I was recently at the Strategies in Light conference in Milan, listening to a very interesting presentation on the conversion of the English city of Birmingham from HID to LED-based luminaires. It was a compelling story, supported by many facts and figures, as to why LED lighting had been selected as the best solution to replace over 100,000 street lighting fixtures over the next few years. there were some before and after photos of local residential areas and it struck me how obvious the improvement in quality of light was with LEDs; from a dingy light with an orange tinge to clear, warm white, bright illumination. the visual transformation alone merited the change, irrespective of the great energy savings story and the long life of the LEDs.
My lighting experience over the last 25 years lies mainly in Indoor commercial lighting, not so much in outdoor lighting. What stuck me was that the visual impact of the LED switch is vastly greater in outdoor lighting. the difference in light quality of an indoor LED lighting installation compared to a conventional fluorescent installation is almost imposible to see, but there is no mistaking the improvement in quality of light in outdoor installations. the rational argument for LEDs extends beyond energy efficiency, for there is also an emotional case to be made. Who wouldnt want to live in a street with warm white street lighting, evenly illuminating the pavements and road and brilliantly reproducing colours? A street where increased visibility for motorists,
pedestrians and cyclists leads to safer roads; where the ambience is perceived as being brighter and more natural, improving social safety; where the grass and leaves on trees look green and vibrant, instead brown and dull? Is Outdoor lighting ready for the move to LEDs? We have asked many people from different disciplines in the lighting industry; OEMs, specifiers, product managers, quality managers and some end users. now it is your turn. What do you think? Will LEDs replace high pressure sodium today or tomorrow? Cast your votes at www.ledmasterclass.com and join the discussion.

// Will LEDs replace high-pressure sodium today or tomorrow? the majority of SOn lighting solutions are used to light access roads, parking lots and industrial areas. Within these applications we can generally see three dominant market drivers: urchasing high-quality products (defined as products which save energy, P are long-lasting and environmentally friendly) Guaranteed social and personal safety Light on demand there are some very interesting developments within these market drivers; developments which can be used as commercial arguments for replacing large numbers of SOn luminaires with LED Linear Light Modules (LLM). Lets take a look these developments and their impact on the three market drivers: // LEDs are durable products that save energy If we look at the energy consumption of SOn solutions, there are 4 main wattages - 50W, 70W, 100W and 150W. Lets take the 50W SOn solution as an example. this solution provides 3400 lumen of light with a color temperature of 2000k and a color rendering index of 25. A LED replacement, such as a Fortimo LED LLM, which generates a
color temperature of 3000-4000k and has color rendering index of 70, consumes roughly 40W of energy. this means switching to LEDs will save at least 20% in energy consumption. Based on these technical aspects, LED light sources are definitely ready to replace SOn lamps. However, its also important to consider the impact that the application of LED has on social and personal safety. // LEDs can improve social and personal safety next to light levels, color rendering and color temperature play an important role in social and personal safety. On roads and in industrial areas, the recognition of objects, people and color is particularly important. SOn lighting solutions have a color temperature of 2000k, which makes it difficult to distinguish shapes and colors clearly. LEDs, on the other hand, have a color temperature ranging from 3000k-4000k (warm white- and neutral white light respectively). In particular, the neutral white LED solution (4000k) is recognized as helping to make objects, people and colors far easier to perceive. next to color temperature, the color rendering index (CrI) is also key. A Fortimo LED light engine offers a CrI of 70 compared to a CrI of 25 for SOn. this excellent color rendering, together with high levels of
perceived brightness, makes it much easier to distinguish objects, colors, shapes and people compared with SOn lighting. Since LED light offers improved visibility for motorists and pedestrians, it makes roads and industrial areas look and feel safer after dark. taking these points into account, the social and personal safety is perceived to be much better with LED lighting sources than SOn lighting solutions. // LED LLMs can provide light on demand the first question that is asked in any application is whether the light is actually needed. If the answer is yes, its always preferable to control the light levels based upon the time of day or the needs of people and traffic. Light on demand is the obvious solution. Whereas SOn (50W) is more difficult to dim, a LED lighting source offers a range of dimming settings. For example, with a Fortimo LED LLM of 3000lm, the light level can be dimmed with a built-in 1-10V dimming interface. In addition, the optics of the luminaire can be designed and used in a way which directs light only to places where it is needed. Compared to SOn, the light from a 3000lm LED fixture can be directed to the right spot from mast poles with heights ranging from 4m to in theory, up to 10m.
