Philanthropy
Boston University School of Medicine takes great pleasure in recognizing the generosity of alumni, members of the Board of Visitors, parents, faculty, staff, compa-
nies, corporations, foundations, organizations, and friends. Your support has made possible the establishment and enhancement of many programs and projects at the School of Medicine. We thank you for your participation and for your vision in helping to prepare the clinicians and scientists of tomorrow. Alumni class gifts include all donations made during the fiscal year. While space constraints prevent us from listing the names of non-alumni donors of gifts under $200, we sincerely appreciate the support of those many contributors.

Dear Friends, Graduations are about past achievements and future possibilities. During Commencement this May, as I greeted and handed each graduate their diploma, I was struck by the literally thousands of Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) faculty and staff whose combined effort made that moment possible for each member of the class. Certainly their families provided the home and support that made the study and achievement required for acceptance into such a competitive profession possible. However, the richness of the Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) community, past and present, invested in these physicians and scientists is also impressive. We have almost 2,300 medical school faculty and thousands of additional staff who contribute to the education and support of our students, facilitating their development. Each of the faculty and staff in our departments and deans offices, as well as the men and women who provide snow removal, maintain the green, and serve quesadillas on Wednesdays, contributes to the education of our students. Our friends and donors also play an important role in each students development. Every person listed in this report has contributed to our graduates achievements at BUSM, as well as the accomplishments of our current and future students. Our students stories and the response of the BUSM family are inspirational. We have had students with medical issues not covered by their insurance. In one instance, I informed several faculty and donors of the issue, and within a few weeks we had not only paid for the care needed but now have a medical student emergency fund. We have discovered that some students have inadequate funds for meals; and other students have part-time jobs, not just to support themselves, but to send needed money home. BUSM is planning many ways to keep a medical or graduate health sciences education within the reach of students selected for their potential as physicians and scientists, independent of means. As many students spend hours commuting because they can no longer afford to live in the South End, we are planning expanded student housing adjacent to our campus. Access to safe, affordable housing nearby will significantly curtail travel time and expenses for many students. The medical school also needs to renovate classrooms and study areas, including the Alumni Medical Library. While both residential space and renovated facilities are expensive, these investments attract and better serve our students. BUSM continues to be a community-based teaching facility with a strong vision for the future. We continue to attract top faculty, clinicians, and researchers from around the world. With a global health perspective on learning, our students are continually exposed to new ideas, new treatments, and new ways of thinking that will ultimately shape the way they will practice medicine. While the financial burden of a medical degree can be daunting to many prospective students, BUSM is working to help students achieve their dreams with as little educational debt as possible. But the simple fact remains that a medical education is expensive. We are developing programs that will help to significantly cut down on the amount of debt faced by our graduates, allowing them to concentrate solely on their medical studies. Medicine is constantly changing, and BUSM must adapt to meet the demands of our profession. We are grateful for your generosity to BUSM and hope that you will continue to support student housing, scholarships, faculty recruiting, and classroom facilities. Please join me in thanking those listed on these pages for their leadership and support of this great institution. Sincerely,
A consistent contributor for 40 years, he established the Stanley and Catherine Konefal Student Revolving Loan Fund in 1991.

Paul and Jean Rothbaum, Davids father and mother, quickly became involved in the School, joining the Parents Committee and eventually becoming co-chairpersons, hosting BUSM events in New York, and making generous contributions. We were very happy that David was getting his medical degree from Boston University, said Paul Rothbaum, who remains just as dedicated and committed to the School to this day. The couple established a prize fund in obstetrics and gynecology in honor of their son and supported the John and Hannah Sandson Student Revolving Loan Fund out of their deep respect for John Sandson, MD, dean of BUSM when David attended. According to Mr. Rothbaum, it was his late wife who initiated their involvement in the Hubert Humphrey

