With a warm greeting, not only Ior the hot summer, but also Ior the Iriendship and aIIection that joins us as Iamily,
we bring this edition oI Nuntia to you. AIter the vacation time in the General Curia and on the threshold oI the Vin-
centian Iestivities, we return to our daily work oI bringing you Irom the Curia the Congregation`s news Irom the last
two months. We ask God that his transIorming strength will continue to accompany our daily eIIorts in the diIIerent
missions that he has entrusted us.
The General Curia
The Superior General
He spent most oI the month oI July on vacation. Nevertheless, during
that time, he had the opportunity to take part in the reconIiguration oI
Iour oI the provinces oI the Daughters oI Charity in the United States.
The Provinces oI Albany, Emmitsburg, Evansville, and St. Louis,
united to Iorm one. The new Province is called Saint Louise, its head-
quarters are in St. Louis, and its Visitatrix is Sister Louise Gallahue.
The meeting Ior the reconIiguration took place in Baltimore between
29 July and 1 August. Some Directors oI the Daughters oI Charity;
the Director General, Patrick GriIIin; the Superioress General, Eve-
lyne Franc; the General Councillor, Kathleen Appler; the Vicar Gen-
eral, Javier Alvarez; and 385 sisters oI the diIIerent provinces partici-
pated.
AIter the meeting, the Superior General took the opportunity to intro-
duce Javier Alvarez to the provincial house oI the conIreres oI the
Eastern USA Province. Later he spent a Iew days in the beach house
that this province has.

He returned to Rome on 11 August, had a Council meeting and did
some oIIice work. Then he leIt Ior Madrid, where he took part in the
diIIerent activities planned Ior the International Vincentian Youth
Gathering (VYJ) Irom 13-16 August, Iollowed by those Ior World
Youth Day Irom 17-21. In these activities he was accompanied by
Juventino Castillero and Sister Ana Aparecida Martins, both oI Fam-
vin`s OIIice at the General Curia. Juventino was there during the time
oI the VYJ and Ana the entire time.

On 21 August, he was in Paris to participate in the closing oI the Vin-
centian Formation Meeting Ior sisters Irom the provinces oI Poland,
Slovakia, Slovenia and the mission oI Albania. Twenty sisters took
part in this meeting and the Superior General shared the Eucharist
with them, as well as words oI animation, Iormation, reIlection, and
strengthening in the context oI this Vincentian Iormation meeting.

Louis, Missouri. Wizytatork zostaa Siostra Louise Gallahue. Zjazd z
okazji rekonfiguracji odby si w Baltimore od 29 lipca do 1 sierpnia.
Uczestniczyli w nim poprzedni i wczeniejsi Dyrektorzy Sistr
Miosierdzia czcych si prowincji, Dyrektor Generalny, Patrick
Griffin, Przeoona Generalna, S. Evelyne Franc, Radana Generalna
dla Ameryki Kathleen Appler (wczeniej Wizytatorka w Albany),
Wikariusz Generalny Javier Alvarez oraz 385 Sistr z rnych
prowincji.
Po tym spotkaniu Przeoony Generalny skorzysta z okazji by
przedstawi Javierowi Alvarezowi dom prowincjalny konfratrw
Prowincji Wschodniej USA. Nastpnie spdzi kilka dni w domu nad
Oceanem, ktry Prowincja posiada.
Do Rzymu powrci 11 sierpnia na spotkanie Rady Generalnej i
powici si pracy biurowej. Nastpnie uda si do Madrytu, gdzie
uczestniczy w rnych wydarzeniach zaplanowanych od 13 do 16
sierpnia jako Midzynarodowe Spotkanie Modziey Wincentyskiej
(SMW), po ktrym od 17 do 21 miay miejsce wiatowe Dni
Modziey. W tych dziaaniach towarzyszyli mu Juventino Castillero i
S. Ana Aparecida Martins, oboje z Biura Famvin w Kurii Generalnej.
Juventino by obecny w czasie Spotkania Modziey Wincentyskiej a
S. Ana przez cay czas.
21 sierpnia by w Paryu uczestniczc w zamkniciu sesji Spotkania
Formacji Wincentyskiej dla Sistr z prowincji w Polsce i Sowacji
oraz misji w Albanii. W spotkaniu uczestniczyo 20 Sistr. Przeoony
Generalny sprawowa z nimi Eucharysti dzielc si rwnie, w
kontekcie tego spotkania formacji wincentyskiej sowami
oywienia, formacji, refleksji i umocnienia.

From 22-29 August, he was in the General Curia where he did some oIIice work. He had a Council meeting and a
meeting with the Vincentian Leadership Commission. This Commission is made up oI diIIerent members oI the
various branches oI the Vincentian Family.

