CERNERs Innovation in Healthcare System

1|Page

Overview and Topic Description

Al Ain hospital is one of the major hospitals located in the emirate of Abu Dhabi; it's one of SEHA group of hospitals that serve most of patients around the emirate. In addition, it applies a high standard of healthcare including a specialized trauma centre and emergency department. The hospital has 412 beds and around 30 specialized departments. On the basis of an agreement with SEHA, the leading European health specialists Vienna Medical University and VAMED have been managing Al Ain Hospital since June 2007. The hospitals and other major SEHA hospitals are using a well updated friendly using information system to ensure and facilitate the transfer of medical information around and outside the hospital. This information system called CERNER through which it allows ordering all kind of medical tests, medications, radiology tests and others by the authorized healthcare providers. All healthcare providers underwent an intensive training when this system was implemented last June. The staff was trained by a specialized IT people from the states and emirates. The system has an interface with other hospital's CERNER system through which any patient's profile can be viewed from any SEHA hospital. This advantage can be helpful when such a patient is being transferred from one hospital to another for further investigations. This allows viewing all patients' medical history, drugs, medical tests and others. In addition, the system allows the authorized user to customize his or her view according to specialty, patients taking care of and others. For instance, an intensive care unit doctor does not need to view surgical patients so he or she can customize the view accordingly. The system takes patients confidently very seriously and allows only authorized healthcare providers to view and do what is needed. For instance, nursing staff can view the administration chart of medications and other related documentation pages. However, their access does not allow them to order medical tests and medications.

The IT people do regular system maintained whenever there is any down in the system or when a feedback is taken regarding a particular issue. The hospital felt the difference when CERNER was implemented and this showed clearly the importance of a friendly using information system especially when an important people are involved like patients.

Project theme

1- Gaining competitive advantage Hospital information systems (HIS) are considered prerequisites for the efficient delivery of high quality health care in hospitals.

Cost savings - Transform your hospital through higher profits Patient centric - Enhances patient experience at all touch points Domain expertise - Dedicated hospital consulting professionals Execution skills - Structured training and implementation schedule to complete projects on time

Intuitive - User friendly interface to increase staff efficiency Modular - Robust architecture to support hospital growth Quality Assurance - Automated testing tools and methodologies Self tuning - No database administrator required

2- Data base management Through the last few decades the technology boom stimulates transferring and sharing data widely, and in order to manage and process them, data base systems were built. By the time these systems evolved from being just archive systems to be more real- time data handling systems, leading the companies to adopt more flexible programs to process the data, such as: Aconex and Primavera Expedition which are widely used in construction sector, or like our study case CERNER system which is usually used in healthcare sector.

3- Security Management Its needless to say that applying and managing a strong security system has become a very critical issue for the companies. They need to protect and hide their data from the unauthorized access internally and externally, because any leaked information can harm the companies current and future plans. Moreover, like in our case (Al Ain Hospital), the failure in securing data is considered a direct violation of the patient confidentiality law, which is applied all over the world, and a failure like this will lead to legal complications and also it will damage the hospitals reputation.

Data Collection
To collect data, interviews will be done by our team to meet IT Department .The material will be chosen from Journals, books and articles.
