THE ESSENCE OF GOD

And The Word Was Made Flesh by: Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy The Appointed Son Of God

ISRAEL WAS PROMISED A COMING REDEEMER

he history of Israel depicts how the Almighty Father was trying to bring them from one level of revelation to another. They were provided from with the commandments, patriarchs, kings and prophets, all in an attempt to extricate the serpent seed (spirit of disobedience to the Will of the Almighty Father) lurking within their souls, hiding under the cloak of religious zeal. As early as the days of the exodus from Egypt, the Almighty Father had seen the direction Israel was taking. With the serpent seed still in full possession of their souls, He knew they were heading for a vicious cycle. Over and over they have backslidden, chastised, restored, and then reverted into their sinful ways again. They remained born in the flesh, governed by the serpent seed. Thus, the cycle of unfaithfulness has not been broken. It has only changed shape. Jeremiah 32:30 quotes the Fathers scathing charge against the chosen people, For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have only done evil before me from their youth: for the children of Israel have only provoked me to anger with the work of their hands, saith the LORD. And yet, in the midst of it all, there is a promise that the Father somehow going to deal with these flesh and blood people on a much higher level; not through the priests and prophets anymore but through His very own, His Begotten Son, the promised Messiah. Isaiah 59:20 And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD There is a description of the nature of this Redeemer that is to come to the earth: Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. THE ONE TRUE GOD The belief and recognition of the One True God takes precedence over our understanding of the nature of the Begotten Son. Nowhere in the scripture can we read that there are three Gods or other gods besides Him. The Word of God explicitly asserts that there is only One God.

The Essence Of God

Deuteronomy 6:4 Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God is one LORD There is one God. There is only one God. This truth is central to our faith, for both the Old Testament and the New Testament teach it clearly and emphatically. Nevertheless, despite of the simplicity of this message and the clarity with which the Bible presents it, many who believe in the existence of God have not understood it. The Old Testament Teaches That There Is But One God Isaiah 43:10-11 Before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no savior. Isaiah 44:6 I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God Isaiah 44:8 Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any Isaiah 44:24 I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself. Isaiah 45:6 There is none beside me. I am the LORD and there is none else. Isaiah 45:21-22 There is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me. Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. Isaiah 46:9 Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me. In short, the Old Testament speaks of God in terms of being one. Many times the Bible calls God the Holy One (Psalm 71:22; 78:41; Isaiah 1:4; 5:9; 5:24), but never the holy two, holy three, or the holy many. Surely, God could not make it plainer that no plurality whatsoever exists in the Godhead. In short the Old Testament affirms that God is absolutely one in number. The New Testament Teaches That There is But One God The Begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, gave emphasis on Deuteronomy 6:4, calling it the first of all the commandments. Mark 12:29-30 29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:

30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy
strength: this is the first commandment. The New Testament confirms the Old Testament teaching of one God and plainly reiterates this message many times. Romans 3:30 Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith. 1 Corinthians 8:4 And concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one. 1 Corinthians 8:6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him. Galatians 3:20 Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one. Ephesians 4:6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. 1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. James 2:9 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest will: the devils also believe, and tremble. Again the New Testament referred to Almighty Father as the Holy One 1 John 2:20 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things. There is one throne in heaven and One sits upon it. Revelation 4:2 And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne. The above Scriptural references are sufficient to establish that the New Testament also teaches the singleness of our Almighty Father. THE NATURE OF GOD To continue our study of the singleness of Divine Being, it is essential that we learn more about some of His divine characteristics that are related to this learning. Of course, our small human minds cannot

fully grasped all there is to know about Him, but the Scripture depict some basic attributes that God possesses that would help us understand the essence of God. God is a Spirit The Lord Jesus Christ proclaimed this truth in John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. The Bible reveals it consistently, from Galatians 1:2, And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. to Revelations 2:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life free. Hebrew 12:9 calls God the Father of spirits: Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? What is a spirit? Websters Dictionary includes in its definition of the word the following: A supernatural, incorporeal, rational being usually invisible to human beings but having the power to become visible at will. This definition emphasizes that a spirit does not have flesh and bones like we do. Luke 24:39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. Similarly, Jesus implied that the Spirit of God does not have flesh and blood. Matthew 16:17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. So, when the Bible says that God is a Spirit, it means that He cannot be seen or touch physically by human beings, but He has the power to manifest Himself if He so wills. God is Invisible Since God is a Spirit, He is invisible unless He chooses to manifest Himself in some form visible to man. God told Moses, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live. (Exodus 33:20). No man hath seen God at any time: John 1:18 No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. 1 John 4:12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

