Local races causing a stir in communities in Tuesdays general election included one contested Dallas Township supervisor spot and four seats available for Harveys Lake Council in which four Democrats and four Republicans vied for the positions. Democratic challenger Liz Martin managed to unseat longtime Republican incumbent Glenn Howell in the race for Dallas Township supervisor. Martin received 893 votes and Howell received 849 votes, according to unofficial results. All election results are unofficial until certified by the Luzerne County Board of Elections. Martins win is historic she is the first challenger to succeed in nearly 50 years, and she is also the first female supervisor in the township. Howell and Martin set up shop outside the Dallas Township Municipal Building during the day. It seems like there is a steady
stream of people coming in and out, said Howell, who has been a Dallas Township supervisor for more than 50 years. A retired bank manager, Howell said he was mostly interested in keeping the township budget balanced and maintaining local roads. Martin, who ran in 2009 and narrowly lost the seat to Supervisor Philip Walter, remained cautiously optimistic throughout the day. She will join Walter and Supervisor Frank Wagner, who have both served the township for more than four decades. Dallas Township resident Bob Perschau said it was a tough decision to make, but he felt he made the right choice. Youve got one guy in there whos been there a long time and is doing a good job, and a lady who wants to give it a try, he said. One major issue in the township is natural gas development. Two companies, Chief Gathering LLC and Williams Field Services LLC, have received approval to install their gathering lines in the township to tap into the Transco interstate pipeline at a location near the Dallas School District campus.

Harveys Lake residents are hosting a benefit dinner today to aid a local volunteer who has spent much of his time helping others in need. Mike Avery, assistant fire chief of the Harveys Lake Fire & Ambulance Co., lost his house during Hurricane Irene in late August, but that didnt deter him from helping others during the storm. Trees fell on Averys Foster Avenue property, making it uninhabitable. Avery, his wife, Brandi, and their two children have been living at Mikes parents home in Noxen since the ordeal. I was getting the kids up for breakfast when the trees started coming down, Brandi Avery remembered. Theres a big hole in the roof upstairs and its all moldy throughout the house. Avery said she and her children were stranded at the house due to excess debris on the roads. Her husband ran up the street to check on his family and took them to the nearby Harveys Lake Fire & Ambulance
Co. building on Lakeside Drive while he continued to respond to emergencies throughout the day. There wasnt anything else we could do, Brandi said. Brandi said working with their insurance company has been very difficult, and shes unsure whether the family will be able to afford to rebuild their house. She said insurance estimates may be as much as $47,000, and the company would not take into consideration several factors that make the house now unlivable. I dont want to move into a home until its safe for our family, Brandi said. Were not discussing buying a new home yet.

As a member of the Gas Drilling Awareness Coalition and the Dallas Parents-Taxpayers Group, Martin has been very outspoken against the development and the way township officials have dealt with the issue. Kunkle Fire Department Chief Jack Dodson said no matter who won the race, the most important part of the job is preserving the community and protecting citizens. They passed the ordinance and its the only one like it in the state of Pennsylvania, he said. Poll officials said Back Mountain residents voted in typical numbers on Tuesday in the general election, with many polling places reporting a turnout of about 35 percent. George Horwatt, judge of elections at the District 3 polls in Dallas Township, felt the race for township supervisor would draw crowds. Thats one thats usually un-
contested, he said. When theres a challenge to an incumbent, its interesting. Horwatt said turnout was pretty low in the morning, but he suspected it might pick up in the evening, when many would be returning home from work. But we keep people moving in and out, he said. HARVEYS LAKE At the Harveys Lake Municipal Building, residents were interested in their local council race as well. Republicans Amy Williams, Richard Haas, William Monk and Richard Svec faced Democrats Michelle Boice, Ed Kelly, Thomas Kehler and Jamie Coleman for four council seats. Boice was the top vote-getter with a total of 417 votes. Though she campaigned with the three other Democrats in the race as the Harveys Lake Hopefuls, only

