge the claim. And be consistent in stating the reason for the termination. Youll have problems winning if you give one explanation in your written response and a different explanation at the hearing. That will hurt your credibility. GOMC

Suppose you and an employee get into an argument, and the employee leaves shortly afterward. If the employee has quit, benefits arent legally due. But if the employee was fired, he or she is entitled to unemployment benefits in the absence of truly bad conduct. Unemployment benefits are paid from a state-operated fund to which employers contribute. Normally, the amount you pay into the fund is based on the size of your payroll, and the amount paid from your account. If the state fund pays few or no claims to your ex-employees, your required contributions will be lower over time. Should you fight? To keep your costs down, you might be inclined to contest all questionable claims. Thats not always wise. The unemployment

This might happen anyway, of course, but challenging the persons right to unemployment can be the irritant that tips the balance. how it workS Now lets assume youve decided to proceed with a challenge because you feel you have a strong position. How does the process work? Here are the key steps: Filing the claim. The former employee files a claim with the state unemployment program. You receive written notice of the claim and can file a written objection, usually within seven to 10 days. Determining eligibility. The state agency makes an initial determination of whether the person is eligible to get benefits. Usually there is no hearing at this stage. Referees hearing. You or the former employee can appeal the initial eligibility decision by requesting a hearing before a referee. The hearing is the most important

When energy companies came on strong with Marcellus Shale natural gas rigs, Bishops Full-Time Portables jumped at the chance to expand its support services By Ken Wysocky
Thanks to a local economic boom prompted by natural gas extraction
on the Marcellus Shale, demand for Steve Bishops portable sanitation services in Ulster, Pa., has mushroomed. And while hes not complaining about the dramatic spike in business volume, the unexpected rapid growth has spawned a host of challenges for the owner of Bishops FullTime Portables.

From expensive equipment purchases to keep pace with demand to competing for qualified workers with out-of-town service companies, Bishop is challenged to balance revenues and expenses while remaining profitable for the long-term. And though there are no guarantees energy prices will sustain expansion in gas production, Bishop has been told to expect a decade of rising orders. CRACK THE WALLET So how does a small-business owner handle this kind of fast, unexpected growth? For Bishop, the answer is four words long: business line of credit. He says he was fortunate because he doesnt believe in carrying a lot of debt, so he had sufficient equity built up in his business to borrow money for the influx of unplanned capital expenditures. I prefer to have as little debt as possible, he says. I never planned on making those expenditures, but I was fortunate enough to get the call, and my low debt allowed me to obtain loans.

It couldve just as well been a restroom company other than me. I was in the right place at the right time and our nearest competitor is about 20 miles away, he says. I was able to make some (equipment purchases) out of cash flow and financed the rest. Bishop is one of many area businessmen whos benefitting from as well as struggling to keep pace with the economic whirlwind of the gas boom. For starters, consider the growth of his equipment inventory. We had about 150 restrooms and no restroom trailers when all this started in 2008, and just two small service trucks, says Bishop, who also owns Bishops True Value Plus Mini Mart. Now we have about 450 restrooms, 20 restroom trailers and 10 service trucks.

At times, its hard to keep up, he continues. I look out in the yard and see a load (of restrooms) come in and six days later, we might have just six left you think youre caught up, and then something happens and youre right back behind again. But thats business. Its all a great opportunity. Much of the companys restroom inventory supports crews at construction sites for drilling pads and pipelines. The rest stands at construction sites for things such as motels, mini-marts, restaurants and bars associated with the influx of gas rig workers, Bishop says. RIGS POP UP ALL OVER Local residents knew for years that they were sitting on top of the gas reserves. Perfection of horizontal drilling techniques now makes it feasible to tap those supplies, and landowners are jumping on leasing rights offers from the energy companies. This created a great opportunity for Bishop to build his new business. Good timing made early marketing efforts pay off big. Bishop started out with a modest marketing campaign that included advertising in a local newspaper and putting more visible lettering on the trucks. Between that and word-of-mouth referrals, he says sales revenue almost doubled during the first year of operation. But that early growth was nothing compared to the deluge that started in June 2008, when the first drilling rig appeared in the area. Then suddenly there were 20 rigs and that was from just one drilling company. (continued)