// Longer lifetime means less maintenance But the dominant market drivers are not the only consideration. Lifetime is also important. A Fortimo LED light source has a lifetime of 50khrs compared to a SOn lifetime of around 10khrs. As a consequence, LEDs like Fortimo require fewer replacements than SOn lamps and less maintenance is needed. that means fewer hydraulic platforms are out in the streets, potentially disrupting daily life. Whats more, the CrI of LED also has additional advantages when it comes to the security aspects of industrial and parking areas. // So is LED ready to replace SON? the adoption curve for innovations shows that LED lighting solutions are already accepted by the innovators and the early adaptors. this makes it possible to realize the spin-off to other groups replacing SOn with LED. Looking to the future, the main challenge will be to manage thermal aspects of LED solutions, replacing the high-end of SOn (100-150W). Once the design challenges for higher lumen package LED applications are solved, then there are almost no boundaries to replacing SOn with LED in mass volume applications. www.lightronics.com

Helmond made the switch to bright white LED with Schrders Aresa-2 Optic-F
Streetview without Aresa-2 Optic-F Streetview with Aresa-2 Optic-F
// Lighting life in Helmond the Municipality of Helmond is at the forefront when it comes to the sustainable use of public lighting. this use is based on innovations, service life, applicability, cost recovery time and environmental impact. As far as innovation is concerned, the municipality is fully aware of the important role played by the buyer. Implementing new technologies enables continued development of the same or new technologies. But quality and reliability are the foremost priority at all times. the Weg door de rijpel in the Municipality of Helmond was in dire need of new lighting. Like other municipalities, Helmond is a progressive municipality in terms of public lighting. the possibility to install LED lighting on this road was an absolute consideration. the existing lighting consisted of light fixtures fitted with SOX 90W lamps. One of the desires expressed was to examine the possibility of using LED lighting. An important prerequisite was that the light fixture housing would have to be of an appropriate style. A model that was too futuristic would not fit the surroundings. After approaching various market players, the Aresa-2 Optic-F from Schrder B.V. was ultimately chosen. // From SOX to LED Prior to making the switch, Schrder B.V. and the Municipality of Helmond together visited a number of locations where this type of lighting had already been installed. to fully convince the municipality to make the switch, Schrder B.V. offered to first install a trial version in the street concerned. this ultimately convinced the municipality to switch from SOX to LED lighting. the white light of the Fortimo modules provides a much greater light comfort than the previously used SOX lighting. Colors can be recognized more easily and the light is extremely consistent.
// Safer streets, 70% energy savings A total of 132 Area-2 light fixtures with 42W Fortimo and 7 Aresa-3 fixtures with 2 24W Fortimo lamps were ultimately installed on the Weg door de rijpel. not only do these provide significantly improved visibility and color recognition through the use of white light, but this has also resulted in significant energy savings for the municipality. A simple calculation shows that, if you replace a fixture with a total capacity of around 110W with a fixture with a total capacity of 42W, an energy savings of 70% can be achieved. this does not include the fact that the life span of the Fortimo lights is three times longer than that of the SOX lamps, and the costs to replace the lamps will also be considerably lower. Both Schrder B.V. and the Municipality of Helmond have learned from this project and feel confident about the future. Similar projects have already been initiated at various other business partners of Schrder B.V.

// Zhaga approves second set of LED standards In June 2011, the Zhaga Consortium approved the second light engine specification for the interfaces of a spotlight engine. this engine consists of a LED module and driver (electronic control gear) in a separate housing. the Zhaga spotlight specification supports four possible diameters of the light emitting surface (9, 13.5, 19 and 23mm) and is attached to the heat sink by two screws. the illustrations here show some of the prototypes that were created during the development of the new Zhaga specification. // Interchangeable street lighting engine Zhaga is also moving rapidly to define an interchangeable light engine for street lighting. the specification for a flat emitter street lighting engine is closest to finalization and will be non-integrated and non-socketable. Like the spotlight engine, the street lighting engine consists of a separate LED module and driver. the light emitting surface is rectangular and provides a lambertian light distribution. the specification will also define mechanical dimensions and fixation points for the LED control gear. Philips is committed to offering a Zhaga-compliant product in the market. // Zhaga reveals new logo Zhaga has approved a new logo. Designed as a specification mark to represent the interchangeability of light engines, the logo can be used to identify approved products. Member companies of the Zhaga consortium will be able to feature the logo on products which meet specifications for a specific product category.