The Luzerne County races in Tuesdays general election included filling spots for the new11person county council after the passage of the home rule charter last year, seating six county judges and voting for a district attorney. Republican Stefanie Salavantis, of Shavertown, unseated Democratic incumbent Jackie Musto Carroll in the race for district attorney. The majority of residents in Dallas and Harveys Lake boroughs and Dallas, Franklin, Jackson, Kingston, Lake, Lehman and Ross townships voted for Salavantis, a Dallas High School graduate.
Seven candidates vied for six positions in the Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas, with Democrat Molly Hanlon Mirabito losing a spot on the bench. Jennifer Rogers, a Harveys Lake resident, earned the most votes in Luzerne County. Voters also took to the polls to choose the 11-person county council as a result of the home rule charter passage last year. Dallas Township resident Eugene Kelleher won a spot on the newlyformed council, as did Dallas Middle School teacher Harry Haas, of Wilkes-Barre. The Old Shoe Trophy is a coveted possession and players from the Dallas and Lake-Lehman High School football teams do battle in the last game of the regular season to fight over the trophy. This year, the Mountaineers racked up a 42-7 victory over the Black Knights to retain possession of the trophy which has been in their possession for three consecutive years. Although arch-rivals on the field, the players meet in a much more relaxed atmosphere when they gather at the Huntsville Country Club for the annual Old Shoe Breakfast the day before the big game. Wyoming County receives recycling grant

Reps. Sandra Major (RSusquehanna/Wayne/Wyoming) and Karen Boback (RColumbia/Luzerne/Wyoming) have announced a Recycling Performance Grant in the amount of $4,233 for Wyoming County. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) awards Recycling Performance Grants in addition to funds it allocates to help communities establish and maintain recycling programs. Grant amounts are based on population and the total amount of recycled material. Wyoming County salvaged 563.7 tons in 2009, which could have ended up in a landfill. Supers pass local services tax - and do it legally

Once again, supervisors passed the local services tax in a 3-2 vote Wednesday, which will levy a $52 fee to those who work in the township. Supervisors passed the tax back in August, but the legal advertisement was incorrect and the board began the controversial discussion again last month. The board passed the tax in a 3-2 vote with supervisors Jim Reino Jr., Jeffrey Box and Shirley Moyer voting in favor and supervisors John Solinsky and Frank Natitus voting against the mea-
sure. Residents employed within the township who meet a certain income guideline will be required to pay the tax, $10 of which will be paid directly to the Dallas School District. Township Manager Kathleen Sebastian said the township would collect about $40,000 from the tax, which will be used to continue funding local fire and ambulance services. Reino said the tax became necessary because of 2012 budget shortfalls, despite supervisors attempts to make many cuts to the fiscal plan. Property and earned income taxes are set to increase in 2012, as well.

We tried to spread the responsibility for the tax increase out to all parties, and we felt it was fair for people working in the town who may not be living here to also be putting into the budget, said Reino. The township is proposing a
.07 increase to the earned income tax, which would provide, at most, an estimated $130,000. Property taxes are proposed to increase by .0003388 mills, which would bring in an additional $400,000. Solinsky, who dropped out of
the supervisors race this year due to ongoing discussions about the tax, said it is tyranny to tax those who do not live within the township. He quoted founding father Thomas Jefferson in a plea for the board to vote against the measure. In other words, no taxation without representation. Solinsky said he could not support a tax on people who have no vote. I cant just stand by quiet and
say, Well, we need the money, he said. Thats not good enough. Theres a right way and a wrong way to do things, and just because a legislator finds a creative way to steal peoples money, its not good enough. Moyer voted against the tax last year, but had concerns about raising property and earned income tax rates higher than their current proposed rates to offset the income that would be provided by the local services tax. The $3,007,275 budget for 2012 is available for public inspection at the municipal building.