To service restrooms, the company owns the following trucks, built by Crescent Tank Manufacturing with steel tanks: a 2002 Chevrolet 3500 with a 300-gallon waste/100-gallon freshwater tank; a 2006 GMC 4500 with a 650-gallon waste/300-gallon freshwater tank; a 2006 Chevrolet 6500 with a 950-gallon waste/500-gallon freshwater tank; a 2008 Isuzu NRR with an 850-gallon waste/350-gallon freshwater tank; a 2009 GMC 5500 with an 850-gallon waste/350-gallon freshwater tank; and a 2011 Ford F-550 with an 850-gallon waste/350-gallon freshwater tank. The company also owns another 2011 F-550, equipped with a 650-gallon waste/350-gallon freshwater steel tank, built by Satellite Industries. I like the flat tanks from Crescent because you can actually put six restrooms on top by using a lift gate, Bishop says. That comes in handy if we get a call from a site where a company is finished fraccing and they ask us to leave two restrooms there, but take away, say, four others and deliver them eight or nine miles down the road to the next site. Without the flat tanks, wed have to make two trips, or drag a trailer around, which isnt very practical because theres not a lot of space at the drilling sites because of all the trucks, people and equipment, he adds. Its a huge advantage for my business. I can send those trucks out and carry 12 holding tanks, too. MAKING CONNECTIONS The business spurt also forced Bishop to erect a 60- by 80-foot pole building for a garage and shop facility. He says keeping trucks indoors reduces wear and tear during winter because they wont start out frozen every morning. Were also working on getting a full-time mechanic on board. Now theres more companies drilling in the area, Bishop says. Nobody really had any idea about the size and impact this would have on our area. When it first started, some of our county commissioners went to a town in Texas to gauge the impact. They came back and said its going to be a lot different from what weve known, and told us to get prepared especially in terms of an influx of people and traffic from trucks carrying water in and out for fraccing. Some guys who had two trucks now might have 20 or 30 to haul freshwater in and frac water away to treatment centers. RAMPING UP Increasing demand requires Bishop to upgrade his moneymaking equipment often. Today, his inventory includes 450 restrooms, mostly made by Satellite Industries Inc.; 20 10-foot restroom trailers manufactured by Rich Specialty Trailers (each trailer features heat, air conditioning, two toilets, two sinks with automatic shut-off valves and two waterless urinals); and 500 250-gallon plastic holding tanks made by PolyPortables Inc.
Keeping Workers is a Major Challenge

While the natural gas work has boosted the bottom line for Bishops Full-Time Portables in Ulster, Pa., its also created a host of challenges especially retaining qualified employees. Finding workers hasnt been much of an issue, says owner Steve Bishop. Keeping them on board is another story, however. Part of that stems from a bit of employment culture shock as residents acclimate to the demanding hours sometimes 70 or more a week required by an industry that works around the clock. Sometimes its hard to keep them on because they have to work seven days a week, with rotating weekends, says Bishop, who so far has hired 12 new employees to handle the additional workload. At the start (of the boom), a lot of people who werent working were still drawing unemployment and didnt want to work. Now its a little tougher because of competition from other jobs. To attract and retain employees, the company pays time and a half for overtime. It also pays competitive wages of around $15 an hour up from $10 to $12 before the gas work started. Bishop says hes also looking into offering medical benefits, which become more economically feasible the larger his work force grows. I have a cash bonus plan, too. Every quarter, I try to (give bonuses to) employees who go over and beyond the normal routine. Theres no set amount the more you impress me, the more you get. Family plays an important role in keeping the business running smoothly. Bishops daughter, Stephanie, handles administrative office duties and her husband, Mike Thetga, helps coordinate restroom service and deliveries and drives routes. In addition, Bishops wife, Teri, works parttime in the office while their son, Jeff, schedules service for the drilling rigs. It would be a lot harder to do this without family, Bishop says. GOMC

