Some people want to lose weight while others vow to get their homes, finances and lives in order. One primary resolution for those still using drugs is that they will stop. For those who have it is commendable and they can then move on to other resolutions. Whatever your resolution is, it is important to take the necessary steps to make sure you can keep it. Starting a New Year can be a big part of the new life of recovery you have been working on. If you or someone you know is struggling with a drug or alcohol addiction contact Narconon Arrowhead today at 800468-6933 or visit us at www.stopaddiction.com. fb NOW HERES A TIP By JoAnn Derson I put out small candy dishes in my home, and I like to keep them filled with goodies throughout the year. When I have little children over, I put them up high and let parents know that they and the children are welcome to have as much as they like. The parents appreciate this, as the children sometimes like to overindulge. -- D.A. in Rhode Island

NOW HERES A TIP By JoAnn Derson I have to wear my hair tied back for work. With all the ponytails, I get lots of little broken hairs that stick up all over my head when its very dry or very humid -- especially when I go from a wet, yucky outside to a dry, heated inside. I have tried lots of styling products that dont work very well. Then a co-worker suggested a fabric-softener sheet. I cant believe it, but it works. -- P.G. in Michigan If you have an ink stain on fabric, try blotting it with hairspray. Saturate the ink spot with hairspray, and blot using a clean white cloth or non-decorated paper towel. Repeat until all the ink is gone. Make sure you test on an inconspicuous area first. For every degree you lower your thermostat during the heating season, you generally reduce your energy costs by 3 percent. Also, turn down the temperature setting on your hot-water heater. Heres a no-fail strategy for raking up leaves: Rake leaves into a single long line, preferably onto a sidewalk. Then turn a large garbage can on its side and sweep the leaf pile into the can, taking breaks to empty leaves into bags as needed. The raking goes much quicker when done in stripes. And bagging is faster as well. I have one of those big wall calendars for work. When the year is over, the kids like to cut up the months into bingo cards. They use stickers to create both the bingo cards and the pullers cards (the individual days and the different kinds of stickers). Its a fun craft that uses their brain cells -- and recycles the paper calendar. -- Y.R. in Arizona Send your tips to Now Heres a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. HEART PUBLICATIONS:
(Straight from The Fathers Heart to YOU!) Part VIII: WE WOULD TO SEE JESUS, THE CHRIST, OF NAZARETH! John 12:20-26 (AMP) We would to SEE JESUS was the inquiry of some Greeks..and, Jesus, answered saying, Except a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies it remains by itself, ALONE. But, if it dies, it PRODUCES MANY OTHERS AND YIELDS A RICH HARVEST. Whats JESUS saying here? Lets start at the beginning. IN THE BEGINNING GOD SAID: Genesis 1:26 (AMP) Let US (The Triunal Godhead - Father, Son, Holy Spirit) make MAN IN OUR IMAGE AND AFTER OUR LIKENESS and let them have COMPLETE AUTHORITY over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the beasts, and over all the earth and over everything that creeps upon the earth. ORIGINALLY, Adam walked with God in the cool of the day. THEY COMMUNED AND FLOWED AS ONE WITH GOD IN BOTH THE SPIRITUAL (INVISIBLE) AND THE NATURAL (VISIBLE) REALM OF LIFE. ORIGINALLY, THEY WERE CLOTHED IN THE GLORY OF GOD - HIS CLOUD OF RADIANT LIGHT. In Genesis 3 is the story of how Eve was deceived/tricked by satan into DISOBEYING GODS COMMAND; and Adam, right beside her, NOT DECEIVED, CHOSE ALSO TO DISOBEY GOD, CAUSING THE GLORY OF GOD TO DEPART them both. Thats when they SAW they were naked and became AFRAID and HID FROM GOD..(Genesis 3:9). They GAVE THE DEVIL their POSITION of rulership over all the earth; AND THEY GAVE RULERSHIP OVER THEMSELVES TO THE DEVIL CORRUPTING THEIR THINKING & FEELINGS BY BELIEVING HIS LIES OVER GODS TRUTH SPOKEN. THUS, FALLEN HUMANITY WAS BIRTHED! WE CANNOT FIX OR SAVE OURSELVES! TO SEE JESUS, WE MUST REPENT OF THE CORRUPT/DISTORED NATURE SATAN SEEDED INTO ADAM & EVE THAT WE INHERITED THROUGH THEM..TO SEE JESUS WE MUST REPENT of the HORRIBLE SIN of CALLING GOD A LIAR & CALLING THE DEVILS LIES THE TRUTH. WE THEN MUST ASK FOR GODS HEADSHIP IN JESUS OF NAZARETH TO BE GIVEN US! Acts 13:38, 39 (AMP)...THROUGH this MAN (JESUS OF NAZARETH, OUR SAVIOR AND LORD) FORGIVENESS AND REMOVAL OF SIN IS NOW PROCLAIMED TO YOU. ...THROUGH HIM EVERYONE WHO BELIEVES is ABSOLVED from every charge from which he could not be JUSTIFIED AND FREED by the LAW of Moses and GIVEN RIGHT STANDING WITH GOD.