Summer is a propitious time
to devote oneselI to activi-
ties that are out oI the ordi-
nary, not only because these
are more numerous, but also
because ordinary obligations
occupy less time. This was
the case oI Javier Alvarez,
Vicar General. He began the
summer by leading a Iour-
day retreat Ior the Iive Coun-
cils oI the Italian Daughters
oI Charity.

He collaborated later in the 'Courses oI Vincentian
ReIlection in Avila (Spain) during the week oI 11-
17 July. From 27 July to 4 August, he took part, to-
gether with the Superior General, in a three-day Ies-
tive meeting in Baltimore (USA) on the occasion oI
the uniIication oI Iour provinces oI the Daughters oI
Charity into a new one, 'Saint Louise. He took ad-
vantage oI his presence in America to have, under the
presidency oI the Superior General, a meeting with
'The Franz Foundation, at which Fathers Maloney
and Heinen also took part.

On 8-9 August, he collaborated in Paris with two
days oI Iormation directed toward the Iormators`
group Irom the Provinces oI the Daughters oI Charity
oI Eastern Europe. From the 10

oI the same month,
he spent a Iew days in his birthplace, Burgos, and
will return to the Curia House on 4 September.
Interreligious Dialogue with Islam

Taking into consideration the
growing presence oI Islam in
many countries and the Iact
that the Vincentian Mission-
aries in many places are Iaced
with this reality and struggle
to Iind ways oI peaceIul co-
existence and collaboration,
the Superior General set up a commission to organize an
international symposium on 'Interreligious Dialogue with
Islam.

The organizing commission oI this symposium was led by
conIreres, Claudio Santangelo and Francisco Armada.
AIter a process oI deliberation, the seat oI this meeting
was chosen: Pacet, Indonesia, a country with a large Mus-
lim population. The meeting took place Irom 7-17 Au-
gust. Sixty-three members oI the Vincentian Iamily Irom
30 countries participated in it. They had the opportunity
to listen, discuss, and share their experiences oI working
with Muslim brothers and sisters.

Persons oI both the Catholic and Islam Iaiths expounded
on the theological, philosophical, and practical aspects oI
dialogue, collaboration, and coexistence.

The testimonies oI many Daughters oI Charity and Mus-
lim volunteers gave the participants an opportunity to un-
derstand that with Iriendship and charity it is possible to
Iind ways oI dialogue and collaboration, which will pave
the way to peaceIul coexistence.
The Visitor oI Indonesia, Robertus Wijanarko, as well as
the Daughters oI Charity personally supported this activ-
ity. The Symposium had the presence oI the Assistants,
Varghese Thottamkara and Zeracristos YosieI, Irom the
General Curia.

National Meeting of the Vincentian Family in Goinia

Eli Chaves, on a trip to Brazil Irom 16 June to 4 July, took part in the National Meeting oI the Vin-
centian Family in Goinia, which had the participation oI 70 persons Irom ten branches. In Rio de
Janeiro, he met with the National Council oI the Saint Vincent de Paul Society and with Rosa
Momesso, International President oI MISEVI.

During these activities, he had the opportunity to get to know the challenges oI the Vincentian
Family`s work in Brazil and especially to sense the happiness with the signiIicant achievements oI
cooperation existing among the branches, particularly the development oI the Popular Missions, the eIIort to under-
stand and to put into practice the proposal oI Systemic Change, and the increasing Iormation work that the Brazilian
conIreres carry out especially together with the laity oI the Saint Vincent de Paul Society.

The Complete Works of Saint Vincent will be published in
Brazil.

The launch oI the Iirst volume oI the Complete Works oI Saint Vincent
de Paul, translated into the Portuguese language, is Ioreseen Ior the be-
ginning oI 2012. This is really an important historical event Ior the
Vincentian Family oI Brazil. The 14 volumes, which contain letters,
conIerences, and other documents, are texts oI indescribable depth and
indispensable relevancy Ior all those who want to Iind in Saint Vincent
a sure model oI the experience oI Christian values, an impulse Ior the
mission, and a Iascinating stimulus Ior charity.

More than just a biography, the reading oI Saint Vincent`s texts can re-
veal to us the depth oI his heart and his spirit: the humility, the deepening oI his great charity, the humanism and sen-
sibility oI his heart, the extremely loving tenderness Ior the poor and Ior his spiritual sons and daughters, the tireless