nyone sitting in the drivers seat of a company knows that a more diverse customer base decreases the chances of business stall-outs. With that logic in mind, Jonathan Marks broadens the services offered by his company, Reliable Environmental Transport Inc., with 15 DOT 407/412 hazardous-material vacuum trucks built out by Tri State Tank. These trucks have been an important part of our diversification efforts, says Marks, president and chief executive officer of the Bridgeport, W. Va.based company. RET provides specialized transportation services for industrial clients, about 75 percent of which are in the oil and natural gas industries. The multidimensional trucks allow RET to service not only the production, but midstream and downstream aspects of the natural gas cycle. KENWORTH & PETE CHASSIS The fleet ranges in model years from 2006 to 2012 and reflects the companys dramatic growth curve since 2006, when it owned just two trucks. The trucks are used primarily to collect natural gas condensate from holding tanks at producing well sites, then transport it to various companies that use the byproduct in manufacturing processes.

Liquid vacuum trucks for hazardous and nonhazardous waste are the bread-and-butter of our company. They allow us to diversify into much more than just, say, hauling brine water or production water.

Some production wells in the wet-gas area of the Marcellus have condensate, which is a highly volatile substance, explains Marks. We come in on a regular basis with the DOT 407 trucks to empty the production tanks. The condensate is then used for things like manufacturing gasoline or turned into a denaturant in ethylene plants. Built on Kenworth T800 and Peterbilt chassis, the trucks feature 475 hp engines; 4,000- to 5,000-gallon Progress aluminum DOT 407/412 tanks, made by New Progress LLC; 3-inch Blackmer product pumps; RB-DV45 blowers (500 cfm) made by Robuschi USA Inc.; and a BASE wireless remote system to control pump engagement, valve operations, and emergency shutdown system. Additionally, the units include heavy-duty oil field front and rear bumpers. We order higher horsepower engines because of the mountainous terrain in which these trucks operate, Marks says. The trucks are unique because they feature a dual-loading system that

Marks says the aluminum tanks are a value for his company because they dont rust and are significantly lighter than steel tanks, which gives his crews the ability to carry more payload without violating gross vehicle weight restrictions. Dependability is another factor, he notes. If these trucks experience difficulties with the tanks say, a leak or a weld seam doesnt hold then that truck is down and we lose a lot of money. But we dont experience those kinds of problems. We do several other things, like (cleaning) frac tanks and roll-offs, he adds. But liquid vacuum trucks for hazardous and nonhazardous waste are the bread-and-butter of our company. IN A REGULATORY CLIMATE WHERE USED STEEL BARRELS AND DRUMS
are becoming less welcome at both refuse and recycling facilities, rectilinear reusable tanks are making greater inroads into the gas, oil and mining markets as liquid transport and intermediate bulk containers (IBC). The reusable stainless steel tanks fill their footprint more efficiently than cylindrical containers and are designed for stacking while being transported. Hoover Materials Handling Group Inc., headquartered in Houston, Texas, has been manufacturing stainless steel tanks for more than 50 years. These were initially produced for the chemical industry, says Arash Hassanian, director of international business with Hoover. The basic designs were very similar but weve made a lot of refinements since then. At this point, the gas and oil market is our biggest customer, with a more significant use of the containers in the Australian mining industry. The companys bestseller to the gas and oil sector is the Liquitote Stainless Steel series, made of 10-gauge stainless steel using 304 and 316 alloys with a single-seam welded body. While some legacy containers are still made of carbon steel, the rising price of the material has virtually eliminated any new construction of these units. The series ranges from 350 gallons (42 inches long by 48 inches wide by 51 inches high), to 550 gallons (the same footprint but 75 inches high) to 793 gallons (54 inches long by 54 inches wide by 77 inches high). The larger units were developed for one customer and we gradually expanded production of that model, says Hassanian. This model is especially popular for use in offshore rigs involving deep sea drilling. Theyre interested in anything that can get a larger volume of chemicals to the platform in one trip.

