FRIT 7430- Instructional Design Learner Analysis Assignment

For this assignment you will be conducting a thorough learner analysis, which is an essential component for the design of instruction. To complete this assignment, you will need to select a group of learners that are representative of the target learners for the goal/standard that you have selected. You must have a group of 8 or more learners. You will complete a description of the learners using the characteristics that were described in class presentations, readings, and discussions. You need to determine a strategy (survey, questionnaire, interview, etc) to analyze your learners and include the data from your analysis. Your report must include the sections listed below: Introduction Demographics Entry Skills & Prior Knowledge Academic Motivation Motivational Strategies Educational and Ability Levels Learner Characteristics Accommodations References Appendix The data from the learners also needs to be submitted. You can submit electronic copies of the data or you can scan in the original data that you collected from the learners.

Report Section Descriptions

Introduction In the Introduction section include a brief (one paragraph) description of the learning environment that served as the context for your learner analysis. For example, you will include the type of school (public, private, elementary, etc.). Or you will indicate the place where the learning is taking place, if you are not in PK-12 education or higher education. Also list your instructional goal or standard that you will be using for this class project. Demographics Summarize the demographic information you collect regarding your learners. You may do this in narrative form, if you like. You might find that a brief introduction with the data summarized in a table or tables will make the best presentation for this section. It is not appropriate to duplicate the data shown in a table with narrative text. Text and a table should complement each other, not duplicate each other. If you create a survey to collect this information, list the survey in an appendix. If you collect this data from reports or information already available to you, simply explain where you obtained the data. Entry Skills & Prior Knowledge List your learners' educational and ability levels as they pertain to your selected goal/standard. The best strategy for this section is probably a summary paragraph with a table showing details for each learner. Again, if you create a survey or test to collect this information, list the survey in an appendix. If you collect this data from reports or information already available to you, simply explain where you obtained the data. Academic Motivation Learner Analysis 2 of 6

Describe your learners' motivation toward the goal or standard you have selected. You may choose to interview or survey your learners to obtain this information. However, if you can explain the motivation in a narrative form, that is acceptable. If the content in this section is based on your experience as an educator, indicate that fact. If you create a survey or interview questions to collect this information, list the survey in an appendix. Motivational Strategies Describe motivational strategies you will use to address motivational challenges identified in the preceding section. Your strategies should be described in the context of John Keller's ARCS model for motivation. Use the ARCS categories and general language when you describe your strategies. Learner Characteristics Identify a broad range of learner characteristics and include supporting data from the target learners. You may list any characteristics, which you feel are important. You must include data from your learners on Gardner's multiple intelligences. You must describe how culture and/or ethnicity might influence the target learners, task, and learning situation. This is also where you will need to include three, original research articles to support the strategies that you are going to use to meet your learners needs in terms of their culture and ethnicity. If you create a survey or test to collect this information, list the survey in an appendix. If you collect this data from reports or information already available to you, simply explain where you obtained the data. Accommodations In this section you will identify specific appropriate accommodations for learners with special needs. You will analyze and recommend appropriate technology resources to enable and empower learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities for the given learning situation. Learner Analysis 3 of 6

The accommodations you list must be accepted practice in the field of education and cannot be based on your own experience. This is also where you will need to include three, original research articles to support the strategies that you are going to use to meet your learners needs in terms of their special needs. Note that blogs and personal web pages are not credible references.

References List references in this section to books, articles, websites, etc. that you use to support other parts of this document. Throughout the document, you need to use intext citations so that I know where you have used your references. The reference list should follow APA Style. You can see examples of APA Style here: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/05/ Near the bottom of that page you will find links to specific examples for how to reference books, articles, electronic sources (e.g. websites), etc. Appendices Use this section as needed to list data, surveys, tests, etc.

Before submitting your work be sure to copy and paste the scoring rubric below into your document. Also check your document against the scoring rubric so that you get the most points possible.

Scoring Rubric for Learner Analysis

Learners 0 Selected a group of learners that is not an appropriate target sample 3 Selected a group of learners that is appropriate; sample size is less than or equal to 8 Identifies demographics of learners 1 Identifies differences, but does not use Gardner's MI theory. 5 Selected a group of learners that is an appropriate target audience for the selected Standard/Goal and contains sufficient number of learners (8 or more). Identifies a broad range of learner characteristics and includes supporting data from the target learners. 2 Utilizes Gardner's multiple intelligences to describe learners' intelligence preferences and strengths; includes instrument and original data from students. 2 Identifies special needs of learners. Cites at least 3 references for specific methods of meeting learners' needs. 2 Describes how culture and/or ethnicity might influence target learners Cites at least 3 references for specific methods of meeting the needs of learners of different cultural and/or ethnic backgrounds. 2 Includes motivation information and strategies for motivation Uses ARCS terminology or structure 2 Score