November 16, 2011(FHTNC)- Navy Seaman Recruit ZACHARIAH D. MANNING, son of Darlene and David P. Manning of Port Allegany, Pa., recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Manning completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is Battle Stations. This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. Battle Stations is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly Navy flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor. Manning is a 2011 graduate of Port Allegany High School of Port Allegany, Pa. f
COSTS KEEP GOING UP ARE YOU PREPARED? Many people have likely experienced sticker shock this year as prices increased significantly at the gas pump and the grocery store. Consumers have no choice but to pay up, but rising costs can be a big challenge during retirement. Future retirees will be forced to dig deeper into their savings to maintain their desired lifestyle, or may have to simply cut back in order to make ends meet. The recent uptick in the cost of living is a reminder that life gets more expensive over time. This is important to keep in mind as you plan for your retirement. For retirees who are in good health, life after leaving the workforce could extend on for two or three decades. Adjust your goals accordingly. If you anticipate a lengthy retirement, it is important to recognize that the loss of purchasing power will be one of the most critical risks to overcome. Even if the annual cost of living average increases at a modest rate of 3 percent during your retirement, your living expenses will theoretically double in less than 25 years. Many preparing for retirement make the mistake of assuming that the income they will need to meet their living expenses in the first year of retirement will be consistent throughout their lives. To determine a more precise estimate, you must inflate your income need each year. For example, if you estimated a retirement income need of $50,000 per year for 30 years, that would indicate total anticipated spending of $1,500,000. But if you assume that inflation will boost living costs by 3 percent per year (from the first years income need of $50,000), the

COLLECTING By Larry Cox Rare Cookbook Q: My mom grew up in Soulard, a neighborhood in St. Louis. During the early 1930s, she met Irma S. Rombauer, who, with her daughter Marion, was compiling a new cookbook, The Joy of Cooking. It was published in 1931, and my mother was given a signed first edition. I have often wondered about its value and wonder if you can help me. Is this just another cookbook, or do I have something really special? I am a professional cook and often use the cookbooks later editions, especially the one published in 1962. -- Susan, Wheatridge, Colo. A: Take off your apron and sit down, because I have some rather startling news for you. First, let me provide you with a little background about The Joy of Cooking, one of the most significant cookbooks in American history. Irma and Marion Rombauer lived in the Compton Heights neighborhood of St. Louis, and even though neither woman had much experience in the kitchen, Irmas husband committed suicide, which made it necessary for the two women to find a way they could support themselves. Irma gathered recipes, and her daughter illustrated them. The first edition had a definite German-American flavor, which reflected their neighborhood. The editions that followed made The Joy of Cooking a national bestseller, and many consider it one of the better cookbooks ever. And now for the good part. Are you sitting down, Susan? Since so few copies of the first edition exist, your signed copy is probably worth about $5,000, perhaps more at auction. The 1936 edition is valued in the $140 to $250 range, and the 1962 edition (which I also like and use), goes for $30 to $50, depending on condition. Another popular edition is the one issued in 1943 because of its sugarless recipes, necessary because of war rationing. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Hours are Monday Thursday 7:30 a.m. - 11 p.m., Friday 7:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., Saturday 1 - 7 p.m., and Sunday 1 - 11 p.m. The show is open to the public free of charge. The library will host a reception open to the public on Monday, Nov. 21, from 4-6 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. As part of the exhibit, Alfred State College has included the story of one of its own, US Army veteran Joe Greenthal, ASC Class of 2009, payment services assistant at ASC, whose story is included among the permanent stories in the collection. Here I was, 20 years old, headed to Iraq, and responsible for five other soldiers who would look to me for answers to questions Id never been asked. Despite my training and the certificates attesting to my proficiency, I didnt feel prepared to face what lay ahead. In retrospect, Joe believes that no amount of training could truly prepare him for his experiences in the Middle East. For more on Greenthals experience, visit the exhibit. The birth of the exhibit began in fall 2008, when Western Nevada College sociology Professor Don Carlson was stopped in his tracks by The New York Times Roster of the Dead. Four thousand faces of American military who had perished in Iraq stared at me, he said, and I realized that