// When will the first products with the Zhaga logo become available? the logo may only be used on products which are compliant with Zhaga specifications. Before the logo can be used, the products must be tested by an independent laboratory. As Zhagas test and certification procedures are not yet in operation, at the moment no products carry the logo Expect to see products displaying the new logo as soon as the testing procedures are in place! // Interchangeable LED light sources the Zhaga Consortium has recognized the need to make the LED light sources (LED light engines) manufactured by different companies interchangeable. Interchangeability gives luminaire manufacturers the freedom to select multiple suppliers for light sources without changing their product design. Future editions of LightSpec will report any progress and new developments on this topic. // Growing industry support for Zhaga Zhagas membership has grown from 114 companies in February to 145 companies in July 2011. Companies from Europe, Japan, korea, China, and the USA have now joined the consortium. For more information, please visit www.zhagastandard.org

LEDS EnABLE
Lux Light is an innovative LED lighting company based in Poland. Since its launch in 2009, the company has chosen to focus exclusively on providing LED lighting solutions in both indoor and outdoor applications. What sets Lux Light apart from other lighting players is the focus on tailor-made LED solutions. the companys extensive portfolio currently offers about 40 luminaires which feature different Philips LED modules. Among Lux Lights recent projects is a special installation done for the city of niepoomice in southern Poland. the luminaires installed in front of a 14th century castle required a new, innovative design which would work for a variety of architectural needs from a low fixture up to an 8 meters high luminaires. the luminaires were made out of corten steel - a material which combines the properties of stainless steel with the ancient look of rusted metal. the installation looks ancient, but only from the exterior. the entire system is controlled by a computer and different lighting scenarios can be programmed. this was a particular request from the Mayor of niepoomice, who wanted to make the building even more unique. Every day lighting is a warm, amber color, but during special events the color of the lighting is changed to match the days theme. For a seasonal hunting meet, the castle is lit with a mosaic of greens. For political events taking place in the castle, the facade is illuminated in their party colors. One of Lux Lights current project s comes from a pharmaceutical company. the customers manufacturing demands a strictly controlled process for inspecting the purity of pills. In order to improve efficiency in operations, cameras were installed to replace visual inspection previously done by workers. Unfortunately, the conventional lamps used in the facility provided inconsistent light, which was not visible to human eye, but interfered with function of the inspection machines. to solve this problem, Lux Light created a luminaire using Philips Lexel LED modules. the color temperature of the light was fine-tuned via a computer to optimize inspection camera performance. this kind of custom light was simply not possible with conventional lighting sources. In addition to creative solutions possible with LEDs, an important feature of LED lighting is energy efficiency. A project installed in a 5,000 m2 pharmaceutical packaging facility realized an energy reduction from 26kW to 4.8 kW by switching to LED lighting. this energy savings were very important to the customer, but two other factors were of equal importance. It was critical to maintain a stable temperature of 21C inside the facility in order to maintain the efficacy of medications being packaged. Installing standard fluorescent lamps would have resulted in a dramatic temperature increase, while LED lighting generates marginal heat. Finally, the power grid supplying the factor often experienced power failures. In order to avoid downtime on the production line, the entire facility was connected to two large generators. With LEDs consuming 5 times less power than a fluo lamp, it is now possible to operate the facility for an entire 8 hour day without relying on the unreliable energy grid. the biggest challenge for LED lighting remains the need for good thermal management. Once a good thermal solution is designed, LEDs open new ways of thinking about and using light, and the applications are unlimited.
// Introducing the CosmoPolis Long Life lamp In October 2011 Philips will introduce the next innovation in the CosmoPolis family. It will dramatically increase service lifetime of the 45W and 60W CosmoPolis lamps from 4 to 6 years. this improvement means that CosmoPolis lamps can be expected to last twice as long as most of the conventional lamps available in the market today. // Unrivalled for reliability Ever since its introduction several years ago, the CosmoPolis system has been setting new standards in outdoor lighting by delivering a HID solution with unmatched efficiency and reliability. now the system is raising expectations once again. the 90% survival rate of the 45W and 60W CosmoPolis lamps will increase from 16,000 (4 years) to 24,000 (6 years) burning hours. Once again, this will strengthen the Philips promise of the highest reliability, especially when combined with Xtreme drivers, which offer an 80,000 hours (20 years) operating lifetime. this lifetime further improves the cost-effectiveness of CosmoPolis systems in applications where energy
efficiency and a reduction in maintenance costs are important. the new lamps will be retrofit and entirely compatible with the previous CosmoPolis gear. And it goes without saying that the new products will still boast the highest energy efficiency and beautiful, warm white light. // Committed to innovation While LEDs are expected to make further inroads in the outdoor lighting market, Philips is fully committed to improving the performance of the CosmoPolis system in the future with ongoing r&D investments. there will still be a need for a cost-effective white light solution together with LED lighting options. In 2011, this commitment to continuous innovation has lead to the introduction of the CosmoPolis 45W dimmable system, and is set to continue with the launch of the Long Life versions in October. And the evolution does not stop here. You can expect to see further advances in lifetime and efficiency in the CosmoPolis family in 2012. For more information visit: www.philips.com/cosmopolis

The present lighting solution from Neri and Philips enables us to make optimum use of the latest technological developments. This innovative lighting not only provides excellent illumination and quality of light but, above all, brings big energy savings too.
