Welcome to a New Era

by CCU President Simon Rawlence

his newsletter I think will be a symbol of Czech Cricket for a long time in the future, and I am very pleased to contribute a few words to this first new issue. 2011 in England signified an era of change with the test side becoming the ICC number one test team. Here in the Czech Republic similar changes were afoot and it would appear we have a new era for Czech Cricket. A new ground was christened at Vinor, a new constitution was agreed, and a new management structure has been introduced. New faces have committed to their involvement in driving Czech cricket forward. The involvement of some successful and dynamic local business leaders (both Czech and ex-patriot) can only help CCU achieve its mission statements. Everything is now looking to the future and there is a new momentum that we badly needed to develop cricket in this country.

Flagshipevent
The National Teams participation in the European Division 3 Tournament in Slovenia this summer was a flagship event for all who take an interest in Czech cricket. Home-bred young Czech players who had come up through schools coaching, junior participation, and

then adult leagues, represented their country for the first time. I think we should be justly proud of this achievement. My favourite photo from the tournament was of such a young Czech cricketer being pestered for autographs from female spectators. A new programme of Czech schools training will be rolled out in 2012 to add to the Prague schools already teaching cricket and competing in a junior indoor tournament. This is where our future lies, but we need structures and vehicles such as this Newsletter to spread the good news, and we also need the support of every member of the CCU to work towards common goals.

Inaugural T20 League

Vinohrady CC claimed the inaugural T20 league title with a 4-wicket win over Prague CC. PCC were restricted to 121-8 in their 20 overs, as all Vinohrady bowlers chipped in with wickets. Prague's wickets all fell to catches as Vinohrady fielded impressively, with Mike Gates taking 3 catches and Leigh Tozer two caught-andbowled wickets. Tarique Choudry and Louis Aitcheson made a great start to the run-chase, before PCC Continued on Page 2

British Embassy game The Annual Ambassadors Day

unny Vypich welcomed both teams to the well prepared and rolled second pitch , which played better than ever before. For the match a social boundary of only 40 yards had been marked out. Bohemians generously gave the Embassy the choice without a toss and the Embassy put the Bohemians in to bat first. A convincing spell by the Embassy opening bowlers Andrew Dennison and Sean Morrissey held the score to 22 for 3. Then the big hitters came in and anything "social" about the boundary was left in shreds! Chris Pearce and finally Manjeet Malik scored a succession of sixes into the trees to take the final score to 133 for 7. The high hitting was not without some chances for the fielding side and some rare catches were taken, the most spectacular of which was Mike Moon's high catch over his head that took his celebratory whoop of success well over the boundary line. Nevertheless Mike was later awarded the Catch of the Continued on Page 3

captain Prakash Sadasivan took four wickets. But Hugo Banks and captain Vojta Hasa steered Vinohrady home with 20 balls to spare.

Prague CC take revenge

Prague CC took their revenge and claimed the Pro40 league for the fourth consecutive year with a 6-wicket win over Vinohrady. The longer format should've seen more runs but a difficult pitch and some inspired bowling from Prakash and Louis restricted the scoring. Vinohrady batted first and were 29-1 after 10 overs before Prakash took a three-wicket maiden in the 11th over. Wickets fell regularly as Vinohrady chased the game, but opener Ben Soucek survived and top-scored with 28 before being last man out in Vinohrady's total of 70. Prakash finished with

4-9, but Louis responded with 4-10 in his 8 overs as PCC's top order struggled. Sudhir Gladson and Suditha Udugalage steadied the ship and their unbeaten partnership of 42 guided PCC home with 12.3 overs to spare. nThe CMKS would like to thank PCC, Vinohrady and all the players from Barbarians, Bohemian, Brno, Dejvice Cosmos and Dresden for making 2011 a successful season.

Match and presented with a new ball by the Bohemians captain Manjeet. Mention must also be made of the the Embassy supporters: Wives and children turning up in numbers , Sian McCleod, British Ambassador, at the head of the Cheerleaders and Richard Robinson ably in charge of a makeshift scoreboard. A leisurely lunch of barbecued meat and cool beer followed, as usual provided by the female lovelies of the Royal Air Force Farnborough rescue

team under the command of Captain Hugo Banks. Embassy took to the field and the openers of Mike Moon and John Gus Ferguson eased themselves in. A sluggish start soon saw Mike dismissed. Gus lasted just 5 more overs and despite ticking over the Embassy team were well behind the run rate. Steve Ridgill and Roger Dunlop steadied the innings and moved the score on. Sadly following their dismissals and a reasonable resistance

from token colonial, Matt babe ruth Garza, and Andrew Boycott Dennison Embassy limped to a final score of 90 all out. As usual it was a great day with friends old and new on hand, and thanks go to Mike Moon at the Embassy, Simon Rawlence and Hugo Banks for their help and organisation, Gus and Dejvice Cosmos for supplying extra bodies, and finally to everyone that turned up and made the day so enjoyable.

squeeze out runs at the end to finish with 85 all out. Two early wickets each from Eric Walker and Prakash slowed the Lions down and despite a middle-order rebuild, the Lions came up four runs short on 81 all out. Young Czech Oliver Matousek took off the bails for the last-wicket run-out to spark celebrations for the Eagles.