IBCs can be emptied from the side or center, but the slightly sloped design of the bottom of the containers can significantly reduce product waste when the lower option is used. A drum typically retains about 3 percent of the material inside, says Hassanian, while an IBC retains about 0.5 percent. CARRY THE LOAD The IBCs are usually used in the gas and oil sector for fuel, grease, solvents, corrosion inhibitors, scale inhibitors, lubricants, antifreeze, coolants and cleaning fluids, he says. The decision to use IBCs over drums is usually made by the end user, who specifies the type of container. In many cases, however, the end user is now the contractor servicing a gas or oil field with an array of chemicals. IBCs can safely carry a wide variety of chemicals related to the GOM sector, although service companies should specify their intended use to the supplier to obtain chemical compatibility information on both the tank and its gaskets before placing an order. Customers are becoming increasingly sophisticated in understanding the (continued)

capabilities of IBCs to contain specific chemicals, says Hassanian. Were here to help them if they have an unusual situation, for example, whether an IBC can safely hold a particular chemical at extremely low temperatures. All chemicals carried in IBCs must be delivered at atmospheric pressure theyre not designed to carry pressurized liquids. Fitted with stainless steel legs on bottom and lifting lugs on top, the IBCs provide firm seating to nestle together as theyre stacked. Pallet stacking is unnecessary because channels underneath each container allow easy forklift access from either all four directions, or two, to avoid drain accessories on some models. IBCs can also be top-lifted, providing all four lifting lugs on the top corners are used. The steel IBCs are rated to deliver any material up to Packaging Group II, and Group III, which covers a wide range of chemicals, for over-road delivery, and are UN/DOT certified. The containers can also be delivered intermodally, arriving or leaving by truck, van, rail or sea. Liquitotes are usually delivered on a flatbed or in intermodal containers, with no wasted space between the units like you would have with circular drums, says Hassanian. Thats important both in transportation and at the warehouse. One 550-gallon IBC carries the same amount of liquid as 10 55-gallon drums, but uses considerably less floor space and you can stack them higher. If you use drums, every four drums must be wrapped and placed on a pallet, so 10 drums would require three pallets, and 10 labels plus wrapping. LONGER SERVICE LIFE Unlike steel drums, steel IBCs are reusable if cleaned and have an average service life of about 20 years, with lifespan depending on the nature of the chemicals used. Hoover also produces rotation-molded plastic tanks, which are housed in a protective cage, and are used in the GOM sector to haul anything from acids to bulk water to remote locations. five to 10 years. The companys Tuff Tank is its most rugged and long-lasting polyethylene IBC, designed for transportation or storage of hazardous liquids. The tank is designed for the harsh environments of offshore rigs, including such factors as salt spray, chemical exposure, and falling objects. Hassanian notes that many landfills no longer accept either drums or barrels and recycling is problematic because of concerns about chemical contamination. A series of federal, state and local environmental regulations requires the