Cancer Research Center at BUSM. He is currently on the National Advisory Committee of the Humphrey Center and is also a member of the Schools Board of Visitors. There is a classroom in BUSMs McNary Learning Center named in their honor to recognize their considerable generosity toward building the center. Among the many generous contributions to BUSM, the one that stands out is Pauls loving tribute to his wife, the Jean Rothbaum Memorial Scholarship Fund. More recently, Paul Rothbaum has contributed to the Aram Chobanian Professorship Fund. All three of Mr. Rothbaums sons are physicians. He attributes his childrens career choice to a strike at the Long Island Jewish Hospital when the three of them heeded the call for volunteers to keep the hospital operating. They got a taste of hospital work, and it appealed to them, he says. Like his parents, David Rothbaum often offered his time and effort to help the School. As a medical student he volunteered for the Alumni Association annual fund phonathons to raise money. When he graduated, he immediately joined the Deans Club, the giving society initiated to encourage and recognize leadership giving to the School of Medicine. In the 25 years since his graduation, he has continued his annual Deans Club contribution and now joins his parents as a member of the Chester S. Keefer, MD Society. The Keefer Society recognizes cumulative giving of more than $50,000 to BUSM. In 1986, Rothbaum opened his ob/gyn practice in Great Neck, New York, which now includes his brother. He is a clinical faculty member at Weill-Cornell Medical School and New York University School of Medicine, and is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
He has served as his class agent, has continued as a phonathon volunteer, and was president of the Alumni Association and organizer of the Class of 1982 25th Reunion this past year. In addition to supporting the Schools annual fund, David has contributed to the Sandson Student Revolving Loan Fund and the McNary Learning Center, and most recently has joined the Adopt-A-Student program, pledging to support a medical student over the course of his or her four years at BUSM. He and his wife, Melanie, have five children. Much to Davids delight, their oldest son, Robert, is enrolled in the BUSM Seven-Year Program which combines the BA and MD degrees. It is clear that the outstanding philanthropy of Paul Rothbaum and his late wife, Jean, set the example for their son, David, who is truly following in his parents generous footsteps, said Dean Karen Antman, MD. The Rothbaums gifts to the School have helped countless students realize their dream of practicing medicine, and we look forward to their continued involvement as we go forward educating and training the nations next physicians.

Dr. Strongs and Dr. Vaughans own fascination with the work they were doing and their propensity to be innovators and educators created within the department a rare sense of enthusiasm and momentum.

be forgotten by future generations of students and residents, continues Grundfast, whose other philanthropic interests include Boston Medical Center, the State University of New YorkSyracuse Medical School from which he graduated, and various Jewish organizations. Having a strong faculty is what attracts the best and brightest students and residents to the School of Medicine and BMC, states Grundfast. Contributing now is an investment in these two institutions that are tightly linked and that share lofty goals for future generations of medical practitioners. Both Dr. Strong and Dr. Vaughan helped to revolutionize the way people teach and practice otolaryngology, says BUSM Dean Karen Antman. A professorship in their names will ensure that these two medical pioneers are remembered for their many contributions to science. For more information on the M. Stuart Strong and Charles W. Vaughan Professorship in Otolaryngology or to make a gift, please contact School of Medicine Associate Vice President and Director of Development Lynn Hendricks at 617-638-4570.
I am thankful for what my mentors did for me and I want to contribute in a way that can strengthen the School of Medicine so that others can derive the benefits that I received from those who were part of the BUSM faculty.

As one of the first African-American female physicians in the city, she overcame professional obstacles without self-importance and succeeded in raising a family who adored her abundant goodness, strength, and grace, said her husband, Federal Court Judge Damon Keith. Her tendency to promote tolerance was designed to foster the higher purpose of peace and unity. At BUSM we are proud of our long history of educating women and minorities, said Dean Karen Antman, MD. And with the support of people like the Keith family and friends, we will continue this outstanding tradition. Donations to the Rachel Boone Keith Fund may be sent to: BUSM Office of Development, 715 Albany Street, L-319, Boston, MA 02118.
She dedicated her life not only to African-Americans through civil rights, but also as a pioneer for women in medicine.

Donors to the Rachel Boone Keith Fund express their admiration for this extraordinary woman: We at Butzel Long are proud to be able to provide support to deserving medical students who would follow the example set by Rachel Boone Keith when she attended the Boston University School of Medicine. In her fifty years of medical practice, Dr. Keith cared for my grandmother, Alberta Green, my mother, Lethia Green Dudley, me, and my five brothers and sisters. Needless to say, our families have grown close over the years and we were all saddened to hear of her passing. She was a truly wonderful person and an outstanding physician, and she will be missed.
-ARTHUR DUDLEY II, ESQ.
The attorney members of the WBA were deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Keith. However, we hope and pray that the monies for this permanently endowed fund will benefit future generations of African-American female students, and that they will continue Dr. Keiths commitment of serving the needs of their patients, regardless of race, gender, or ability to pay.
-DAVID B. CADE, ESQ.
Wow! What an inspiring life story. Dr. Rachel Boone Keith will surely be missed in the Detroit community.

