Welcome to the Student CD-ROM to accompany Biology: Concepts & Connections, Four th Edition, by Neil Campbell, Jane Reece,

Lawrence Mitchell, and Martha Taylor. This program runs in an internet browser -- Netscape Communicator or Microsoft I nternet Explorer. Macintosh users should only run this CD-ROM in the Netscape 4. 7 browser. You do not need an active internet connection to run the CD-ROM. You can access the Activities, Thinking as a Scientist, Quizzes, Flashcards, Key Ter ms, and Glossary without an internet connection. An active internet connection i s required for Objectives, Web Links, News and References, Art and Videos, Instr uctor's Resources (accessible with an instructor's password only), Syllabus Mana ger, and About the Book. WINDOWS INSTRUCTIONS Minimum system requirements: 166 MHz Intel Pentium processor Windows 95, 98, NT4, 2000, or XP 32 MB RAM installed 800 x 600 screen resolution Browser: Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher or Netscape Communicator 4.7 Plug-ins: Shockwave Player 8, Flash Player 5, QuickTime 4 4x CD-ROM drive (for CD-ROM) Internet connection with 56K modem (for web site) How to start the Student CD-ROM: 1. Insert the Student CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. If you have autorun turned o n, the installer should launch automatically. If it does not, follow these steps : a) Navigate through My Computer to your default CD-ROM drive. b) Double-click on the CD-ROM icon. c) Double-click on the Windows_Installer.exe icon and follow the instructions in the dialog boxes. 2. Click the "Check Browser" button to launch your default browser and see if it meets the minimum system requirements. 3. If you need to install a new browser, click the "Install Browser" button and select a browser to install. 4. After you have a browser that meets the minimum requirements, click on the "I nstall Plug-ins" button and launch each of the installers for the required plugins. 5. Once all plug-ins have been installed, return to the Main Screen and click th e "Launch" button to begin using the CD-ROM. Once you have a valid browser and have installed all the required plug-ins you c an skip the above steps and click on the "Launch" button directly to begin using the CD-ROM. Or, if you have the valid browser and plug-ins installed and you do n't have autorun installed, you can click on Bio_Concepts_&_Connections.html to skip the installation process. A: Most areas within the CD-ROM and Web site work within frames. To print from a framed page, you must move your cursor to the part of the page you wish to prin t and select it. Then send the page to the printer. If you want to print differe nt frames on a given page, you will need to select each section and print them i ndividually. Q: Does it matter if I am using a PC or a Macintosh? A: No. The Web site and CD-ROM can be used from a PC or a Macintosh as long as t he computer meets the minimum site requirements. Go to the Site Requirements pag e by clicking "Site Reqs" at the top of the CD-ROM or Web site window. Q: I can't get past the Web site login page when I enter my Login name and Passw ord. What is wrong? A: The server is unable to set the necessary cookies to allow you to navigate th e Web site. You will need to check a few things: a. that the version of browser you're using is at least compatible with Net scape Communicator 4.7 or Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0; b. that the "cookie" setting on your browser (usually found under the "Opti

ons" or "Preferences" menu) is set to accept cookies; and c. that you don't have any programs installed which automatically refuse al l cookies, such as "Cookie Cutter" or "WebFree." If all these things check out and you are still unable to log in to the Web site , please contact Technical Support. Q: How can I upgrade my browser? A: The Web site requires Netscape Communicator 4.7 or Microsoft Internet Explore r 5.0 or higher. Macintosh CD-ROM users must run the CD-ROM in Netscape Communic ator 4.7. To upgrade your browser, run the installer on the CD-ROM (double-click Windows_Installer.exe or Macintosh_Installer) or click "Site Reqs" at the top o f the CD-ROM or Web site window for links to Microsoft and Netscape download sit es. Q: Why can't I eject the CD-ROM from my Macintosh hard drive? A: If you get a message that your CD-ROM will not eject from your Macintosh hard drive then you should restart your computer and load the CD-ROM in Netscape 4.7 rather than Internet Explorer. Q: I don't see the graphics on some screens. In the place where I expect somethi ng to appear I only see a plug-in icon. What should I do? A: One or more plug-ins are not up to date or are not installed correctly for yo ur browser. Run the installer from the CD-ROM (double-click Windows_Installer.ex e or Macintosh_Installer) or go to the Site Requirements page by clicking "Site Reqs" at the top of the CD-ROM or Web site window. The Site Requirements page wi ll show you which plug-ins are not working. If your plug-ins are installed corre ctly, you will see three animated graphics on the Site Requirements page. If you do not see all three animations, run the installer from the CD-ROM or download updated plug-ins from the links on the Site Requirements page. Q: How do I turn off the narration or adjust the volume? A: Adjust the volume using your computer's sound control or speaker knobs. To tu rn off the sound completely, turn the volume down as far as possible or, if you have the option, select "Mute." Q: I can't see the bottom of the graphics in the activities. What can I do? A: Your screen is either too small or at too low a resolution. Try the following : move the browser window to the top of your screen and make it bigger; increase your screen resolution (it must be at least 800 x 600); hide your browser's too l bars; or, try refreshing/reloading the screen. Q: I'm using a Macintosh and my browser gives me a message that it is running lo w on memory. What should I do? A: Try quitting any other applications you have open. If this does not work, try allocating more memory to your browser. To do this, quit your browser and locat e the application on your hard disk. Click on it once and select "Get Info" from the "File" menu. In the information dialog box under Memory Requirements, incre ase the Preferred Size. A good starting point for Netscape Communicator 4.7 is 1 6384. Q: I have installed QuickTime and now I get a message asking if I want to order QuickTime Pro. Do I have to buy QuickTime Pro to run the CD-ROM or Web site? A: No. The version of QuickTime 5.0 distributed with the installer on the CD-ROM and available through the Site Requirements page does everything that you need to run the CD-ROM and Web site. Go to the Site Requirements by clicking "Site Re qs" at the top of the CD-ROM or Web site window. Q: When I try to register at the Web site I get a message that I need an access code. Where do I get an access code?

A: Your access code is in your textbook. To access the Web site, follow the inst ructions on the insert just inside the front cover. Q: My access code doesn't work. Now what? A: If you bought a used book, your access code may have been used by a previous owner. To obtain a new access code, purchase a Web site subscription at your boo kstore or online. To purchase online, go to www.campbellbiology.com and click on your book cover. Click "Buy Now" to purchase a Web site subscription or click " 3-Day Trial" to try the Web site free for three days. If you purchased a new boo k and your access code doesn't work, contact Technical Support. Q: I installed QuickTime 5.0 on my PC and I can't view any animations. What shou ld I do? A: The QuickTime 5.0 installer for PCs has been known to make QuickTime 5.0 the preferred player for Flash content (animations) even though it cannot always pla y this content. To change your QuickTime preferences, exit your browser, click o n the start menu, click on settings, then click on Control Panel. Then select Qu ickTime and choose Browser plug-in from the QuickTime drop down box. Click on th e MIME settings button, choose miscellaneous check box to remove the check mark. Close the QuickTime control panel window and restart your browser.