Franco Polcri, Mayor of Sansepolcro
the town of Sansepolcro now enjoys excellent light quality while saving energy at the same time
//The Background Sansepolcro is a town with more than 16,000 inhabitants in the tuscany region of Italy. the historic town center, ancient city walls and many wonderful churches, towers and grand palaces attract numerous tourists to the area. In addition to ensuring the safety of its residents, the municipality actively works to make the town more attractive, not just to the visitors but to trade and industry as well. // The challenge In order to achieve this goal, the municipality is constantly on the look-out for energy saving solutions. In choosing the Start01 luminaire from neri, Italys biggest manufacturer of solutions for street lighting, the municipality was interested in more than just luminaire design. Start01 is actually a LED luminaire which combines beauty and energy efficiency into an ideal lighting solution for road and residential applications. Particular attention has been devoted to the quality of the lighting, explains Mr. Portolani, project manager at neri. We want to offer our customers the assurance that our products deliver the light we promise. We therefore needed to find a LED driver that can fully utilize the potential of LEDs. this driver had to be a robust, durable device that would offer the maximum product lifetime. It also had to meet our requirements in terms of reducing current draw and controlling the power supply parameters and their intervals (Constant Light Output = CLO). With the Philips Xitanium Programmable
LED driver we found a product that precisely meets our requirements. the automatic power supply control programs, the CLO and the option of variable inputs (1-10 V and DALI) meant that we could guarantee a lighting solution which provides constant light level using the least amount of power. //The solution People have started talking about the new street lighting on the Piazale roma and in the suburbs along Via nazionale. Many of the local residents are amazed by the major positive change which takes place as night falls. the difference between old and new lighting is spectacular. the excellent color rendering means that the surroundings retain their natural color, even at night. of light in a given application. On the other hand, luminaire life is concerned with the reliability of all the components of an LED luminaire system, including the electronics, materials, wiring etc. It reflects lumen maintenance over life, but also the failure rate based on the catastrophic failure of a critical component with the shortest life. that could be a weather seal, gasket, LED, or something else. LEDS are simply one of the critical components among many, although they are often the most reliable components in the whole lighting system. In this case you need to question the system reliability, because if the other components do not have an equally long life they will limit the system lifetime. // Getting dependable, accurate information reliable information on catastrophic failure rates of individual components is hardly available due to the relatively new technology and long expected life. then there is the lack of transparency of the lumen maintenance projections of both LED light source manufacturers and luminaire manufacturers. the question is how specifiers, lighting designers, technical engineers and policy makers can evaluate whether a manufacturers LED luminaire life or lumen maintenance figure is accurate? We have seen that when evaluating LED luminaire performance claims from different manufacturers it is important to compare a standardised set of quality criteria measured in compliance with the appropriate standard. two recently published IEC/PAS documents can give guidance: - IEC/PAS 62717 Performance requirements LED modules for general lighting - IEC/PAS 62722 Performance requirements LED luminaires for general lighting
these quality criteria described in the IEC/PAS documents are designed to ensure that performance claims can be matched against traceable data. Typical quality criteria a user should look for: 1. rated input power (in W); 2. rated luminous flux (in lm); 3. LED luminaire efficacy (in lm/W); 4. Luminous intensity distribution; 5. Correlated Colour temperature (CCt in k); 6. rated Colour rendering Index (CrI); 7. rated chromaticity co-ordinate values (initial and maintained); 8. Maintained luminous flux; 9. rated life (in h) of the LED module and the associated rated lumen maintenance (Lx); 10. Failure fraction (Fy), corresponding to the rated life of the LED module in the luminaire; In short, always look for a reputable LED luminaire manufacturer that publishes product specifications that are measured in compliance with the IEC/PAS performance requirements. this article describes the latest innovation incorporated in the 2nd generation Fortimo LED spotlight module (SLM) range. Specifically, it describes how Fortimos: uality of light is improved with an increased CRI of 90 Ra Q ase of design-in is improved via the use of a new optical dome and E a higher operating temperature erformance is upgraded up to 30% lm/W for 3000 K P ortfolio has been expanded with 2700 K and 5000 lm options P
a thing of the past: a promise that was and still is backed up by the Philips five-year system guarantee. not surprisingly then, hundreds of luminaire manufacturers and thousands of retail businesses took full advantage of Fortimos benefits.