The Essence Of God

Not only has no man ever seen God, but no man can see God. 1 Timothy 6:16 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen. Although man can see God when He appears in various forms, no man can see directly the invisible Spirit of God. God is Omnipresent The Almighty Father can be everywhere at the same time. He is the only Spirit that is truly omnipresent; for all other spirit beings such as devils, angels, and satan himself can be confined to specific locations. John 1:6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. Revelation 20:1-3 1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the devil, and satan, and bound him a thousand years, 3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more,
till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. Solomon recognized Gods omnipresence when he prayed at the dedication of the Temple, saying, 1 Kings 8:27 But will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I builded? 2 Chronicles 2:6 But who is able to build him an house, seeing the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain him? Who am I then, that I should build him an house, save only to burn sacrifice before him. God Himself declared His omnipresence by saying: Isaiah 66:1 Thus saith the LORD, the heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? And where is the place of my rest? Perhaps, the most beautiful description of Gods omnipresence is found in; Psalm 139:7-13 7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or shall I flee from thy presence?

The Essence Of God

8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. 9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. 11 If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. 12 Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee. 13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mothers womb.
When the Almighty Father came to earth or appeared to a man, it does not negate His omnipresence. It simply means the focus of His activity has shifted to earth at least as far as a certain individual or a certain situation is concerned. When God comes to earth, heaven is not empty. He is still just as much in heaven as ever. He can act simultaneously in heaven and on earth, or at several locations on earth. It is very important that we recognize the magnitude of Gods omnipresence and not limit it by our human experience. THE ESSENCE OF GOD The essence of God according to John 4:24 is that God is a Spirit. Being a Spirit, He can be present everywhere as one of His titles, the OMNIPRESENT ONE, conveys. The Spirit cannot be seen but its presence is felt. However, this Spirit, according to John 1:1, has a Word with Him; and this Word is God. In The Beginning John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. All through the Old Testament account, we can see how God revealed Himself using His Spirit and Word. In Mt. Sinai, He spoke to His people but He was not seen at all. His Spirit and His Word go together and They are one as much as man and his voice are not two distinct entities but are one and the same. This is the essence of God in the Old Testament Spirit and Word. The Word can only be heard but not seen just like the Spirit. As we continue, let us proceed to the manifestation of the Word. And The Word Was Made Flesh John 1:1-14 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God...and the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.

The Essence Of God

Now we came to the New Testament. According to Matthew 1:18, Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. The child in the womb of Mary was conceived of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Father of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the Word of God in the Old Testament, now called the Son of God in the New Testament. In the same vein, the Son of God in the New Testament. In the same vein, the Spirit in the Old Testament became the Father in the New Testament; but They are not separate; They are one. Now, we can see the Spirit and the Word. 1 John 1:1-2 evidently says, That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and show unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) The verse talks about the Word of Life which is the Word of God. In the Old Testament, the Word is only heard but not seen; but in the New Testament (Matthew 1:18-21), the Word took on the form of a human flesh according to John 1:14. Thus, He is now called as the Begotten Son of God JESUS CHRIST. God is a Spirit without flesh and blood and invisible to man. In order to make Himself visible to man and in order to shed innocent blood for our sins, He had to put on flesh. Jesus is not another God or a part of God, but He is the God of the Old Testament robed in flesh. He is the Almighty Father Who came in flesh to bridge the gap between man and God that mans sin had created. He put on flesh, as a man put on a coat. THE MYSTERY OF GODLINESS 1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. The fact that God became flesh is one of the most wonderful and yet one of the incomprehensible things of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh... (1 Timothy 3:16). Our Lord Jesus Christ is like no other man that ever has been or will be. He has two natures; He is fully God and fully man. Most problems in peoples minds concerning the Godhead stem from this great mystery. They cannot understand the dual nature of Christ and cannot correctly separate His two roles. They cannot comprehend how God could take on the form of a baby and live among men. The mystery of God in flesh was also a great stumbling block to Jews. They never could understand how Jesus, being a man, could also be God. John 10:33 The Jews answered him, saying, For A good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.

