P104 Logistics
Not everything you need for exams is in lectures! Lectures present: Concepts, Connections, Motivation
Interactive: participate in in-class concept questions We cover a chapter a week at brisk pace!

Reading
Do it before the lecture - and after the lecture! Answer pre-flights 50/1000 points
Due at 11:00AM on the day of each lecture (This is lecture #0. The next lecture is lecture #1) Make an honest attempt Important feedback You are graded for participation only

However, Comprehensive Knowledge: Textbook

Read the textbook before & after the lecture

Problem Solving: Discussion + Homework

Participate in group problem solving

Hands-On:

Lab

Come prepared to the lab and experiment with concepts learnt

Taking Notes Lecture notes available on the web after the lecture
Print out as needed.
1/22/07

Why are you in P104?

Because, 1. It is a requirement. 2. Physics is fun.
Much of everyday experiences (why are crystals transparent? Why do mirrors reflect? why does your cellphone work?) which we take for granted are based on the physics of 104.

Physics 104: Lecture #0

Concept of charge Methods for separating charges (friction, conduction, and induction) Coulombs Law Unit of charge ( C ) Principle of superposition

Concept of Charge
Charge is an intrinsic property of matter Two types:
Positive Charge Negative Charge Opposites Attract

Charges are
Conserved: You cant create or destroy charge Quantized: In suitable units, charges can only take on integer values: 1, 2, 3.

Atomic Theory
All things (you, me, this table, air, ) are made out of atoms Basic constituents of an atom:
Protons: 1 unit of Positive Charge Electrons: 1 unit of Negatively Charge Neutrons: Neutral

Atoms are neutral

Not fractional values, like 1.2, 4.25,

Positively charged central nucleus r~10-15 m (Same number of) Negatively charged electrons orbit r~10-10 m

Conductors and Insulators

Electrons are free to move in a conductor

Separating Charge
Triboelectric friction Conduction contact Induction
Proximity/ground

Electrons stay with their atom in an insulator Most things are in between perfect conductor/ insulator

Charging by Induction
Bring a charged rod in near Polarizes conducting surfaces in its proximity

Charging a Metal Object

Neutral spherical object with free charges Spherical object is polarized when a charged rod is brought near it Negative charges are depleted by grounding Spherical object is isolated from ground Spherical object is left positively charged

Positive charged rod results in positive leaves.

Coulombs Law
Describes the force at a distance for a pair of charged particles Quantifies the magnitude and the direction of force between charges q1 and q2 separated by a distance r. F = k |q1 | | q2 | /r2
k = 9x109 Nm2/C2

Unit of charge
Coulomb ( C ) An electron has charge

Direction: Like charges repel, unlike attract