// 2nd generation innovation the central promise of the Fortimo concept is constant innovation within a fixed format. As long as this defined format is used, luminaire manufacturers can easily implement the latest advances in LED efficacy, without having to change the driver, the dimensions of the LED module or the lumen output. It also means that Philips can provide constant innovation, as shown in the 2nd generation of Fortimo SLMs. New optical dome for smoother beam One of the optical challenges faced by luminaire manufacturers in using modules was to improve the homogeneity of the beam. A special developed optical dome covering the LEDs ensures that the light from the different LEDs is more comprehensively mixed creating a totally homogenous beam pattern without rings. Moreover, because the silicone is extremely transparent, less than 3% of light output is lost. In addition to providing a smart and convenient optical solution, the new silicone dome also enables the use of specular reflectors. these are especially useful for creating tight beam angles of 2x8 degrees with a smooth central beam for maximized punch. Wouter Boxhoorn, retail segment marketer OEM Lighting Solutions adds: the dome is a key optical feature that delivers fantastic optical results, a true best in class r&D innovation. It is one of the performance upgrades that takes this second generation of the SLM portfolio to the next level.
// 40% reduction in cooling costs For optimal performance and longevity, the 1st generation Fortimo SLMs required a maintained operating temperature of 65 C. this temperature (known as case temperature or tc) was achieved by using one of the many thermal management options and wide range of heatsinks that are available in the market. now, with the release of the 2nd generation, Fortimos tc has been increased to 75 C. this means that the luminaire manufacturer can use smaller heatsinks and therefore miniaturize his luminaire. In addition, more luminaire designs (those with up to 3000lm outputs) can now use passive cooling strategies, rather than more expensive fan-based solutions. the bottom-line effect of this increased tc is that cooling solutions now cost up to 40% less. // Performance upgrades Overall, the Fortimos efficacy is greatly increased in the 2nd generation, and depending on the lumen output this increase can be more than 30%. For example, the 2000 lm modules system efficacy is now up from 63 to 86 lm/W. the performance upgrade heavily impacts total Cost of Ownership (tCO) and the payback period of LED luminaires, making it an excellent proposition for retail applications, according to Wouter Boxhoorn, retail segment marketer OEM Lighting Solutions In addition, the Standard Deviation for Color Matching (SDCM) has been reduced from five to just three, for even greater color consistency.
// Portfolio expansions the 2nd generation Fortimo SLMs includes three expansions including an additional color temperature of 2700 k suitable to be applied in more retail application areas. A greater lumen output option of 5000 lm means that this new generation can be considered as a significant complementary product in line with CDM 70W performance. And finally, the addition of the CrI 90 delivers improved quality of light. // The ideal alternative today and tomorrow Fortimo spotlight modules (SLM) are the ideal alternative to halogen and metal halide in retail lighting. Fortimo-based luminaires are up to 60% more energy efficient and require virtually no maintenance. Add to that the possibility for closer, more dramatic illumination of merchandise (thanks to minimized Ir or UV), dynamic dimming and assured color consistency and you can see why Fortimo SLM is such an ideal solution in todays retail environment. now, with the introduction of these 2nd generation enhancements, it is clear that the Fortimo SLM range will continue to be the ideal solution for tomorrow, the day after and the day after that. www.philips.com/fortimo Wouter Boxhoorn, retail Segment Marketer, OEM Lighting Solution

In an increasingly urban and mobile world, modern cities and towns strive to increase their appeal and feeling of safety, while reducing energy and maintenance expenditures, carbon footprint and light pollution. the challenges of outdoor lighting are not limited to government bodies private sector companies face mounting energy bills and environmental scrutiny. Luckily, there is a wide choice of intelligent light control and management options, providing a range of solutions suitable for all types of application needs. Every city, and even different areas within the same city, faces a unique set of criteria when it comes to selecting a lighting control option. these constraints vary from budget limits and business models to the currently installed technology and infrastructure setup. Simply turning off the lights is not a viable option, as crime goes up and safety of residents deteriorates in the darkness. Choosing the right lighting solution empowers a municipality to most effectively manage its resources and enables its residents to connect with and experience the city to the fullest. With a growing range of options, it is important to clearly understand the benefits and limitations of each system, in order to answer the most critical question - what is the best light on demand solution for my city? // Sense and simplicity energy saving Looking to realize immediate energy savings without major changes or investments in new infrastructure? then stand-alone controls are the best