The Essence Of God

JESUS CHRIST Both God and Man From the Bible we see that Jesus Christ had two distinct natures in a way that no other human being has ever had. One nature is human or fleshly; the other nature is divine or Spirit. Jesus was both fully man and fully God. The name Jesus refers to the eternal Spirit of God (the Father) dwelling in the flesh. We can use the name Jesus to describe either one of His two natures or both. For example, when we say Jesus died on the cross, we mean His flesh died on the cross. When we say Jesus lives in our hearts, we mean His Spirit is there. Below is a comparative list that will illustrate what we mean when we say Jesus had two natures or a dual nature. As a man, Jesus Was born a baby Grew mentally, physically, spiritually, socially Was tempted by the devil Hungered Thirsted Grew weary Slept in a storm Prayed Was scourged and beaten Died Was a sacrifice for sin Did not know all things Had no power Was inferior to God Was a servant Scriptural Reference Luke 2:7 Luke 2:52 Luke 4:2 Matthew 4:2 John 19:28 John 4:6 Mark 4:38 Luke 22:41 John 19:1-3 Mark 15:37 Hebrews 10:10-12 Mark 13:32 John 5:30 John 14:28 Philippians 2:7-8 But as God, the Almighty Father Existed from eternity Never changes Cast out devils Was the Bread of Life and miraculously fed multitudes Gave living water Gave rest Calmed the storm Answered prayer Healed the sick Raised His own body from the dead Forgive sin Knew all things Had all power Was equal to God was God Was King of kings Scriptural Reference Micah 5:2; John 1:1-2 Hebrews 13:8 Matthew 12:28 John 6:35; Mark 6:38-44, 52 John 4:14 Matthew 11:28 Mark 4:39-41 John 14:14 Matthew 8:16-17; 1 Peter 2:24 John 2:19-21; 20:9 Mark 2:5-7 John 21:17 Matthew 28:18; Colossians 2:10 John 5:18 Revelation 19:16

The Essence Of God

We can resolve most questions about the Godhead if we properly understand the dual nature of Jesus. When we read a statement about Jesus, we must determine if it describes Jesus as a man or as God. Moreover, whenever Jesus speaks in the Scripture, we must determine whether He is speaking as man or as God. Sometimes it is easy to get confused when the Bible describes Jesus in these two different roles, especially when it describes Him acting in both roles in the same story. For example, He could sleep one minute and calm down the storm the next minute. He could speak as man one moment and then as God the next moment. SON OF GOD, NOT GOD THE SON We should consider the dual nature of Christ into the framework of biblical terminology. The term Father refers to God Himself God in all His deity, the Creator of us all. God the Father, can be read in the Scriptures: Titus 1:4 To Titus, my own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord our Jesus Christ our Saviour. However, the Bible does not use the term God the Son, not even once time. It is not a correct term because the Son of God refers to the humanity of Jesus Christ. The Son of God is not a separate person in the Godhead, but the physical expression of the one God. The Son is the image of the invisible God. Colossians 1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: and the express image of His [Gods] person. Hebrews 1:3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high. Just as a signature stamp leaves an exact likeness on paper, or just as a seal leaves an exact impression when pressed in wax. So the Son of God is the exact expression of the Spirit of God in flesh. Man could not see the invisible God; so God made an exact likeness of Himself in flesh, impressed His very nature in flesh, came Himself in flesh, so that man could see and know Him. Other Son of God Before The Begotten Son We should note that the angels are called sons of God. Job 38:7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? Adam was also the son of God by creation. (Genesis 1:26-27; 2:7) Luke 3:38 Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.

