Greenberg-Starr Memory Center Offers Wide-Ranging Fitness Program

It is the Greenberg-Starr Memory Centers mission to bring healthy lifestyle possibilities to all in residence. Our latest phase of program development is the introduction of fitness programming to the Resident Activity Calendar. With the invaluable support and skill of the Nursing, Rehabilitation and Therapeutic Activities Departments, Memory Center residents enjoy a daily complement of physical activity including fitness walks, strength training, low impact exercise, bicycling, Yoga, and massage therapy. Exercise is a vital component of physical and brain health whether young or older, whether in the presence or absence of Alzheimers disease. Fitness walking tours are led by a Certified Nurses Aide, who joins residents in viewing art work and testing their wit at wall-mounted activity boards to build upon brain ability and motor skills. During strength training sessions, residents fortify and re-connect with their physical ability through performing a range of low impact exercises. Of late, Massage Therapy has joined the fitness roster, with a licensed Massage Therapist bringing relaxation and healing to residents challenged by age and Alzheimers. Through the powers of gentle touch, residents visibly recognize and respond to healing hands and find renewed harmony within themselves.

Hurricane Irene
The Hebrew Home staff kept a watchful eye on the path of Hurricane Irene in late August. Weather disturbances and the accompanying challenges they create are the subject of extensive planning and training that staff undergo on a regular basis. The Home offered a safe haven to its colleagues at the Menorah Nursing Home in Coney Island where 20 residents and staff spent three days at the Home.

Menorah NH staff pose for a picture with the HHAR clinical leadership as the buses were about to leave to take them home.

Sculpture Hit by Tornado Reinstalled

Menashe Kadishmans Sacrifice of Isaac was reinstalled this summer after it was severely damaged in the devastating tornado in July 2010. The central component of the three-part sculpture, a two-ton steel rams head was damaged when a tree toppled on it, nearly bending it in half. The work is part of a collection of more than three-dozen outdoor sculptures on the Homes 19-acre campus. The collection is open to the public daily, free of charge, from 10:30 a.m. 4:30 p.m. For further information, please call the curators office 718 581-1330.