choice. Stand-alone controls operate in an autonomous manner, dimming the light based on a pre-defined schedule. the components are operating without a clock or any reference other than the on and off times. All the necessary components are integrated into the light point, and there
is no need for any maintenance work such as battery replacement or re-synchronization. All stand-alone options will deliver immediate energy savings. Dimming, either through a one step reduction in nominal power or with a multi-step and multi-level dimming schedule reduces energy consumption and CO2 emissions. In case the full light is required while already in the dimming period, the systems are equipped with different ways to overrule the schedule and bring installation to 100%. // Get in control of energy and maintenance costs For those looking for the ability to monitor luminaire performance and failures in addition to fully flexible light on demand, a networked control solution offers greatest level of customization, designed to perfectly fit your citys needs. the easiest solution to install provides monitoring and dimming control on a cabinet level. these systems offer a good indication of power consumption, system failures and the physical status of the cabinet. Dimming with this type of solution is possible via a reduction in mains voltage (the only reliable way to do so is by reducing the amplitude) or via a pilot line (also called line switch) that is controlled from the cabinet and gives the dimming signal through an additional power cable. More sophisticated solutions allow for individual light point control and monitoring, providing detailed data on energy use, component status, lifetime and much more. the network solutions can be realized based on different technologies (PL and rF) depending on every site and customer needs. the network - after initial commissioning work is done has a very robust and adaptive communication, avoiding any additional and unplanned maintenance work. A key factor in determining possible solutions is the type of power grid available in the area. If a separate power line serves the lighting application, there are no restrictions on the type of solution which can be used. In case
of a combined power grid, the only viable networked control choice is a wireless solution. the energy distribution companies serving the city will have a clear overview of the local power grid. Finding the right outdoor controls solution depends on the customers needs. the Philips portfolio offers a wide range of options, from the most basic dimming controls offering great value to a sophisticated wireless networked system that gets you in full control of the citys lights. After more than 120 years, the Philips legacy of pioneering expertise is still the leading driver for LED standardizaton activities.
The LED lighting industry has now entered the era of accelerated innovation cycles.
Joost van Laarhoven, OEM Customer Care Manager EMEA Philips Lighting
Although the first practical use of LEDs was as indicator lighting in the 1960s, todays ultra-modern and highly reliable LED lighting systems have their origins in the late 19th century according to Philips. thats when we began laying down the basic methodologies of Quality & Reliability (Q&R) in lighting. Over the next 120 years we built on those basic principles with our experience in electronics, optics, thermal engineering and more. And today, all of these disciplines play a crucial role in the success of LED lighting solutions. Its a legacy of pioneering expertise that has led to Philips becoming one of the leading drivers of the LED lighting industrys standardization activities. And the evolution in LED and Q&R continues. The challenges of lighting uniformity, manufacturing repeatability and color consistency may have been conquered, but with LED lighting, LED lighting industry has now entered the era of accelerated innovation cycles. this requires even more pro-active Q&R strategies in the four pillars of quality, covering development, supplier selection, manufacturing and customer care. Rigorous LED Q&R regime Todays LED Q&R activities start with product development according to strict milestone criteria and statistical modeling. relatively new are
the intelligent protection circuits that guard against excessive conditions. In addition, there are extensive life-testing methods, performed during product development. todays component quality is optimized via careful scrutiny of suppliers, and the rule of partnering only those that have proven track-records, not just for LED components but for suppliers of peripherals such as heatsinks and optics. For manufacturing, we deploy state-of-the-art production techniques, not just in our own facilities but also at our certified subcontractors. these are constantly monitored by extensive process control and tested by Philips engineers. Following that, customer care activities support Safe Launch and Fast Feedback processes to enable short learning loops to development and production. All these processes and combined expertise have resulted in a very high LED quality performance in the field. But it must be remembered that it is all part of an improvement path that started 120 years ago, and looks set to go on and on!