drums to be carefully cleaned, often through the application of extreme heat, before being crushed and recycled, a process billed to the end user. If the IBCs are used to deliver a different chemical following delivery, the smooth stainless steel interior must be washed first. Hassanian says this can be achieved in most cases using a high-pressure water spray, or by sending the units to specialty IBC cleaning facilities. Every time a unit is washed, it should be air-tested, because some of the parts must be disassembled and reassembled for proper cleaning, he notes. Because of their extended service life, IBC tanks are either sold outright or leased by some manufacturers using a simple contract based on a daily fee. These containers can be cleaned and returned at any time. Replacement parts sold by distributors include drum covers, gaskets, clamp rings, fusible vents, ball valves, connection fittings, nuts, bolts, pressure vacuum relief vents and bung plugs. All steel IBCs must be leak-tested every 30 months according to federal DOT regulations, and all tanks with UN markings must be thickness-tested every 60 months; a service that can be provided by the supplier. EMPTY TO FULL Liquitotes can be left outside for storage purposes in a variety of climates, but like drums and barrels, dont protect the contents from either heat or cold. IBCs can be fitted with heating jackets and coils or bellybands to warm the contents in the same fashion as drum warmers. IBC tank covers are clamped into place using lock nuts. Before removing the cover, the tanks internal pressure must be equalized by opening its bung plug. The lid can then be pulled loose from the gasket seal in which its seated. Likewise, before filling a tank, all drains must be sealed and the bung plug opened to release any internal pressure inside the tank. The tank is filled using an aperture fitted with a vent that allows displaced air to leave the tank as liquid enters it. The lid is then sealed, clamped and locked, and the bung plug is closed.

UPGRADE AND ADAPT The design of the square tank also allows for a series of optional upgrades, including full port ball valve, SS camlock, upgraded gasket materials to meet various compatibility requirements, level gauges, vacuum-vent equipment, pumps, mixers, additional outlets, top openings and dip tubes. The containers can be uniquely tagged, and tracked anywhere in the world either by the supplier, or by the contractor using asset management software. Hoover employs its own Liquitrac system employing GPS or cellular devices. Using this system, IBC tank locations, fill levels, test dates, container condition, types of cargo and delivery information can also be monitored. If clients request the service, Hoover will inform the client when a test is due and come to the tanks to test them, says Hassanian. In some remote locations, the only other testing option would be to ship the containers out to the testing facility. Steel IBCs continue to be adapted to customer needs. They can now be specified as double-walled to transport flammable products and hazardous chemicals where transportation and environmental regulations demand it. Companies including Hoover are helping service companies to assemble fracking packages that link a number of tanks using a manifold assembly and flexible tubing. Weve provided 23 special IBCs assembled into a single fracking package system to supply water and chemical additives for shale operations, says Hassanian. Safe driving is essential, of course. But take special precautions with trailers.

afe driving takes concentration, and that is all the more true if youre driving a heavy truck and pulling a trailer be it an enclosed equipment hauler or a flatbed carrying an excavator or any other work equipment. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind when choosing, loading and maintaining trailers. For more complete information, consult your trailers manufacturer or your state or local highway safety agency. Load carefully. Measure your hauling objects length, width and height to be certain they will fit on the selected trailer.
Consider the two vehicles. Make sure the weight allowed for the tow vehicle matches (or is less than) gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the trailer. Your owners manual will list your vehicles GVWR. If you cant find the manual, contact your vehicle dealer or the manufacturer. Take care of the tires. The tow vehicle tires must be inflated to the proper pressure. Underinflated tires will wear faster and could cause the trailer to sway. Keep tire pressure on the high side of the tires recommended range, since a fully inflated tire carries more weight and runs cooler than a
the trailer. Also check trailer lug nuts often and when necessary tighten them to the proper torque. Keep it level. When the trailer is hooked to your vehicle, make sure both are level. If the vehicle carries too much tongue weight, it will not ride level and may not steer properly. Tongue weight should be 10 to 15 percent of the weight of the trailer and contents. Maintain breakaway systems. Electric-brake trailers have a breakaway kit (battery, battery box, and break-away switch with attached plunger and cable). If your coupler separates from the tow ball, the breakaway system will supply power to the brakes and bring the trailer to a stop. The breakaway kit battery should be charged periodically. If the wet cell battery has an inadequate charge, it can freeze in winter and is then useless. You should attach the breakaway switch cable to its own anchor to provide the correct amount of playneither too loose nor too tight. Watch the wiring. The wiring that powers your trailer can wear out and fail,
Careful loading is critical, especially when transporting a clumsy payload like these portable restrooms on a flatbed truck. In this case, steel bars are secured over the skids on the restrooms to hold the units securely for hauling. Strong driving skills are important to keep this load of a dozen portable restrooms and vacuum tank and pump unit from blowing out of control on the highway. It also helps to have a trailer built for the task, like this one, which does the job without lots of strapping.
Some users will place or line up the objects on the ground to take measurements before actually placing them on board. Know the weight of what you plan to haul. That will help you decide whether the frame size, frame strength, axle capacity and ramping options of the trailer you have chosen will suit your needs.

