Image Artifacts - Vertical

Vertical artifacts are caused by the translation module.

14” x 17” Film

Cross Track Banding (Vertical Banding)

Do not replace the optics module for this type of artifact.
1. If the bands are spaced at regular intervals, approximately 4 mm apart, replace the capstan-
motor-mount assembly (part SP96-0000-5458-3).
2. Verify that the optics module can move freely throughout its full range and that no obstructions
are impeding the travel of the optics module.
3. Check that the gray ribbon cable has the proper amount of slack.
4. Carefully clean the translation rails.
5. If vertical artifacts persist, replace the translation module assembly (part SP8E8757).

Image Artifacts - Horizontal

Horizontal artifacts are caused by the optics module.

14” x 17” Film

Horizontal Lines
1. The most likely cause of horizontal lines is debris on the L3 flex lens.
2. If the optics module is equipped with a magnetic-access front cover, try to remove the
debris from the flex lens using compressed air.
3. If the horizontal line(s) persist, then carefully clean the flex lens with cleaning kit
SP7F6028, following the instructions in the video on the CD.
4. If the line(s) persist after cleaning the flex lens, replace the optics module:
 For the 8100/8200 LASER IMAGERS, order part SP8E7340.
 For the KELI-160 LASER IMAGER, order part SP8E7338.

Invalid Power Monitor Range

1. Check the ribbon cables to the optics module, connections (especially in the bend area inside the platen),
interlock, and +/- 12V supply.
2. Obtain the powerMonitorAttenOpen value from the Gray Scale Manager Error Log. This value can be
found at “Service Tool/Diagnostics/Error Logs/Gray Scale Manager”. The normal operating range is 2492 –
3950.
A. If the powerMonitorAttenOpen value is below 2492, open the optics module and inspect the folding
mirror for debris. Carefully clean the folding and spinner mirrors with cleaning kit SP7F6028, following
the instructions in the video on the CD.
– If the powerMonitorAttenOpen value is above 3950 for 8100/8200 , proceed as follows:
(For KELI-160, go to step 3.)
 Issue the command optics eepot –100 using the methods described on pages 13-14.
 Wait for two minutes and cycle the power.
 If the equipment is Ready or issues a 604 Error, perform a laser dynamic range adjustment.
 Cycle the power.
 Run a calibration by following the procedure in the appropriate Service Manual.
3. If problem persists, replace the optics module:
 For the 8100/8200 LASER IMAGERS, order part SP8E7340.
 For the KELI-160 LASER IMAGER, order part SP8E7338.

Invalid Laser Dynamic Range

1. Check the ribbon cables to the optics module and cable connections, especially in the bend area
inside the platen.
2. Launch MPC.
3. Adjust the laser dynamic range. Follow the procedure in the appropriate Service Manual.
4. Run calibration.
5. If the laser dynamic range is -1, the laser is not on. Check for the following:
 The service switch in the service position
 An open door
 An open interlock
6. If three consecutive adjustments each yield a result of -1, replace the optics module:
 For the 8100/8200 LASER IMAGERS, order part SP8E7340.
 For the KELI-160 LASER IMAGER, order part SP8E7338.

Translation Assembly Did Not Return to Home Position

Do not replace the optics module for this problem.
1. Verify that the optics home sensor (on translation base near brass flywheel) is not obstructed.
2. Inspect the associated cable for damage and verify that the connector is plugged into the sensor.
3. Verify that the optics module can move freely throughout its full range.
4. The “Sensors” page of the “Diagnostics” section of the Service Tool should indicate On when the
optics module is positioned at the end of the translation module assembly nearest the flywheel.
5. If the problem persists, replace the translation module assembly (part SP8E8757).

Error Code P641 or 7342

P641 (8100/8200 LASER IMAGERS) 7342 (KELI-160 LASER IMAGER)
NVRAM Failure
1. Check cables and connections, especially in the bend area inside the platen.
2. For 8100/8200, read NVRAM stored values using methods described on pages 13-14. Enter the following
commands:
 optics rps (reads pixel stretch value, should be 0 – 65535)
 optics rmid (reads mirror facet id, should be 0 or 1)
 optics rsd (reads SOS delay value, should be 0 – 255)
 optics rsn (reads serial number, should be 0 – 65535)
For KELI-160, use MPC Diagnostics, Configuration/Optics Configuration to verify the values as above (KELI does not
store the Optics Serial Number).
Note: If any values are missing, they must be rewritten to NVRAM.
For 8100/8200, enter the following commands, using the actual value in place of the word value.
For example: optics wps 30000.
 optics wps value (Pixel Stretch – if value unknown, enter 30000)
 optics wmid value (Mirror Facet ID – if value unknown, enter 0))
 optics wsd value (SOS Delay – if value unknown, enter 140)
 optics wsn value (Optics Serial Number – if unknown, enter 1)
For KELI 160, if one or more values are missing, run the appropriate adjustment procedure from the same screen.
3. Wait at least 2 minutes, then power cycle the equipment.
4. Run calibration.
5. If the problem persists, replace the optics module:
 For the 8100/8200 LASER IMAGERS, order part SP8E7340.
 For the KELI-160 LASER IMAGER, order part SP8E7338.

Data Over-run or Under-run to Optics Module

1. Check the ribbon cables to the optics module and connections, especially in the bend area inside the
platen.
2. Possible causes, in order of decreasing likelihood, are:
 MCS
 IMS
 8100/8200 LASER IMAGERS (part SP8E7340), KELI-160 LASER IMAGER (part SP8E7338).
The optics module is the least likely to cause this error.