// Why not design a LED driver to survive 10kV directly without clamping to earth ground? In theory, a driver can be designed with sufficient internal spacings to survive a 10 kV voltage surge from lines to case (ground), without clamping the voltage so that hi-pot testing is not affected. However, in typical LED systems, the LEDs are mounted to a heat sink which is connected to earth ground for thermal reasons. A common mode surge voltage of 10 kV would break over the insulation between LEDs and heat sink, therefore voltage clamping is required. the typical breakdown of LEDs to heat sink is around 2 kV, so clamping below this level is necessary even if the driver is designed to handle higher voltages. this is why drivers that can handle 10 kV surges do not help the system pass 10 kV. Voltages must be clamped to a level that the LED-to-heat sink insulation can safely withstand to prevent LED failure. not clamping the common mode surges also puts a large burden on the wiring inside the fixture, requiring everything to be designed to withstand
10 kV (wires, connectors, wire nuts, etc.). this is eliminated by implementing the suppression circuit described below. // Hi-pot testing guidelines High exposure levels can be a challenge when protecting electronic equipment for Category C. typical lighting gear, such as LED drivers, requires a hi-pot test according to UL or other regulatory guidelines to ensure the driver housing is properly isolated from the input wires. the hi-pot test voltages depend on the overall voltages seen in the system or mains wires (whichever is higher) and are typically 2 kVac to 3 kVac. During testing, the measured leakage current must be low (< 10 mArms). the peak voltage of a 3 kVac hi-pot test is 3 kV*sqrt(2) = 4.5 kVpk. this is important because it restricts the use of common metal oxide varistor (MOV) or other surge suppression devices (SPDs) between earth ground (g) and any of the input wires (Line-L, or neutral-n). However, UL does allow
these types of SPDs to be installed after hi-pot testing. Consider this carefully as it is not always practical to add a suppression device after hi-pot testing at the LED driver level vs. installing these devices in the luminaire. // Choosing the right suppression device the LED driver without external protection tVSS (transient voltage surge suppression) is designed to handle surges in the 2-3 kV range for the 1.2/50usec combi-pulse (2 ohm). to achieve a system protection level of 10 kV/10 kA, the external tVSS device must be able to limit the voltage that appears at the driver terminals (LInE, nEUtrAL, grOUnD in Figure 1). to protect for a 10 kV, 1ohm surge (10 kA), the clamping voltage of the external MOV (or other tVSS) must be lower than 1 kV (change to 2kV?) at 8 kA {(10 kV-2 kV)/1ohm=8 kA}. & SURGE PROTECTION
Long-lasting and low maintenance, LED-based light sources are an excellent solution for outdoor environments. In order to achieve a hassle-free luminaire lifetime, it is important to provide the appropriate level of high surge protection. this will ensure the reliability of the installed LED systems. For outdoor applications, the American national Standards Institute (AnSI) and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE ) recommend surge protection level of 6 kV/3 kA for low exposure conditions and 10 kV/10 kA for high exposure conditions.
// What to look for in the MOV ratings AC voltage rating: this must be sufficiently higher than the normal operating voltage range. For a LED driver rated 120-277 Vac, a 320 Vac rating is recommended. For LED drivers rated to 120 V only, 150 Vac ratings is recommended. Maximum surge rating: the10 kA rating is required for the IEEE & AnSI C62.41.2 high exposure level. 20 mm diameter MOVs typically have this rating. twisterspots with Philips Fortimo LED SLM module 2000Lm deliver world class illumination
MAS AntWErP
// The Background Antwerp has a new attraction: the MAS Museum aan de Stroom. the MAS brings together a number of Antwerp collections and boasts no fewer than 470,000 exhibits. It is also an impressive building in which visitors can enjoy a total experience. the collections are displayed in such a way that visitors can enter a new wondrous world on each level of the building. // The challenge A critical part when creating this total experience was the light quality, and in addition the selected solution had to be sustainable. Lichtvormgevers, specialists in customized lighting experiences, was identified as the expert to create the ideal lighting plan for the museum. Although the exhibition architect suggested halogen for lighting the exhibits, we convinced the client that LED lighting was the best option, says Filip van der Heijden, director of Lichtvormgevers. thanks to its higher light output, the Philips Fortimo LED SLM module 2000 lm 33W is a powerful alternative to the 100W halogen lamp. thorough testing proved that this LED module exceeded all the requirements, scoring high on all fronts: perfect color rendering, warm-white color temperature, dimmability and controllability with lenses. In a unique joint innovation process with Philips, Lichtvormgevers developed a customized luminaire with housing, reflectors and cooling elements geared perfectly to the LED module. In this stylish twisterspot the temperature remains well below 55C, further extending the LED modules already long service life. // The solution the MAS is the first museum in the Benelux illuminating its art with LED lighting. the twisterspots with Philips Fortimo LED SLM module 2000 lm 33W truly put the changing collections of paintings, sculptures and other exhibits in the best possible light. // The Benefits the light enhances the unique experience in each room of the MAS and illuminates the works of art to best effect. Our high expectations have certainly been met, says Carl Depauw, director of the MAS. Filip van der Heijden also emphasizes the cost benefits of this sustainable solution. In addition to 85% energy saving compared to 100W halogen lamps, the long lifetime of 50,000 burning hours delivers another substantial saving. In a comparable building, halogen lamps, on average, need to be replaced twice a year. However, with LED lighting this improves significantly to only once every 15 years, he says. this is reassuring as due to the high ceilings within the museum this would mean that replacing lamps is an expensive and risky exercise involving tower wagons and the potential risk to damage valuable exhibits not even to mention altering the carefully balanced lighting effects.
