Read this passage and then answer the questions that follow.

1 Would you hang a stuffed rooster in your home, especially at a strategic place
like the front door? Or perhaps even at the back door?
2 Well, some superstitious people would go to great lengths or pay a handsome
sum to own a stuffed bird and proudly hang it at the doorway of their homes. Local feng
shui master Wong Keen Ming says: “Some people believe that by displaying the 5
rooster at the doorway of the home (front or rear), they can ward off evil and avert bad
luck too. A fierce rooster or better still, a fighting cockerel, makes a better guardian.”
3 He laughs as he recounts another ridiculous suggestion that one should keep a
chicken on the boil (sap kai) throughout the 15 days of Chinese New Year. On the first
day of the Chinese New Year, some people say that you should refrain from getting 10
those born in the rooster year to eat first.
4 He advises: “if you are going to greet someone, begin with Kong Hei Fatt Choy
(Have a prosperous year) and don’t ask, sek pau mei? (Have you eaten?). It is
believed that the rooster will eat up your luck.” Some asked whether they should
sprinkle rice in the front yard. “They believe that by doing so, the well-fed rooster will be 15
happy and the household will be blessed,” says Wong with a laugh.
5 Feng shui grandmaster Yap Cheng Hai laughs off another suggestion advising
people to rear chickens (for good luck?) in the Year of the Rooster. Then there’s an
even more ridiculous suggestion that couples who marry in the blind rooster year will
not have any children. Meanwhile, geomancer Phillip Cheong says he has heard some 20
Chinese telling others not to eat chicken throughout the 15 days of Chinese New Year.
“This is mere superstition,” he says.
6 Wong says individuals born in the Year of the Rat and the Dragon will have a
good year. The year is not favourable to those born under the zodiac signs of the
Rooster, the Horse and the Dog. The Snake, Ox and Dragon are good partners for the 25
Rooster. Thus they would enjoy good luck this year, says Cheong. On the other hand,
those born in the year of Rabbit clashes with the Rooster. However, determining the
luck of an individual based on one’s zodiac sign, he feels, is “too general and
stereotypical.”
7 During the New Year, some Chinese are concerned whether their zodiac signs 30
will “offend” (farn in Cantonese) the Grand Duke (also known as Tan Sui). Those born
in the year of the Rabbit should “not be overly concerned about this.” Based on his
experience, he insists that “if one’s horoscope analysis under the Purple Star System
shows that he/she will have a good year, nothing bad will happen to them. Instead, the
individual will enjoy good luck should he/she encounter more auspicious stars this 35
year.”
8 According to Yap, those born in the year of the Rooster can use the zodiac sign
of the Rooster to help them if they know how to manage themselves. For those
contemplating to start work during Chinese New Year, Yap says, “It’s auspicious to
start work on Feb 15 between 9.30 a.m to 11.30 a.m.Those who tap good luck will 40
most likely enjoy good fortune for 60 to 120 days.” Those born in the year of the Rat
should be at work three hours later. He/she will reap fortune and share the luck with
his/her colleagues. If the Rat breaks this “time-restriction” taboo, then he/she will ruin
everybody’s luck.
9 This year, “red” is said to be the inauspicious colour. However, many Chinese 45
are still following tradition and will ignore this warning from feng shui practitioners. After

all, angpow packets are always in red! Cheong says; “It’s also common for the Chinese
celebrating the new lunar year to display red coloured items in houses, offices and
shophouses to enhance their wealth or prosperity.” However, do not place any red
items (in the Year of Rooster) in the east and north-west sectors of the house or office 50
to avoid disturbing the Star of Sickness (Er-Hei in Mandarin), Three Killings (San-Sah)
and the Five Yellow (Wu-Huang).”
10 What about wearing red apparel? Cheong considers green to be the auspicious
colour. “However, not everybody will enjoy good luck wearing green. Earth people
should not be wearing green as it clashes with their personal elements,” he says. 55
Wong thinks blue is an auspicious colour to wear during Chinese New Year. “Purple,
gold and white are also good. Avoid inauspicious colours, particularly (fiery) red as well
as Earth colours. Black is a no-no,” he says. Yap feels that “wearing a bit of red
doesn’t matter. But don’t go overboard with red (such as red blouse, red slacks). Light
shades of red should be all right.”

They had died at the lands and were buried there, the family said.
But people noted their ashen, terror- stricken faces and a murmur arose.

was a feeling of great unease at the unnatural looks of the family. Soon
the police came around. The family told them the same story of death
