Legend

This place holds more magic for me than any palace in the world.~Princess Lily (fig.3)

(fig.1 Film Poster) Legend is a very odd film. It's charm is one that makes you want to find out what happens from beginning to end but is told in such a way that you would never admit watching it to your friends or family. Moving swiftly on the plot of this film is wonderfully simple. That said, it doesn't really have any plot twists and so won't really take you by surprise as far as the writing is concerned. This film follows the classic hero's story plot progression and so it's basically the hero meets the girl of his dreams when suddenly a dire situation causes them to have to part from each other until finally the hero is strong enough to conquer himself, then vanquish the dark powers and finally rescuing his true love by breaking some seemingly elusive curse. Now as clichd as that sounds, Legend would have not been able to remain what it is in itself. The costumes and sets are the films most defining features even though they can be quite confusing. This is because ...The look Scott envisioned for Legend was influenced by the style of Disney animation... ~Wikipedia (fig.4) Problem with that is that it has a very adult visual style and colour pallet.

(fig.2 Film Sill) The film seem quite indecisive and it makes following it difficult because your not sure if your meant to think about the unicorns from an aesthetic point of view or if it was meant to represent purity. If that was the case Scott would have seen the transition from the 1960's to the 1980's saw. This would make sense with the rise of modernism and a much darker age. This is a possibility and as such would make sense of the simplistic plot. Having a Character that is a 'Hero' or a 'Demon'

you can easily link to events and times. It's almost like the book Pilgrims Progress that signified personality traits though characters. But instead we use fantasy imagery. A demon who seeks to create eternal night by destroying the last of the unicorns and marrying a fairy princess is opposed by the forest boy Jack and his elven allies in this magical fantasy. ~IMDb (fig.5) From this angle we can see that this film is not accidental, in fact, it's very deep and can be as powerful as you let it. It's almost like the childish aspect of the film is a guise and for those who are willing to seek, there is an answer awaiting them.
