Welcome to the Linguistic Theory & Methods Course (4.

5hp)
The overall aim of both this, and its 'sister' course Advanced Writing Course; Linguistics Specialism (see 'section' above for details) is to develop your existing theoretical knowledge of linguistics and thus make you better able to research and write the academic C essays (term paper) on a topic connected to Linguistics. This course runs from weeks 43-49. COURSE AIM

The aim of the Linguistic Theory Course is intended to give you some deeper insights into some of the fields that are concerned with linguistics from a strongly theoretical perspective, and to give you a chance to apply what you have learned in practice. By now, you will have already studied some linguistics. For example, you will probably have completed the Introduction to Linguistics course, which used the book by George Yule called The Study of Language, or Linguistics for Everyone (Denham & Lobeck) You will have covered some aspects of linguistics in other modules you have taken, such as Pronunciation and also your Grammar courses. So you are certainly not beginners, and we have the luxury of seven weeks in which we can look in more depth at a range of linguistic fields, and I will be able to introduce you to some more advanced texts and theories, and I will be asking you to study and to make sense of these. If you are presently doing, or are thinking of doing a 'C' essay with a linguistic focus in the near future, then I would suggest that you also get a copy of 'Research Methods in Applied Linguistics' by Zoltan Drnyei (2007) OUP and study it as background reading. We will be using for the 61-90 courses next term.

COURSE CONTENT

A lot of the work I will be setting you will require intensive reading - you MUST do this reading as indicated in the lessons otherwise you will not be equipped to complete the tasks to a satisfactory standard, and you will struggle to pass the exam! So, each week, I will be asking you to do some reading and, every alternate week for the first six weeks, you will be required to complete a brief task. Some of the reading will require close study of chapters from Projects in Linguistics: A Practical Guide to Researching Language (2nd Edition. 2006) by Wray, Trott and Bloomer. (Hodder Education). So make sure you get a copy!! We will be using other books during the course, but I will try to use resources available online where possible.

SCHEDULE The course is divided into three, two-week sections and the final week will be for revision. Section I Section II Nov) Section III of English and Language Change (Task deadline Monday 5th Dec) Revision and Final Exam Week 49 Exam: proposed date: Friday 9th December Week 47 - First Language Acquisition Week 48 - Accents, Dialects and Varieties of English, and the History Week 43 - Pragmatics Week 44 - Semantics (Task deadline Monday 14th Nov) Week 45 - Sociolinguistics Week 46 - Critical Discourse Analysis (Task deadline Monday 28th

ASSESSMENT There will be a final exam in Week 49 on the whole course. The date is tentative..so if you have a better suggestion, or a preference for a time let me know asap, and once I know

what the majority think, we'll make a definite date/time!!! In addition, there are THREE brief tasks in weeks 44, 46 and 48 respectively, each, carrying 10% of marks, and ONE final exam at the end which carries 60% of the marks. Yes, that makes just 90% of the marks - the final 10% will be awarded for your contributions on the forum - some of the tasks will include you working together, sharing data and participating in discussions on the forum (see the discussion forum under 'kommunication' called Linguistic Theory VB). You will receive a final grade (U, G and VG) that reflects your activity and performance on this course, and as both a writer and a researcher within the field of linguistics.