tire that is low on air. Dont forget the trailer tires check their pressure, too. Youll find pressure ratings on the tire sidewalls. Check the coupler. Look for fatigue, damage, cracks or missing parts before towing. Test the lock mechanism to make sure it latches correctly and completely. Use a hitch ball that matches the coupler size for

especially if you drive gravel roads, which can cause the wiring to be bombarded with abrasives. Inspect wiring regularly and make sure it is clean and tucked up into a protected position. It helps to wash the underneath now and then with a pressure washer to remove corrosive salts. The electrical system also can fail through poor contacts in

electrical plugs. A spray of the plugs with penetrating fluid or WD-40 will help break up corrosion. Inspect the suspension. Your trailer suspension may contain hangers, leaf springs, shackle straps, shackle bolts, equalizers, u-bolts, axle plates and other parts. Inspect and replace them as needed as part of normal maintenance. Severe suspension wear may cause the trailer to wander, creating serious instability. Check wheel bearings. The bearings on a trailer are critical maintenance items. Wheel bearings need the correct amount

Blanket Protects DEF from Freezing, Overheating

Wraparound diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) heaters from Powerblanket LLC offer temperature control for IBC (intermediate bulk container) totes, pumps and dispensing units. Utilizing radiant GreenHeat technology, the blanket enables equipment to be safely and consistently warmed without compromising the chemical integrity of the DEF, which begins to break down at approximately 30 degrees F and freezes when it drops below 12 degrees F. GreenHeat technology distributes heat to the entire blanket surface, providing a uniform barrier that protects DEF from freezing or gelling, while maintaining maximum pumpability. The blanket also shields DEF from damaging UV rays, protecting the fluid even when cold weather is not a concern. With our technology there are no hot spots. When youre dealing with chemicals, its important not to overheat them, says Brad Terry, Powerblanket LLC president and chief operating officer. Terry says the idea for the Powerblanket came from DEF manufacturers, who sought a way to keep pumps, gaskets, handles and pumping systems at an optimal temperature for proper operation, as well as maintaining the temperature of the urea-based DEF without overheating it. Producers tried submersible heaters, but found it resulted in localized boiling around the heating element, which ruined the DEF. By applying heat externally to a DEF container, Powerblanket eliminates the potential for contamination, localized boiling and purity failures.
Terry says the concept of GreenHeat technology originated with a concrete contractor who was looking for a way to work during the winter and an electrical engineer in Salt Lake City. Together they collaborated with the University of Utah on developing a heat-spreading system. Weighing 100 pounds, the heating blanket can be installed or removed by one person in about 10 minutes. Standard blankets are rated to -10 degrees F, while Arctic versions are rated to -40 degrees F. Certified to UL, CSA and ETL safety standards, the blankets are available for 275- and 330-gallon tote sizes. Custom sizes are available. The TH275D 275-gallon wrap measures 217 1/2 inches long and 49 1/4 inches tall, while the TH330D 330-gallon wrap measures 217 1/2 inches long and 55 3/4 inches tall. Both size wraps include 69 1/4-inch-long and 40 1/2-inch-wide tops, a universal HDPE pump housing, two extended pump rack brackets and a preset digital thermostat (120 VAC).