Elementary and Middle School Students Raise Funds for BUSMs Alzheimers Disease Center
With an estimated 5.1 million Americans suffering from Alzheimers disease, this devastating neurological illness touches many families. Students in schools in East Bridgewater, Massachusetts, decided to do something to help. They have been fundraising for the past two years to support the research being done at the Alzheimers Disease Center at BUSM.
In addition to the $1,700 raised last year, members of the Laslie Family, representing the schools, recently presented a check for $3,341 from the schools Crazy Hat fundraiser to the Alzheimers Disease Advisory Board. The three Laslie girls grandfather, who suffered from Alzheimers, loved to wear hats, so the granddaughters inaugurated Crazy Hat Day at their schools, where everyone including faculty and staff joined in. Its wonderful to see young people take action to have a direct impact on what we do to fight this disease, said Robert Stern, PhD, associate professor of neurology and co-director of the Alzheimers Disease Clinical and Research Program at BUSM.
Cassie, Alexa, and Kandyse Laslie present a check to Robert C. Green, MD, co-director of the Alzheimers Disease Clinical and Research Program and professor of neurology, genetics and epidemiology; Carlos Kase, MD, professor and chairman of the Department of Neurology; Carmela Abraham, PhD, professor of biochemistry and medicine; Karen Antman, MD, dean and provost; Michael Critelli, chairman of the Alzheimers Advisory Board and executive chairman of Pitney Bowes; and Robert A. Stern, PhD, co-director of the Alzheimers Disease Clinical and Research Program and associate professor of neurology.
Stern, wearing his own crazy hat, spoke to the 1,000 students about the disease during the May 4, 2007, event at the Gordon W. Mitchell Middle School in East Bridgewater. He recalls, One of the striking things about my visit to the school was when I asked the students to raise their hands if they had someone close to them with Alzheimers disease. One half of the students put their hands up.
The goal of the Alzheimers Disease Center at BUSM is to help reduce the human and economic costs associated with Alzheimers disease through the advancement of knowledge and increasing awareness of the illness. The Alzheimers Disease Advisory Board, initiated in 2003, helps raise funds for Alzheimers disease research at BUSM through personal philanthropy, outreach, and volunteer efforts.

Everyone at BUSM and on the Board of Visitors is passionate about educating physicians and supporting medical research, and I am proud to be a part of that important tradition.
JOHN I. POLK, MD 74
As a member of the Board of Visitors, I have enjoyed the opportunity to meet both faculty and students, and I was pleased that my contacts at Cognia Molecular resulted in a contribution to the Genetics and Genomics Department. Establishing and developing these contacts for the School are important and one of the reasons that I joined the board. Through my meetings with students, I have come to understand some of the unique challenges they face. As a result, my wife and I decided to establish the Special Medical Needs Fund to provide financial help for certain medical needs not covered by disability services or student medical insurance. My involvement and ability to help support the School of Medicine have been very gratifying.
SHERRY M. LEVENTHAL
I will be forever grateful to the faculty, staff, and patients who all contributed to my wonderful experience as a student at the School of Medicine. My donations to the School enable todays students to have a similar experience, and I hope they too will be grateful and continue this spirit of philanthropy.
One of our daughters is in her third year at BUSM, and the other graduated in May. As parents, my husband, Alan, and I have witnessed firsthand the excellence in medical education provided by BUSM as our daughters transform from eager college students to compassionate, skillful physicians. We are proud to support this outstanding institution.

Over the many years that Ive worked for BUSM, I have given annuallynot because anyone made me feel it was expected, but rather because I felt a strong commitment to the special mission of the School in training physicians to care for poor, urban populations and providing health care access to all. Ive felt especially fortunate to work closely with Deans John Sandson and Aram Chobanian on issues to which I personally relate: the need to reduce medical student debts, the importance of federal funding to continue the excellence of BUSMs research enterprise, and the understanding that the political process is necessary to achieving the Schools goals.

I consistently contribute to BUSM because I am forever grateful for the educational experience that I received. It is clear to me every day that the medical school prepared me well for the ever-changing landscape of medicine. As a surgical residency program director, I review more than a thousand applications and interview dozens of applicants. The graduates from BUSM are more prepared than graduates from any other medical school due to the diverse and carefully planned experiences provided to BUSM students. I owe my professional success to Boston University.

Boston University was a strong foundation to base a lifetime of learning upon. Both my wife and I, having been in the real world, truly appreciate our education. Providing support for such a foundation for future generations of BU graduates is an essential factor in preserving the legacy of BU and its alumni.

We feel that our BU medical education has been a major contributor to our accomplishments thus far in life. Further, we have had the opportunity to work with medical students from over a dozen medical schools, and we continue to note that BU students have superior clinical skills. For these reasons, we feel that it is our privilege, not only to give back to the medical school that started our careers, but to provide our help to an institution that will continue to educate outstanding physicians.
