Featured Committees House of Commons



The Ontario Black History Society and Anthony Sherwood Productions Inc. will appear at the Canadian Heritage committee on the topic of Canada's 150th Anniversary in 2017. Hubert T. Lacroix, President and Chief Executive Officer of the CBC is scheduled to appear at the Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics committee as it resumes hearings relating to the Access to Information Dispute and the Resulting Court Actions Concerning CBC. The Official Languages Committee continues its study called Evaluation of the Roadmap: Improving Programs and Service Delivery with testimony expected from Francophone and Acadian organizations. A Norwegian delegation will appear before the Defence committee for its study on Maintaining the Readiness of the Canadian Forces. Two topics will be considered at the Aboriginal Affairs committee, Land-Use and Sustainable Economic Development (Briefing : Land Management Boards and Land-Use planning (modern treaties)) and Land-Use and Sustainable Economic Development (Briefing on Land Management Programs on Reserves) with department officials appearing. Among the witnesses slated to appear at the International Trade committee on the topic of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) with the European Union, are Sustainable Development Technology Canada, Canadian Environmental Law Association, Atlantic Institute for Market Studies, and the C.D. Howe Institute. The Environment committee will hold another meeting on the Statutory Review of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act and host representatives from Cameco Corporation, the Canadian Nuclear Association and MiningWatch Canada. Party officials from the Green Party, NDP, and Bloc Qubcois will appear at the Procedures & House Affairs committee along with Victor Cayer, Lawyer, Member of the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for Quebec (2004) on Bill C-20, An Act to amend the Constitution Act, 1867, the Electoral Boundaries Readjustment Act and the Canada Elections Act (Fair Representation Act). Public Safety continues consideration of Bill C-19, An Act to amend the Criminal Code and the Firearms Act with numerous organizations and individuals expected to appear including: Fdration des femmes du Qubec, Association qubcoise de prvention du suicide and Students and Graduates of Polytechnique for Gun Control. The Agriculture committee considers the study Growing Forward 2 (Competitive Enterprises) and will hear testimony on the subject from the several agricultural stake-holders and the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. DisAbled Women's Network of Canada and Rseau FADOQ are slated to testify at the Status of Women committee for its study into Abuse of Older Women. Appearing at the Fisheries & Oceans committee on the topic of Closed Containment Salmon Aquaculture will be Tides Canada Foundation, Sustainable Development Technology Canada, and JLH Consulting. Human Resources Minister Diane Finley and Labour Minister Lisa Raitt both will appear at the Human Resources committee along with HRSDC officials on Supplementary Estimates.

Legal and Constitutional Affairs is scheduled to undertake clause by clause consideration of Bill C-16, An Act to amend the National Defence Act (military judges) and will continue its examination on the provisions and operation of the Act to amend the Criminal Code (production of records in sexual offence proceedings), S.C. 1997, c. 30. Banking, Trade and Commerce will hear testimony from professor James Brander of the Strategy and Business Economics Division at UBC, Communitech and OMERS Ventures for its study on the present state of the domestic and international financial system with a focus on Financing Growth Capital for SMEs. Minister of Health Leona Aglukkaq will appear before the Senate Social Affairs, Science and Technology committee along with officials from Health Canada, the Public Health Agency of Canada and Finance as part of the comprehensive examination of the progress in implementing the 2004, 10-Year Plan to Strengthen Health Care.

Private Members' Business Debate on M-274 (Multiple sclerosis)


Sponsor: Mr. Benoit (MP for VegrevilleWainwright) Text of Motion: That, in the opinion of the House, the government should help ensure that patients suffering from Multiple sclerosis (MS), and their families and caregivers, have access to the information they need to make informed decisions in the management of their condition by ensuring that: (a) the MS monitoring system currently being developed by the Canadian Institute for Health Information contain specific and useful information, accessible directly to patients, on the risks, benefits, and other relevant aspects relative to undergoing surgical treatment for chronic cerebro-spinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI); (b) departments, agencies and programs work closely with provincial and territorial counterparts, with health professionals associations, such as the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, and with patient groups, such as the MS Society of Canada, on the sharing of up-to-date research-based information on the nature of CCSVI and its link to MS; and (c) the governments two advisory boards dealing with MS ensure the patients concerns and views are well represented and heard at future meetings.
