ACCESS SERVICE NETWORK (ASN) GATEWAY

INTELLIGENT PERFORMANCE

More and more, mobile subscribers are embracing multimedia communications to stay connected with family and friends, do business, and be entertained. This growth is accompanied by an increasing demand for a robust mobile broadband environment that is equivalent to the wireline experience over DSL and hybrid fiber coax cable networks. To meet this demand, many operators are looking to WiMAX as a key ingredient to further build their broadband access networks. As the leading provider of next generation packet network infrastructure solutions, Starent Networks can help you meet subscriber expectations by delivering a robust multimedia environment for your network. We focus on enhancing the experience people have with your network by creating innovative, powerful, and intelligent infrastructure solutions. Starent realizes you need to distinguish your brand by uniquely shaping the subscriber experience, while improving profitability. Thats why our leadingedge multimedia core solutions have become the choice for innovative mobile operators throughout the world. Our comprehensive multimedia core solutions provide an unsurpassed level of subscriber and network intelligence, superior performance, high availability, carrier class fault tolerance, and multimedia service integration. Whether a green field opportunity or overlay multi-service, multi-access environment, the ability to successfully launch a high-performance Mobile WiMAX (802.16e) network will require an experienced partner, like Starent Networks, who understands what it takes to deliver advanced IP-based mobility services on broadband networks. Mobile WiMAX Solution Mobile operators require far more than basic data transport from their packet infrastructure equipment. They expect to build an intelligent network that delivers a broad array of value-added applications to increase subscriber ARPU and reduce the payback period from their platform investments. A natural extension of our leading packet core product portfolio is the Starent Access Service Network (ASN) Gateway for Mobile WiMAX broadband access networks. Were leveraging our expertise in providing 3G packet data infrastructure into the next generation 4G multimedia core.

Our ASN Gateway is supported on Starents market-leading ST16 and ST40 multimedia core platforms the preferred solutions for many of the worlds most innovative and successful mobile operators. These carrier-class platforms boast exceptional reliability and performance characteristics that allow Mobile WiMAX operators to enhance the subscriber experience. Starents ASN Gateway harnesses the platforms unrivaled throughput, call transaction rates, packet processing, and significant memory resources to provide a highly efficient and powerful core network. Deploying the ASN Gateway on Starents marketing-leading platforms ensures the necessary intelligence and interoperability experience in the multimedia core network required to offer advanced services and better shape the subscriber experience. That way, operators can focus their attention on building high-margin revenue streams. Key Features and Benefits Proven multimedia core solutions deployed in many of the worlds largest Tier 1 production networks Unsurpassed subscriber and network intelligence with unique deep packet inspection and application-based routing High-capacity system meets and exceeds network requirements without changing or adding hardware Distributed platform architecture provides multi-service integration of multiple access gateway functions on same hardware platform Seamless intertechnology roaming between WiMAX, CDMA, UMTS, and WiFi networks High value In-line Services enhance subscriber revenue generation opportunities and network efficiency High performance anchor paging controller/location update register for paging of idle mode subscribers ASN Gateway for Mobile WiMAX Networks Starents ASN Gateway is the ideal subscriber mobility access gateway for IEEE 802.16e Mobile WiMAX radio access networks. The ASN Gateway is designed to support connection and mobility management across cell sites and inter-service provider network boundaries through processing of subscriber control and bearer data traffic. The ASN Gateway serves as the Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) authenticator and mobility key holder for subscriber connections and RADIUS client to attached AAA servers. Starents ASN Gateway is a high capacity platform with linear scaling properties and the flexibility to meet the needs of small and large networks. Each ASN Gateway can concentrate traffic from hundreds to thousands of radio base stations, which reduces the required number of devices under management and AAA transactions while minimizing connection setup latency by decreasing the number of call hand-offs in the network. Due to the flexibility of Starents platforms, the ASN Gateway can be integrated with a Home Agent (HA), Packet Data Serving Node (PDSN), Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN), WiFi Packet Data Interworking Function (PDIF), or Packet Data Gateway (PDG) for seamless mobility between Mobile WiMAX, CDMA, UMTS and WiFi networks. The integration of multiple access gateway functions promotes network simplification, streamlines network management, provides service ubiquity with no impact on the access network being utilized, and reduces capital and operational expenses. The Starent ASN Gateway also provides the benefits of network-based mobility to non-Mobile IP-capable user access devices.

Our ST16 and ST40 multimedia core network platforms were developed specifically to address the needs of packet-based mobile networks. The ST16 and ST40 offer a high degree of system intelligence and performance capabilities designed to increase the efficiency of the network and enhance the mobile subscribers experience.

As a principal member of the Networking Work Group in the Mobile WiMAX Forum, Starent has actively applied our expertise in mobility and subscriber management to help shape the technical standards for interoperability between Mobile WiMAX Access Service and Connectivity Service networks. We also participate in the forums Marketing and Application Work Groups, which strive to achieve successful commercialization of Mobile WiMAX technology and advanced subscriber offerings.

The Starent ASN Gateways flexible service provisioning is ideal for overlaying multiple access technologies, including Mobile WiMAX, 3G cellular, WiFi, and wireline broadband.

In-line Services Starents platforms feature the unique ability to deploy services in-line, meaning theyre integrated into the bearer traffic plane at the edge of the packet core network. Starents ASN Gateway can also interact with external elements by exporting subscriber identity details while maintaining service control. Due to its strategic location in the heart of Mobile WiMAX networks, Starents ASN Gateway has visibility across all subscribers and packet flows. The platform utilizes deep packet inspection to associate packet traffic on a per session/per flow basis. This allows the ASN Gateway to intelligently steer traffic to the applicable services. Service steering functionality lets operators offer customized service packages, leading to the most efficient and profitable transaction. Starent offers a variety of In-line Services needed to manage subscribers on an individual basis, apply enhanced billing schemes, and deploy content-aware applications all done without compromising performance and over-provisioning equipment, which simplifies deployments and lowers capital and operational expenditures. Redundancy and Availability Starents ASN Gateway runs on the highly fault tolerant, carrier class, NEBS Level 3 ST16 and ST40 multimedia core platforms that support the highest levels of service assurance available today. The system architecture contains no single point of failure, both for hardware and software resources. Starent has taken great care to ensure that our embedded and operations software take full advantage of the redundant hardware designs, such as the self-healing switching fabric and independent management and control busses. Further utilizing system intelligence, the solution anticipates faults and provides quick, non-service disrupting recovery to maintain user sessions.
