Excitingthingsarehappeningthroughoutourregioneveryday.Manyofusaredoingpresentationsonmusic therapyinourcommunities,forotherprofessionalorganizations.DoryStapletonandAndreaTookerarejust2 ofourtherapistswhohavepresentedprofessionallyrecently.Manyofourregionaltherapistshavecontributed to the AMTA podcast series. Veryexcitingforourprofessionishighschoolstudentinterestinmakingmusictherapytheircareer.Injust mylittlecorneroftheworldIhad4seniorsshadowmeatworkandmakeapplicationtomusictherapyschools thispastyear.Inowhave3morestudentsspeakingwithmeaboutmusictherapyandsettingupobservation times.Wearewonderfulresourcesinourowncommunitiesgetinonyourlocalschoolcareernightsandmake sureyouintroduceyourselftothemusicteachers.Whatbetterresourcethanaworkingmusictherapist?! Continuingeducationisalsohappeningwithmanyofourseasonedandexperiencedmembers.Fivemusic therapists (that I know of) are currently doctoral candidates Heather Wagner at Temple University, Jared LeadermanatChicagoInstituteofPsychology,andJulieAndring,KrystalDemaine,andJeanNemethatLesley University.Gotherapists! A number of our regional music therapists published in Music and Medicine this year. GreetingstoeveryoneintheNER! As many of you know, I will get a group of people singing whenever and wherever I can. So consider this an invitationfrommeforyoutosinganyandeveryday.Ipersonallythinkthateveryoneshouldsingeveryday even if there is no particular reason to sing. Being alive is reason enough to sing in my thinking. So I am extending an invitation for you to sing here and who better to sing than we music therapists, who feel so passionatelyaboutthepowerofmusic?!?! In September of this year, AMTA issued an invitation to sing in memory of 9/11. It was sent out to the membershipintheAMTAviaMusicTherapyEnews,includingalinktoaYoutubevideo,andwasalsofoundon thehomepageoftheAMTAwebsite.Thevideohastwosongsandencouragedeveryonetosingatsomepoint duringthe10thanniversaryoftheeventsof9/11.Iwenttothislink,listenedtothesongsandimmediatelybegan singingthemIcouldnotstopsingingthem.AndIhavecontinuedtodosoeversince,bothinmyworkandin mypersonallife. Thefirstisachantisexquisitelybeautiful,writtenbyafriendofMusicTherapy,ErikLongquist.Thesecondisa wonderfulsimplesongbymusictherapistKateRichardsfromNYC,andwasoriginallywrittenduringtheworkby MTsthatfollowedtheeventsof9/11inNewYork.Thissongaswellasmanyotherstories,songsandreflections were later shared in the book, Caring for the Caregiver: The Use of Music and Music Therapy in Grief and Trauma,acollectionofreflectionsonmusictherapyinterventionsprovidedasapartoftheNewYorkCityMusic TherapyReliefProject,sponsoredbyAMTAandtheRecordingAcademyafterSeptember11th,2001. QuarterlyReviewfortheNewEnglandRegion This quarter AMTA asked the Professional Advocacy committee to review documentation based on the new adoptedpolicyonacronymusagetobeimplementednolaterthanJanuary1,2012.PerrequestoftheAMTA president,theProfessionalAdvocacycommitteewasdirectedtostudytheSelfAssessmentanddeterminewhat, ifany,revisionswouldneedtobeproposedinthisdocumenttoalignwiththenewacronympolicy.Toassist,the ETAB'sAdvisoryonAcronymsandaFAQsheetwithkeyanswersonthistopicwasprovided. Inaddition,2possibleadvocacyissueswerebroughttomyattention.Thefirstinvolvedalocalpublicationusing the term music therapy to refer to the work of a harp therapist. It just so happened that I knew the harp therapist interviewed, and am confident that they know the difference between harp therapy and music therapy.Icontactedmycommitteeandweallagreedthatthiswasacaseofwrongwordingonthepartofthe writer,andthatnofurtheractionwasneededbasedonthenatureofthepublication.Thesecondpossibleissue was just brought to my attention last week and involves a possible non MTBC providing what has been advertisedasGroupMusicTherapySessions.IamcurrentlyworkingwithCBMTtodraftalettertodealwith thissituation.Moredetailswillbeprovidedasthisprocessdevelops.

TheResearchCommitteetakesresponsibilityfortheresearchsessionsatournationalmeetings.Twomembers of the committee, Tony Meadows and Deb Burns, will do a combined Quantitative/Qualitative session. Nancy Hadsell, another committee member, will do a quantitative session specifically addressed to beginning researchers.WealsohaveseveralsessionstohonorthelateHelenBonny.Wewillhaveahistoricalsessionabout HelenandherworkandCathyMcKinneywilldoaspecialfeatureresearchpresentationonGIM.Additionally,we will continue to have the research poster session that has become a "tradition" of research presentation and continuestohaverobustattendanceandwewillpostabstractsfromtheannualconferencePosterSessionon the AMTA website.
