OCS is licensed through a Server and CAL (Client Access License) model and so customers should purchase a Server license for each server, and CALs for either users or devices. OCS offers different levels of functionality with corresponding CALs. The core functionality such as the instant messaging functionality (depicted by the blue shading) is linked to a Standard CAL (depicted by the blue license) assigned to a user or device. If the advanced functionality such as the Web conferencing and voice/telecom integration (depicted by the red shading) is required, the purchase of an Enterprise CAL is required (depicted by the red license) in addition to the Standard CAL.
EXTERNAL USERS
For OCS 2007, Standard and Enterprise External Connector licenses are available to cover external users. Note that for OCS 2007 R2, external users can attend an OCS 2007 R2 Web conference without a CAL or External Connector.
Standard and Enterprise server licenses for OCS are available. The Enterprise edition is recommended for organizations with more than 250 users since it offers extra support for scalability and availability, but either server license can be used with Standard and Enterprise CALs.
To enable users to communicate with people using Windows Live or AOL instant messaging tools, either SA on the CALs is required or an Office Live Communications Server Public Instant Messaging Connectivity (PIC) User Subscription License*. A PIC is always required to allow users to communicate with Yahoo! instant messaging. Users can communicate with Google Talk with no additional licensing requirement.
For any business wanting to license 5 or more users, they can do so through an Open Value agreement or the Microsoft Online Subscription Program (MOSP) which is covered in a separate reference document. Larger organizations can choose between purchasing through MOSP or a Select or Enterprise Agreement.
The Office Live Meeting online service is available as a Standard or Professional license: Office Live Meeting Standard provides a meeting capacity of up to 250 participants Office Live Meeting Professional provides a meeting capacity of up 1,250 participants with unlimited storage of shared meeting recordings for 360 days Both editions require each internal user to have a USL (User Subscription License)*. No licenses are required for external participants. Note that the device providing conference phone and 360-degree camera is a separate purchase.
* A USL (User Subscription License) is required to enable the functionality of an online service for a particular user Microsoft Office Communications Server Home Page: office.microsoft.com/communicationsserver Licensing information on the Microsoft Partner Network: https://partner.microsoft.com/global/licensing