The Essence Of God

However, Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God. He is the only One ever conceived or begotten by the Spirit of God. John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he give his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. The Sonship of Jesus Christ is not Eternal John 3:16 calls Jesus the only Begotten Son of God. However, many people use to phrase eternal Son. However, the Bible never uses it and it expresses a concept contradicted by Scripture. The word begotten is a form of the verb beget, which means to procreate, to father, to sire. Thus, begotten indicates a definite point in time the point at which conception takes place. By definition, the begetter (father) always must come before the begotten (offspring). There must be a time when the begetter exists and the begotten is not yet in existence, and there must be a point in time when the act of begetting occurs. Clearly, the humanity of Jesus is not eternal but was born in Bethlehem. One can speak of eternality past, present, and future only with respect to God. Since Son of God refers to humanity or deity as manifest in humanity, the idea of an eternal Son is incomprehensible. The Son of God had a beginning. The Beginning and Ending of the Begotten Son The Sonship or the role of the Son began with the child conceived in the womb of Mary. The Scripture make this perfectly clear. Galatians 4:4 says, But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law. The Son came in the fullness of time not in eternity past. The Son was made of a woman not begotten eternally. The Son was made under the law not before the law. The Son of God was begotten when the Spirit of God miraculously caused conception to take place in the womb of Mary. From all of these it is easy to see that the Son is not eternal, but was begotten by God almost 2000 years ago. Not only did a Sonship have a beginning, but it will, in at least one sense, have an ending. This is evident from 1 Corinthians 15:23-28. 1 Corinthians 15:23-28 23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christs at his coming.

24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom of God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all
rule and all authority and power.

25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. 27 For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted,
which did put all things under him. him, that God may be all in all.

28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under

The Essence Of God

But it is easily explained if we realize that Son of God refers to a specific role that God temporarily assumed for the purpose of redemption. When the reasons for the Sonship cease to exist, God (Jesus) will cease acting in His role as Son, and will return to His original role as Father, Creator, and Ruler of all. The Sonship will be given to an heir coming from the fallen Adamic race, that will overcome and triumphed over the serpent seed (spirit of disobedience to the Will of the Father), and will be deposited with the Spirit of obedience coming from the Almighty Father. THE FATHER AND SON ARE ONE John 10:30 I and my Father are one. John 10:38 But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him. The Godhead is not like a Human Family Even the apostle Philip was confused everytime he hears Jesus Christ referring to somebody else as the Father: John 14:8-10 8 Philip saith unto him, Lord show us the Father, and it sufficeth us.

9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath
seen the Father; and how sayest thou, Show us the Father? the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but
In a human family, a son is a different person from the father. A human son when asked where is his father, could not just reply, He that hath seen me hath seen the Father. It is much different in the case of the Godhead. FATHER, SON AND HOLY GHOST Only one verse in the entire Bible mention Father, Son, and Holy Ghost in a way that could suggest three persons in the Godhead. Matthew 1:18 tells us that Mary conceived and give birth to Jesus Christ. Scripture also tells us that the conception was of the Holy Ghost. When the child was born, the Word became the Son who called out Father. Who is this Father that the Son calls out to? He is the One who conceived Him none other than the Holy Ghost.

The Essence Of God

The Spirit is not distinct from the Word. The Word only manifested itself in the flesh that is why the Word can now speak. But if you ask, where is the One who sent the Word? The Word will answer, He is with me and He is living inside of me. Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. In this passage, Jesus commanded His disciples to baptize In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. However, this verse of Scripture does not teach the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost are three separate Persons. Rather, it teaches the title of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost identify one name and therefore one Being. The verse expressly says, in the name (singular), not in the names (plural). In the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost Old Testament promised that there would come a time when Jehovah would have one name and that this one name would be made known: Isaiah 52:6 Therefore My people shall know My Name: therefore they shall know in that day that I am He that doth speak: behold, it is I. Jesus is the Name of the Father. John 5:43 I come in my Fathers name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. Jesus is the Name of the Son. Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Jesus is the Name of the Holy Ghost. John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom The Father will send in My name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. The Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost is JESUS CHRIST. The Apostles clearly understood this to be so, for they baptized in the name of Jesus Christ: Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the give of the Holy Ghost. Acts 8:16 For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Acts 19:5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Essence Of God

Obviously, Matthew 28:19 does not teach three persons in one God; but rather it gives three titles of God. All of which properly apply to Jesus Christ. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are all titles which correspond to a particular office and role of Jesus Christ. He is the Father in creation, the Son in redemption and the Holy Spirit in regeneration. There are many scriptures that prove that there is only One God: 1. Mark 1:24 2. Isaiah 45:11 3. Isaiah 12:6 4. Luke 4:34 5. Isaiah 47:4 6. Isaiah 37:23 7. 2 Kings 19:22 8. Isaiah 48:17 9. Isaiah 43:3 10. Psalm 71:22 11. Jeremiah 50:29 12. Isaiah 60:14 13. Psalm 78:41 14. Psalm 89:18 15.