Penn State students at the Wilkes-Barre campus in Lehman Township werent protesting Thursday in the wake of the university board of trustees decision to fire legendary football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier. Instead, some felt the media attention after details of a child molestation scandal were released was blown out of proportion. Late last week, former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was charged with a mix of 40 counts in a child sex abuse case over a 15-year period beginning in 1996. Administrators at the Wilkes-Barre campus were unable to comment on the situation. Senior Amy Parry, of Harding, said she feels frustrated with the entire situation, from the way the media has handled the story to the firing of Paterno late Wednesday evening. Im sick over how the whole story was swayed, and I think that affected how the board of trustees made their decision, said the 24-year-old information technology student. Parry, who attended school at the University Park campus during her collegiate career, said the student gathering that took place late Wednesday night at the main campus in State College and the scandal itself paints an unfair picture of what the entire Penn State organization looks like. Parry, an executive board member of the student government, said an open forum would be held on the Lehman Township campus Thursday afternoon to give students an opportunity to talk about the scandal. Senior Amanda Semon, 21, of Freeland, said she received a text alert from ESPN News late Wednesday and decided to make the drive to State College in support of Paterno. I respect Joe Paterno not only as a football coach, but as a person in general, she said. He probably makes more money than the governor, but he puts that back into the school and more. Its a shame.
Semon, who said shes only missed one Penn State football game in her life, said people are jumping to conclusions about the 84-year-old coachs involvement in the case, and she felt the decision to fire him was hasty, especially after he had announced Wednesday morning that he would retire at the end of the current football season. Now Semon believes the universitys image might be in trouble in years to come, all because of the actions of just a few people. The people involved were sitting at home while Paterno and Spanier lost their jobs, she said. Semon feels the situation leaves a black eye on the school, and she thinks students entering the football program will have this on their minds in the years to come. hopes the situation wont tarnish the reputation of Penn State University. I hope this isnt what people remember about Joe Paterno, she said. And the reputation of the school is more than what happens at University Park.
An update from the districts architectural firm Monday revealed several athletic fields will not be complete until 2012. Bob Nesbit, of Crabtree Rohrbaugh & Associates, said many fields are close to 100 percent completion, while others have not been prepared yet because of other site work on campus. Those fields still needing work are the discus, javelin and shot put fields; a second field hockey field; a multipurpose field; and what administrators called a pit field, which will be raised using excess dirt on the property. Nesbit said the project is 871 days into an 822-day project, and he added the site work contractor, Charles Corby & Sons, hopes to have the majority of work completed by Dec. 19. Superintendent Frank Galicki said he will prepare a list for coaches, parents and athletes stating what sports will be played on what fields for next season. He also said the fact that girls soccer, normally played during the spring season, has been changed by PIAA to a fall sport is causing a problem for field planning. The foreign language academy is a tuition-based afterschool program students elect to attend. Students through fifth grade can take classes in French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese or sign language. Jack Wega, director of federal funding, announced Wycallis Elementary School has been named a distinguished school by the state Department of Educations division of federal programs for proficiency in its Title I program for two consecutive years. The school is one of 94 to earn this recognition out of more than 1,700 schools with Title I programs in the state. Recently retired Wycallis Elementary Principal Kathleen McCarthy attended the meeting and was applauded by the board and audience for her dedication to the school.
Tux will visit library to read with families

Mike OBrien, Tux and star players from the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins will take part in a lively, family reading program at the Back Mountain Memorial Library at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 22. Space is limited so families are asked to call the library at 6751182 to reserve seats. The players will talk to the families about the importance of reading, about being a team player and about their careers as professional hockey players. Tux will then entertain the children with his antics as the players read to the children. Participants should bring questions along with memorabilia to be signed.
The Tempest comes to MU