The light enhances the unique experience in each room of the MAS and illuminates the works of art to best effect. Our high expectations have certainly been met.

Superior light and maximum energy savings with Fortimo DLM module
// Background the Stedelijk VSO school in s-Hertogenbosch is a regional special needs secondary school for students aged 12 to 20 who have learning difficulties. In 2011 the school moved into a new building for around 350 students and 100 staff. the open and colourful building provides an environment in which students, staff and parents quickly feel at home. // The challenge the Dutch government has been forced to make drastic cuts in many areas and special needs education is no exception. the school therefore welcomed the news that their new building could have energy-efficient lighting installed, but insisted that the quality of light should be maintained. the head teacher was only prepared to approve the investment on condition that the lighting ambience would be both pleasant and of a high quality. // The solution the latest downlights from Switchtron were installed in general areas. this energy-saving light solution consists of the DLME 1100 mini and the DLME 2000 compact variant. Both were fitted with a Philips Fortimo DLM Module delivering a 43% energy saving compared to market standard conventional downlight fixtures using 2 x 26W compact fluorescent lamps. We made absolutely no concessions on quality by using our newest generation of Ocab downlights with LED lighting, said Michael van Dalen from Switchtron. Switchtrons LED light quality exceeds
that of conventional compact fluorescent systems. It made sense to use Fortimo LED DLM modules in our fittings, because only Philips offers this guarantee of quality. the innovative fittings provide a highly consistent light so there is no perceivable difference between individual LED downlights. they also have a very efficient heat dissipation system for a long service life, and the diffuse light area means that there is very little glare. In total, 550 downlights with the Fortimo DLM were installed in the school. the 18W DLME 1100 mini variant was installed in the toilets and corridors. the 33W DLME 2000 compact version was used in the canteen and staffroom. Philips OccuSwitch movement detectors were used in areas such as storage rooms, corridors and toilets to switch the lights switch on automatically and switch them off again when they are not needed. the cost-neutral solution now delivers substantial energy savings. When you walk into the building you would never believe that the abundant, comfortable light in these spaces is produced at such a low wattage. // Benefits these attractive downlights create a pleasant atmosphere, said head teacher Stphan van den Boom. And they really show off the colours of the interior. the fact that we are also saving energy and therefore money is an added bonus. the LEDs deliver energy savings of around 80% compared with conventional lighting. this has a positive effect on the schools electricity bill as well as running costs for the building. the Fortimo DLM has an extremely long service life of 50,000 lighting hours, which means that these light sources will not need to be replaced for 15 years.

One barrier remains though which is initial cost but the good news is that this is merely a matter of time. the performance of bare LEDs is increasing by an average of 30% per year, and costs of the bare LEDs are expected to reduce sharply as well. (US Dept. of Energy [DoE]). the DoE expects LED costs to fall to less than 1USD/1,000 lm by 2015, bringing it much closer to the cost of fluorescent. By this stage the choice for LED solutions will be clear to all. // Reliable and high quality For lighting designers Fortimo LED modules offer many key features and benefits. these include high efficacies of between 100 lm/w and 120 lm/w, good lumen maintenance, a good color rendering index (CrI), perfectly matched to the application of up to CrI 90
for retail and color consistency over lifetime due to patented remote Phosphor technology: Philips runs extensive accelerated lifetime testing programs with very good results that allow color consistency specifications of Fortimo modules within 3 MacAdams ellipse (3SDCM). the Fortimo range also ensures best-in-class beam uniformity by using remote phosphor and a mixing chamber for downlights and the use of a Dome for spotlights. Both solutions deliver best-in-class performance in efficiency gain and lowest transmission loss in the industry. // For today, for tomorrow In summary Fortimo LED modules offer flexibility. Philips is saying whatever your lighting requirements, whether you are looking to create, a creative and fantastic atmosphere
in your retail outlets or provide sustainable solutions in your offices, the sheer flexibility on all the key lighting parameters offered by the Fortimo LED modules, means you can achieve what you want, and very importantly future proof your choices so as to keep benefiting from the LED lighting revolution.