this war has been perhaps one of the most impersonal wars ever fought. The heart of Always Lost is the Wall of the Dead: individual photographs with names of the more than 6,200 US military war casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan since Sept. 11, 2001. Always Lost is committed to keeping the memorial wall current in honor of those who gave their lives and those who made it home. Installed at Western Nevada College Carson City in spring 2009, the original exhibit generated an overwhelming response. One guest book comment read, A national treasure. By word-of-mouth, the story of Always Lost began to spread, and inquiries came from across the country. The Nevada Arts Council, a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts, awarded WNC a grant to support the project and reformat it as a traveling exhibit. Always Lost made its national debut at the University of Wisconsin-Marinette in fall 2010 and is scheduled to tour other venues through mid-2013. WNC dreams of sending Always Lost to all 50 states. In spring 2011, US Senators Harry Reid and Dean
Heller jointly expressed support of the project and invited the exhibition to Washington, DC. A generous donation by a longtime local business, the Carson Nugget, through its Community First initiative, made it possible to replicate the exhibition for our nations capital. Always Lost has evolved into a powerful meditation on the effects of war on each of us. It has become a sacred space in which to contemplate the personal costs and collective sacrifice of these particular conflicts, and consequently, of all wars. In the meantime, casualties continue to mount, and the Wall of the Dead continues to grow. fb NOW HERES A TIP By JoAnn Derson I feel the following is the best way to remove lint from the trap on my dryer. After completion of the drying cycle, take the used Bounce dryer sheet and swipe the screen. Then throw it into the wastebasket, located next to the dryer. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Paul G. Donohue, M.D. Humans Can Sprout New Blood Vessels DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I don't remember you addressing this subject, so I thought I would write. In 1997, I had a mild heart attack and went on medicines. Six months later I had another mild incident that led me to angioplasty. Ever since, I have been eating well, exercising and taking all my meds. My cardiologist says I have great collaterals. I have sprouted new vessels for my heart. I thought I should have some kind of intervention, but the doctor says no. Can you discuss autogenesis? Am I related to a starfish? -- R.S. ANSWER: You're the first writer ever to use the word "autogenesis." If a starfish loses an arm, it grows another -- autogenesis. Humans have the same ability when it comes to blood vessels. They can grow new ones, and do so in many instances. Heart-attack victims often can sprout new arteries. It's a long process. It doesn't happen overnight. And it doesn't happen to all people. Count yourself lucky. The booklet on CAD -- coronary artery disease -- discusses how
vessels become plugged and how they are treated. To order a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 101W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: You are familiar with energy drinks, aren't you? Well, my teenage son has gotten in the habit of drinking them far too often. He says they really do increase his energy. I'm worried that they might be dangerous. Will you please provide some information? -B.B. ANSWER: One kind of energy drink is a mixture of caffeine and alcohol. In November 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration declared such combinations to be unsafe. I'm sure your son isn't using this sort of energy drink. Others are. Your boy is likely drinking caffeinated beverages. The amount of caffeine in these drinks ranges from 50 to 505 mg of caffeine per can. A 6-ounce cup of coffee contains 77 to 150 mg of caffeine.
Adolescents drinking such large amounts of caffeine can suffer sleep disturbance, shaking hands and possibly a rise in blood pressure. One school district has banned these drinks at all practices and games. I think that's a good policy. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I had my gallbladder removed a year ago. I now have diarrhea, and the doctor says it's from not having a gallbladder. My doctor prescribed cholestyramine. It causes severe constipation. I now take half the dose, but still I have to be careful about what I eat or drink. Do you have a suggestion? -- E.J. ANSWER: Without a gallbladder to store it, bile drips into the digestive tract constantly. That constant drip irritates the tract in some people, and it causes food to rush through faster than normal. You have found the cure for this -- cholestyramine. The only matter that remains is to determine the correct dose for you. That will come with a little experimenting. *** (c) 2011 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

If you have problems with any of these advertisers, please let us know and we will attempt to get you a refund. Most of the companies we have checked will refund their fees to unsatisfied customers. What are you thankful for today? It seems to me that a lot of the conversations I listen to are more about what people dont like, what they dont have, what they dont agree with, etc., than about what they do like, what they do have, what they agree with and just generally what theyre thankful for. Focusing on these negatives causes your mind and spirit to attract more of them. When you focus on the positives, you discover more of them in your life. So today, focus for a minute on what youre thankful for. Im thankful today for: My wife and daughters who love me as I am, good mood or when Im Senior Cranky Pants, as my older daughter refers to me at times. My parents with whom Im spending most of this week and their loving sacrifices and investments in me when I was young. My work team who give of themselves every single day to achieve outstanding results for our clients and customers who want to Work and Live Positive. And Im thankful to share this story with you today. Thanks for listening to life with me! A public service message brought to you by