The Misericordia Players Theater is presenting The Tempest, a tragicomedy representative of the end of Shakespeares solo-play writing career, at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 17-19 in Lemmond Theater in Walsh Hall on campus. TRINITY DEACONS MAKE DONATION
The Board of Directors of the Back Mountain Food Pantry reminds everyone that there are two official collection sites in the Back Mountain where donated nonperishable food can be dropped off during regular business hours: Hilberts The Tractor Store on Route 415 in Dallas and Cooks Pharmacy on Route 309 in Shavertown. Monetary donations are also needed at this time of year to help provide turkeys for the more than 185 client families on record at the pantry. Food pantry lists drop-off sites
The Kingston Township Board of Supervisors has announced the Yard Waste/ Bagged Leaf Pickup will continue through November 18. Residents are advised to have yard waste and bagged leaves places at the curbside for pickup. Yard waste consists of sticks and twigs bundled three feet in length by one foot in height and one food wide.
Members of the Board of Deacons at Trinity Presbyterian Church recently presented a check for $3,300 from their last rummage sale to Clarence Givens, church treasurer. The deacons will hold their next rummage sale on June 1 and 2, 2012, at the church, 105 Irem Rd., Dallas. Monies from the sales are donated to the churchs general operating fund. The Back Mountain Police Association (BMPA) will hold its annual Warm Coats for Kids coat drive today, Nov.13 in the Thomas Family Market parking lot in Shavertown. Law enforcement officers (BMPA members) will accept donated new or gently-used coats for children. New or gently-used hats and gloves will also be accepted. With the holidays just around the corner, children and adults are busy writing their holiday wish lists. The Back Mountain Memorial Library is also wishing for a few items that are needed at the library. Anyone able to sponsor a project or donate time and talent greatly help the library. If you succeed there are many rewards; if you disgrace yourself you can always write a book. If youre like 75 percent of Americans, you like to doodle. There was a shipwreck in 1664 that had only one survivor, one in 1785 that also resulted in all but one aboard being killed, and one in 1860 that likewise left a single person alive. Considering the fact that shipwrecks are not that uncommon - particularly in the heyday of ocean travel - you might not think this much of a coincidence. Think again, though; in each of those shipwrecks, the sole survivor was named Hugh Williams. Those who study such things say that Roman Emperor Caligulas last words were, Im still alive! If you go bankrupt, your creditors are forbidden from seizing your wedding ring to pay debts. In 1984, a woman named Deborah Martorano was shopping at Bloomingdales in New York City, when one of the stores employees, a perfume demonstrator, sprayed her with scent. The experience evidently caused Martorano, who suffered from allergies and asthma, to spend 10 days in a hospital. This respiratory distress resulted in a $75,000 settlement from the store. Warren Hicks, associate editor of The Post during the summer months has won the intra-mural golf championship of Syracuse University where he is a senior student. Hicks shot a seventy-five over his opponents seventy-nine to win the University medal and have his name inscribed on the permanent trophy cup. The Dallas Post had a nice visit with members of the fifth grade of Dallas Borough School on Wednesday, when their teacher Miss Elizabeth Morgan brought them over to see how a country newspaper plant works. Mr. Post, foreman of the plant, explained how the linotype machine and various presses work, and Mr. Duesler set every boy and girls name in the type. Sem students are named AP Scholars

Fifty-two current students and recent graduates of Wyoming Seminary have been named AP Scholars by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the collegelevel AP (Advanced Placement) Examinations. About 18 percent of the more than 1.8 million students who took AP Examinations in May 2011 performed at a sufficiently high level to merit such recognition. Students take AP examinations in May after completing challenging college-level courses at their high schools. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on the number of year-long courses and exams (or their equivalent semester-long courses and exams). Thirteen Seminary students qualified for the AP Scholar With Distinction award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Back Mountain students who graduated in May are Jared Gollhardt, Dallas; and Mary Thede, Dallas. Ten students qualified for the AP Scholar With Honor award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of those exams. Back Mountain students who graduated in May are James Curtis, Dallas; and Caroline Meuser, Shavertown. A Sem senior who earned this distinction as a junior is Logan May, Dallas. Twenty-nine students qualified for the AP Scholar award by completing three or more AP Examinations with grades of 3 or higher. Back Mountain students who graduated in May are Catherine Clements, Shavertown; Omeed Firouzi, Shavertown; Bijoy Ghosh, Dallas; Jezza Malik, Shavertown; and Brianna Wise, Shavertown. The Lake-Lehman Band Sponsors Annual Fall and Holiday Craft Show will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19 at the Lake-Lehman Jr. /Sr. High School. Just in time for celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas, up to 100 crafters will be on site, offering holiday gift items and home dcor. A wide variety of vendors will sell handmade jewelry, wreaths, wood crafts, candles, cookies, jams and jellies, candy and fudge, soaps and lotions, doll clothes, quilted and crocheted pieces, pet foods and related items, purses, apparel, carpets, pottery, folk art and hand-painted items. A silent auction (also known as a Chinese auction) will feature items donated by all craft vendors. Winners not need be present to claim prizes. Dallas Middle School will celebrate American Education Week November 14-18. Parent classroom visitations are scheduled as follows: Monday, Nov. 14: Sixth-grade parents are invited to visit from 10 a.m. to noon and 1:15 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday Nov. 16: Seventh and eighth-grade parents are invited to visit from 9 to 10:15 a.m. and 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. All visitors must sign in at the main office and wear identification badges while in the building. Rock Solid school head visits churches