We congratulate Deacon Mathew Raphael, who, on 21 June, was or-
dained a priest in Songea`s Cathedral by the Archbishop oI this arch-
diocese, Norbert Mtega. He is the third conIrere to be ordained Irom
the Tanzania Mission. Mathew`s Iirst Mass was in the Parish oI Bom-
bambilly. During this Mass, the new Superior oI the Mission oI Tan-
zania, Varghese Ayampilly, was installed.
The Iour missionaries in Papua New Guinea; an American conIrere Irom the
Province oI China; the new Provincial oI the Philippines, Venerando Agner;
a coadjutor brother Irom the Philippines; the Assistant General, Varghese
Thottamkara; 29 priests; and 13 bishops assisted at the celebration.
As Ior the current situation oI this mission, at this moment there are Iour
missionaries. Emmanuel Lapaz has come Irom the Philippines to serve in
Holy Spirit Seminary, accompanying Justin Eke, a Nigerian. Wodzimierz
Maota, a Polish conIrere, continues in the mountains with the Goilas, carry-
ing out an excellent work oI evangelization and social promotion in the area
oI education. The parish entrusted to the Congregation is not just one, but corre-
sponds to a territory oI some Iive parishes, without easy access; the bishop has sent
him two native priests in order Ior them to learn parochial administration. A com-
panion, who will come Irom Lebanon, is awaited Ior Wodzimierz.

The parish Ior which Homero Marin oI Colombia is responsible is one oI the largest in the archdiocese and de-
mands much work in a wide Iield oI rural, urban, and suburban areas with schools, a prison, a mental health hospi-
tal, and communities, among others. At present, it awaits the arrival oI a Nigerian, who will collaborate with
Homero.
Wealth that brings diversity with it.
The Episcopal Ordination oI our conIrere,
Rolando Santos, took place with a celebra-
tion that was very happy and Iull oI great
hope. Inhabitants oI the entire region as-
sisted, many oI them aIter long days oI
travel, but without losing the enthusiasm
and happiness that characterizes them. It
was a ceremony with a village Ilavor and
with indigenous displays through which it
was possible to appreciate the cultural and
spiritual values oI the people oI this place.

Vincentian Leadership Course
From 25 June to 23 July, the Vincentian Leader-
ship Course, Iocusing on the Vincentian as Ser-
vant, was held in the Motherhouse oI the Con-
gregation oI the Mission in Paris. It was organ-
ized by CIF, the International Formation Center
oI the Congregation.
Twenty-eight missionaries oI diIIerent provinces
and nationalities took part; Irom America: con-
Ireres oI the United States, Guatemala, Hondu-
ras, Brazil, Peru, and Colombia; Irom Europe,
missionaries oI the provinces oI Spain and
France; Irom AIrica: Cameroon and Kenya; Irom
Asia: Lebanon, the Philippines, and Indonesia.

The course, which was methodologically a workshop directed toward
local superiors, was structured in Iour weeks. The Iirst week the topics
centered on the Ioundations oI leadership: Biblical, cultural, and, oI
course, Vincentian. During the second week the subject matter con-
cerned the concept oI 'community.
For the two remaining weeks, they were on the conditions oI leadership
in the ecclesial sphere and the Vincentian area itselI. The presenters
were missionaries oI the Congregation like Hugh F. O`Donnell, Irom the
USA, an expert on Saint Vincent; and Dan Paul Borlik, missionary Ior
many years in Central America. There were also shared reIlections by
Jose Carlos Fonsatti, Biblical scholar Irom the Brazilian Province oI Rio
de Janeiro, and Marcelo Manimtim Irom the Province oI the Philippines,
both oI whom make up CIF`s coordination team.

great capacity Ior adapting, which allows us today to discover the Vincentian paths

Od 25 czerwca do 23 l i pca w Domu
Macierzystym Zgromadzenia Misji w Paryu
odby si Kurs dla Liderw Wincentyskich na
temat "Misjonarz w. Wincentego jako suga"
zorganizowany przez CIF - Midzynarodowe
Centrum Formacyjne Zgromadzenia. W kursie
uczestniczyo 28 Misjoanrzy z rznych prowincji
i krajw: z Ameryki - konfratrzy ze Stanw
Zjednoczonych, Gwatemali, Hondurasu,
Brazylii, Peru i Kolumbii; Europy - konfratrzy z
Hiszpanii i Francji; z Afryki - Kamerunu i Kenii
oraz Azji - Libanu, Filipin i Indonezji.
Kurs, z zaoenia o charakterze warsztatw by kierowany do
lokalnych superiorw i zosta podzielony na cztery tygodnie. Tematy
pierwszego tygodnia skupiy si na fundamentach przywdztwa:
biblijnych, kulturowych i oczywicie wincentyskich. Tematyka
drugiego tygodnia koncentrowaa si na koncepcji "wsplnoty".
Zagadnienia ostatnich dwch tygodni dotyczyy warunkw
przywdztwa w sferze kocielnej i sferze wincentyskiej.
Wykady prowadzili konfratrzy ze Zgromadzenia jak Hugh O.
Donnell z USA, ekspert w dziedzinie w. Wincentego oraz Daniel
Paul Borlik, wieloletni misjonarz w Ameryce rodkowej.
Refleksjami podzielili si take Jose Carlos Fonsati, biblista z
brazylijskiej Prowincji Rio de Janeiro i Marcelo Manimtim z
Prowincji Filipin, ktrzy obaj tworz kierownictwo CIF.