PAWS CORNER By Sam Mazzotta A Dogs Reading Room Just in time for fall, heres a selection of pet-related books to enjoy on a blustery evening. This months selection features odes to irrepressible dogs, humorous anecdotes, a bit of mystery and some training advice, of course. A Pugs Tale by Alison Pace (Penguin Group) is the authors second foray into the wonderful world of pugs -- this time in a fictional setting. Heroine Hope McNeill and her beloved pug Max hunt down a priceless painting thats gone missing from New Yorks Metropolitan Museum of Art. Psychologist and dog expert Stanley Coren pens a loving ode to Flint, his Cairn terrier, in Born to Bark: My Adventures with an Irrepressible and Unforgettable Dog (Free Press). But its also an autobiography of his own journey, with and without pets. Well-written and touching, this is an enjoyable and inspiring read. All My Patients Kick and Bite is veterinarian Jeff Wells second memoir about the joys and pains of caring for farm, domestic and notso-domestic animals. From an escaped dog to an ornery llama, Wells anecdotes are humorous looks at caring for animals in a rural area. Finally, if youre looking for a book that covers the basics of obtaining, training and raising a puppy, look for The Dog Trainers Complete Guide to a Happy WellBehaved Pet (St. Martins Press). Author Jolanta Bental details everything from choosing a new dog to training and socializing, dealing with common behavior problems and keeping your dog healthy. Anyone considering getting a dog, especially first-time owners, should have a training and care manual close at hand, and Bentals guide fits the bill.

microchipping a pet. Some of the pros are: Microchips cant be lost or damaged. They will last a pets lifetime. Microchips are convenient, reliable and safe. Microchip implantation is routine and simple. Some of the cons are: Unless a pet is properly scanned, the chip wont work. There are some shelters and vets that dont have scanners yet. Microchip scanning in not always reliable. Scan the chip before implanting it in your pet to see if it is readable. There are only two brands of microchips on the market. Until recently, each brand of microchip could only be read by the same brand of scanner. Not all shelters have the newer universal reader. There are a number of registry and recovery networks to choose from. Some register pets with any brand of chip, while others concentrate on registration and recovery, registering pets with all brands of chips. With all of these networks to choose from, it can be difficult to determine which one to register with. Multiple registrations can be costly and confusing. Hopefully, the services work together, but to be sure, choose the brand of chip that is most widely used. Microchipping your pet is a personal decision. Most vets can perform the procedure. If you are considering the possibility of using a microchip, contact your vet for specific information.

Paw's Corner
By Sam Mazzotta DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My Pom/Pekingese mix, "Debbie," really scratches and bites at her fur a lot, but when I inspect her, there are no fleas that I can see -- nor even the flea "dust" you described in a previous column. I bathe her regularly, but it doesn't seem to help. My husband thinks she scratches just to spite us. Do you have a solution? -- Dottie K., Irving, N.Y. DEAR DOTTIE: Debbie's not scratching to "spite" you; she's scratching because she itches. The cause of her itch doesn't have to be fleas. She may have allergies or dry skin. Scratching and biting at areas that are bothering her can make the problem worse, not better, especially in the case of dry skin (or even a skin disease that's developing, unseen). The first thing I would recommend is to stop bathing her so frequently, at least for a while. When you do bathe her, use a bath soap specifically made for dogs, and ideally for dogs with sensitive skin. The soap should be unscented -- perfumes can cause all sorts of misery for a dog with dry skin. You also should take Debbie to the veterinarian and have her checked out not just for fleas, but any possible allergic reaction, dry skin or skin disease. Foods can be a culprit in skin problems caused by allergies. It's sometimes hard to pinpoint exactly which food is causing Debbie's problem, but your vet can provide information on how to narrow down the possibilities so you can adjust her diet accordingly. Hours: Mon.-Sat. 8am-5pm; Sun. 10am-2pm A Unique Chip Off The Old Block
By Ronda Addy It doesnt matter if you have an outdoor or indoor pet, it needs to have some sort of identification. The traditional type of identification is a tag and collar with your pets name, your name and your phone number. While this is the tried and true method, it does have its limitations. Tags can fade or get scratched, while collars can come off or get caught on something, which can cause physical harm to your pet. Tattoos are another form of identification, but over time, they can fade or blur. There is a new type of technology that wont fade, get scratched or get caught on anything. Its called the microchip identification system or microchipping. Using a hypodermic needle, a vet injects a tiny microchip containing a unique identification number just under a pets skin between its shoulder blades. Microchips will not move in the body. They cant be lost, altered or removed, and they last for decades. The microchip is not visible to the naked eye, so a scanner or reader is needed to retrieve the ID number on the chip. While the chip can be seen using an X-ray, it cant be read. After the chip has been implanted, the information (name and phone number) is entered in a central database. When a pet with an implanted chip is found, the registry is notified, and it in turn, notifies the owner. The price for a microchip implantation can vary anywhere from $20 to $40. If the procedure is done in connection with spaying or neutering, there may be a discount. There is also a small fee to enter the information into the database and change contact information. There are many pros and cons to
