ADJECTIVES

An adjectives tells us more about a person, animal or thing (nouns or pronouns).

Types of Adjectives There are three types of adjectives : i) Descriptive Adjectives (fat, good, heavy, dry, etc) To tell us about the quality of a noun or pronoun. Examples : 1) Mary is a clever girl. 2) He is a strong man. ii) Demonstrative Adjectives (this, that, these, those) To point out the noun Examples : 1) Have you read this book? 2) Who are those men? iii) Possessive Adjectives (my, your, his, her, its, our their) To show (possession) Examples: 1) This is my friend, Sita. 2) The lizard broke its tail.

Comparison of Adjectives Adjectives have three degrees of comparison : 1) The Positive is used to describe one object / person. Examples:
i) ii)

Encik Osman is rich. Her house is big. to compare two equal or similar objects/person using as + adjective + as.

Examples :
i) ii)

Encik Osman is as rich as Encik Ahmad. Her house is as big as my house.

2) The Comparative is used to compare two objects/persons that are not equal, using adjective + er + than. Examples :
i) ii)

Encik Osman is richer than Encik Ahmad. Her house is bigger than my house.

3) The Superlative is used to compare three or more objects/persons using the + adjective + est Examples :
i) ii)

Encik Osman is the richest man in town. Her house is the biggest in the housing estate.

NOTE Adjectives in comparison: Positive big cheap dark fat heavy kind late naughty old rich small tall warm young Comparative bigger cheaper darker fatter heavier kinder later naughtier older richer smaller taller warmer younger Superlative biggest cheapest darkest fattest heaviest kindest latest naughtiest oldest richest smallest tallest warmest youngest

" More" and "most" are used with adjectives of two or more syllables. Positive beautiful careful difficult expensive intelligent generous Comparative more beautiful more careful more difficult more expensive more intelligent more generous Superlative most beautiful most careful most difficult most expensive most intelligent most generous

With some adjectives, the Comparative and Superlatives are different from the positive. Positive bad far good little many Comparative worse farther better less more Superlative worst farthest best least most