allas senior Paul Brace ran 65 yards for a touchdown after recovering a blocked kick to help the Dallas Mountaineers defeat arch-rival Lake-Lehman, 42-7, during the annual Old Shoe Game played this year on the Black Knights home field. It was the third straight win in the Old Shoe Game for the Mounts (9-1), who locked up a home game in the District 2 Class 3A playoffs. The loss dropped Lehman to 5-5 as the Knights fell out of the D2-2A race. The Knights started out determined, running 15 consecutive times to the Dallas 8-yard line on the opening drive. But the Mountaineers defense forced a fumble and then followed it up on the next possession with Braces scoop and score. Things turned in the Mounts favor for good late in the first half when a Ryan Zapoticky pass appeared by be intercepted by the Knights but, after a brief conference by the officials, was ruled incomplete. Zapoticky connected with Shane Dunn on the next play for a 24-yard touchdown pass and a 21-7 halftime lead. The Mountaineers recovered an onside kick attempt to start the third quarter and turned it into the first of three second-half touchdowns runs by Jim Roccograndi, Zapoticky and Garrett Artsman. Quarterback Jared Novitski had the only score of the game for the Knights, a 27-yard run in the second quarter.

Then Todd Phillips led the Junior Mounts offense on an impressive opening drive, capped by a Xander Shaner 1-yard run. The offensive line, anchored by Colin Zeiss, Mike Ropietski, Jack Zeyher, Freddie Lombardo, Alex Hajkowski, Matt Lukesavage and Jack Farrell, opened some big holes and gave Phillips time to throw a 20-yard pass to Jacob Esposito to help set up the first score. Shaner and Jack Gallis then had some big tackles for losses on the next Wildcats series. Esposito returned the next punt 15 yards to give the Junior Mounts excellent field position to start their second drive. Phillips connected with Esposito on another pass to set up Dallas inside the 10-yard line. Then Phillips followed a crushing block by a Gallis walk into the endzone for a 16-0 lead.

Swoyersville won the toss, elected to receive and drove the ball down the field to score the first touchdown of the contest. The 2-point conversion was no good and Swoyersville held an early 6-0 lead. Dallas came right back and, for the eighth time this season, Jared Adamski scored a touchdown on the Junior Mounts first offensive play. Using his blazing speed, Ayden Berndt zoomed around the left end on the 2point conversion and the Junior Mounts took an 8-6 lead. Swoyersville got the ball back but fumbled and Dallas defensive tackle Joe Missle Peters pounced on the ball. Dallas drove down the field with Jared Adamski hitting paydirt, again aided by two long runs by Mitch Burgess and Ayden Berndt. Lucas Shultzs 2point conversion try was no good and Dallas led, 14-6. Swoyersville took possession and tried repeatedly to run to the outside, only to be turned back by cornerbacks Mitch Burgess and Matt Esposito. After a Swoyersville punt, Dallas Jared Adamski scored for the
third time with devastating blocks provided by fullback Lucas Shultz and tight end Sawyer Cristman. The 2-point try was no good and Dallas led, 20-6, at the half. Dallas received to start the second half and Adamski scored again on a long touchdown run, giving him four TDs on the day. Ayden Berndt bulled into the endzone on the 2-point try and Dallas took a 28-6 lead. There would be no more scoring from Swoyersville as the Junior Mounts thwarted their outside running game and inflicted huge losses on their running backs with the inside pursuit of D-linemen Brady Eggleston, Colby Kleintob, Ryan Cuba, Nick Spencer, Missle Peters and linebackers Gavin Adamski and Mark Karcutskie. Dallas O-linemen Mason Calvey, Pete Federici, Parker Bolesta, Junior Atherholt and Tal Richards came off the ball, effectively giving the Dallas backs enough room to run keeping the chains moving. There was no more scoring and with zeroes on the clock, Dallas had its second Super Bowl win in three years. This concluded the season for the Junior Mounts except for the 7year-olds who will play in the Charity Bowl this weekend.
