Distinguish between traditional design approach and Mechatronics approach. Discuss how digital signal processing can be used in noise filtering. Design a summing amplifier circuit that can be used to produce an output that ranges from -1 to -5v. When the input undergoes from 0 to 100mv. A flat belt, 7mm thick and 95mm wide transmits power between two pulleys running at 1500m/min. The mass of the belt is 0.85kg/m. length. The angle of lap in the smaller pulley is 155 and the coefficient of friction between the belt and pulley is 0.25. If the maximum permissible stress in the belt is 2MN/m2. Find the maximum power transmitted and initial tension in the belt. Explain the working principle of stepper motor in half step mode. How many types of configurations are there in Bipolar transistors? Explain any one. What are the factors to be considered for selecting solenoids? Consider a solenoid actuator in which a current passing through the solenoid results in movement of a rod actuator into or out of the solenoid. Propose models for the arrangement which could then be used to develop a differential equation relating the input of current to the output of displacement. Discuss how AND, OR NOR and NAND systems can be formed with ladder diagram. Sketch a ladder diagram and explain for pressure alarm. Alarm should be sounded if a sensor indicates the pressure above 2 bar and remain sounding until the pressure falls below 1 bar. What is the objective of the engine management system, and explain its working with a block diagram. *****

A differential amplifier has a differential voltage gain of 2000 and a common mode gain of 0.2. What is the common mode rejection ratio in dB? Digital signals from a sensor are polluted by noise and mains interference and are typically of the order of 100v or more. Explain how protection can be afforded for a microprocessor to which these signals are to be inputted. Discuss about the following actuation systems. List the various static and dynamic characteristics of the systems. Explain any two in-details. What is the resolution of an analog-to digital converter with a word length of 12bits and an analog signal input range of 100v? Explain about filtering noise using passive components. Explain how a sequential valve can be used to initiate an operation only when another operation has been completed. An actuator has a stem movement which at full travel is 40mm. It is mounted with a linear plug process control valve which has a minimum flow rate of 0 and a maximum flow rate of 0.20m3/s. What will be the flow rate when the stem movement is (i) 10mm (ii) 20 mm. Explain the buffer ICs. What are the different protection schemes in buffering ICs? Explain about TTL in electronic interfaces. Derive a differential equation relating the input voltage to a d.c servo motor and the output angular velocity, assuming that the motor is armature controlled and the equivalent circuit for the motor has an armature with just resistance, its inductance being neglected. Explain how the shift register can be used to sequence the event with a neat diagram. Devise a circuit that can be used to start a motor and then after a delay of 100s start a pump. When the motor is switched off there should be a delay of 10s before the pump is switched off. Design a pick and place robot using mechatronics elements and explain about the robot control. *****

(ii) a closed loop system. Identify the various elements that might be present in a control system involving a thermostatically controlled electric heater. The output from the differential pressure sensor used with an orifice plate for the measurement of flow rate is non-linear, the output voltage being proportional to the square of the flow rate. Determine the form of characteristic required for the element in the feedback loop of an operational amplifier signal conditioner circuit in order to linearise this output. (a) A hydraulic cylinder is to be used to move a work piece in a manufacturing operation through a distance of 50mm in 10s. A force of 10KN is required to move the work piece. Determine the working pressure and hydraulic liquid flow if a cylinder with a piston diameter of 100mm is available. Explain the specifications of a stepper motor in detail. What is MOSFET? Stable its fractures. What is thermal dissipation? Explain about any three sensors used for temperature measurement. Derive differential equations for a permanent magnet d.c. motor. Explain about pulse width modulation. A microprocessor uses eight address lines for accessing memory. What is the maximum number of memory locations that can be addressed? How does a micro controller differ from a microprocessor? Devise a system, using a PLC that could be used with a conveyor belt which is used to move an item to work station. The pressure of the item at the workstation is detected by means of breaking a contact activated by a beam of light to a photosensor. There it stops for 100sec for an operation to be carried out and them starts moving. The motor for the belt is started by a normally open start switch and stopped by a normally closed switched. With a neat sketch of circuit diagram, explain the working of PID controller. Explain in detail the different types of optical encoders with suitable diagrams. *****
