Whataremeasles,mumps,andrubella?
Measles,mumpsandrubellaarediseasescausedbyviruses. Thevirusesareeasilyspreadthroughtheairbysneezingand coughing. Measles(Redmeasles)causesfever,rashandcoldlike symptomsandcanleadtoearinfectionorpneumonia.More seriouscomplications,occurringin1in1,000people,include inflammationofthebrain(encephalitis).Thiscanleadto convulsions,deafnessorpermanentbraindamage.Onein 3,000peoplewithmeaslescandiefromcomplications. Mumpscausesfever,headaches,andswellingofthesalivary glandsandcheeks.Moreseriouscomplicationsinclude encephalitis,whichcanleadtopermanentbraindamage. About1in20peoplewithmumpsgetmumpsmeningitis. Mumpscanalsocausetemporarydeafness.Permanent deafnessoccursinlessthan5in100,000peoplewith mumps.About1in4adultmenandpostpubertalboys developpainfulswellingofthetesticles. Rubella(Germanmeasles)causesfever,rashandheadache. Encephalitisoccursin1in6000casesandoccursinahigher frequencyinadults.Rubellacancauseseriouscomplications andbirthdefectsinanunbornbabyincludingdeafness,eye problems,heartdefects,liverdamage,andbraindamage.It occursin9in10babiesborntowomenwhobecome infectedwiththevirusinthefirstthreemonthsoftheir pregnancy.Rubellacanalsocausemiscarriageorstillbirth.

Howcanmeasles,mumpsandrubellabe prevented?

Beimmunized.Thevaccineisveryeffective. Approximately99%ofchildrengiventwodosesof measles,mumps,rubellavaccine,startedonorafter theirfirstbirthdaywillhavelifelongimmunity. Whenyougetyourchildvaccinated,youhelpprotect othersaswell.

Whocangetthevaccinefreeofchargein Saskatchewan?

MMRvaccine 1stdose 2nddose ChildsAgeatvaccination 12months 18months Thevaccineisgiventochildrenasaseriesoftwodoses.

Grade8andgrade12studentsthathavenotreceived twodosesofthevaccine. Adultsbornsince1970shouldconsiderthe immunizationwhenthereis:nomedicalconfirmation ofhavinghadmeasles,mumpsand/orrubella;no historyofimmunizationwiththevaccine;noimmunity againstthesediseases. Womenofchildbearingagethatarenonimmuneto measles,mumpsand/orrubella.

Whoshouldnotgetthevaccine?
Amildillness,withorwithoutafever,isnotareasonto avoidimmunization. Peoplewhohaveaseriousillness,withorwithout fever,shoulddelayimmunization. Personswithallergiestoanyofthevaccinecomponents orwhohavehadalifethreateningallergicreactiontoa previousdoseofthevaccine.

Immunization
Pregnantwomenorwomenplanningtobecome pregnantwithinonemonth. Anyonewhohasamedicalconditionoristaking medicationorhavingradiationtherapythatcanweaken theimmunesystem(i.e.,personsonhighdosesof corticosteroids,chemotherapy)shouldcheckwiththeir physicianbeforebeingimmunized. Immunizationmayneedtobedelayedforanyonewho hadimmuneglobulinorreceivedbloodproductsinthe last12months.Checkwithyourdoctororpublichealth nurse.

Acetaminophen(Tylenol,Tempra,and Panadol)canbegivenforfeverorsoreness. ASA(Aspirin)shouldNOTbegiventoanyone under20yearsofageduetotheriskofReyes syndrome.

Ifyouneedanotherlivevaccine,getitatthesametime orwaitatleastonemonth. IfyouneedTBskintesting,thevaccineshouldbegiven onthesamedayoryoushouldwait4to6weeksafter beingimmunized.

Youhavequestionsorconcernsaboutyouroryour childsreactiontoimmunization;or, Youhadtotakeyourchildtoadoctor,hospitalorhealth centrewithanillnessthatmightberelatedtothe immunization.

Whatarepossiblereactionsafterthevaccine?
Vaccinesareverysafe.Itismuchsafertogetthevaccine thantogetmeasles,mumpsorrubella. Commonreactionstothevaccinemayincludesoreness, rednessandswellingattheinjectionsite. Amildfever,arash(thatlookslikemeasles)andswelling ofglandsinthecheeksorneckcanoccurabout7to12 daysaftergettingthevaccine. Temporaryjointpainmayoccurinteenageandadult women. Rarely,febrileseizures,bleedingproblemsor inflammationofthebrainmayoccur. Itisimportanttostayintheclinicfor15minutesafter gettinganyvaccinebecausethereisanextremelyrare possibilityofalifethreateningallergicreactioncalled anaphylaxis.Thismayincludehives,difficultybreathing, orswellingofthethroat,tongueorlips.Ifthishappens afteryouleavetheclinic,call911orthelocal emergencynumber.Thisreactioncanbetreated,and occursinlessthanoneinamillionpeoplewhogetthe vaccine.

Whatdoesthevaccinecontain? MMRIIisaliveattenuatedvaccineandcontains weakenedformsofthemeasles,mumpsandrubella viruses,sorbitol,sodiumphosphate,sucrose,sodium chloride,hydrolyzedgelatin,recombinanthuman albumin,fetalbovineserumandneomycin. Yourimmunizationinformationwillberecordedina computerizedsystemknownastheSaskatchewan ImmunizationManagementSystem(SIMS).Information collectedinSIMSmaybeusedto: manageimmunizationrecords; notifyyouifyouoryourchildneedsanimmunization; monitorhowwellvaccinesworkinpreventingvaccine preventablediseases. Yourimmunizationrecordsmayalsobesharedwithhealth careprofessionalsinordertoprovidepublichealthservices; assistwithdiagnosisandtreatment;andtocontrolthe spreadofvaccinepreventablediseases.
